Who plays the guitar here, and how good are you ?

maybe some of his tunesmiths stuff was plagarised but as far as lyric writing is concerned it doesnt get much better than Dylan, along with bowie & lennon & mcartney. Why did Joni Mitchell feel the need to bitch about him. Its never nice to see people do that, its puts them in a bad light.

The fact you've listed Bowie is telling. Mr. Rip-off extraordinaire!

Look - Dylan was and is a shameless plagiarist, musically. Lyrically, he's unbelievable and changed the rock lyric for good. But just listen to 'Nowegian Wood' and '4th Time Around', for fuck's sake! Then listen to early Dylan and compare it to Woody Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack Elliot. Read Chronicles, even - he admits it!

Plagiarism isn't 'bad' - there are only 12 notes in the chromatic scale, for fuck's sake!

But Joni plays chords that don't even have names, so if anybody can have a dig, it's her. It doesn't detract from Dylan's brilliance.

telling of what ? I dont know who he ripped off. Ive read Dylans biography and know about his woodie guthrie influence. Maybe bowie isnt quite as up there on a pedastal as Dylan and Lennon, but not too far behind imho.

"Quicksand"

I'm closer to the Golden Dawn
Immersed in Crowley's uniform
Of imagery
I'm living in a silent film
Portraying
Himmler's sacred realm
Of dream reality
I'm frightened by the total goal
Drawing to the ragged hole
And I ain't got the power anymore
No I ain't got the power anymore

I'm the twisted name
on Garbo's eyes
Living proof of
Churchill's lies
I'm destiny
I'm torn between the light and dark
Where others see their targets
Divine symmetry
Should I kiss the viper's fang
Or herald loud
the death of Man
I'm sinking in the quicksand
of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore

[CHORUS]
Don't believe in yourself
Don't deceive with belief
Knowledge comes
with death's release

I'm not a prophet
or a stone age man
Just a mortal
with the potential of a superman
I'm living on
I'm tethered to the logic
of Homo Sapien
Can't take my eyes
from the great salvation
Of bullshit faith
If I don't explain what you ought to know
You can tell me all about it
On, the next Bardo
I'm sinking in the quicksand
of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore

[CHORUS]

He wrote a few good tunes, but Bowie is the biggest dilettante in the history of rock. That lyric ironically being the perfect demonstration of such (he mispronounces 'Crowly', btw). Which again doesn't mean he's 'bad'.

Anyway, what the hell have Bowie lyrics got to do with the topic at hand?

Yeah, I think so! Probably the only woman that they were too in awe of to try and fuck. :D

Haha! Yeah that sounds about right :D

Always wondered how long he was on it - at first I thought he'd pulled round just after the Death Wish soundtrack and The Firm but there's a recent Robert Plant interview where he mentions Jimmy finally getting over his "er...health problem.." in about 2001.

Right, from what I've managed to understand they all got on it during their US 75 tour and Jimmy was on it consistently until a couple years after Bonzo's death - he got off it around 82/83, which is apparently one of the reasons why no one ever saw him during those few years. That sounds plausible enough to me because he looks a hell of a lot better in the mid-80s than he does in the late 70s.
The 'health problem' I think Plant would have been referring to was Jimmy's drinking, which was his main issue in the 90s, from what I've read.
But who knows really...though I do have trouble imagining Jimmy was on smack all that time simply because of how much healthier he looks post-70s...:
1977
1988

Spot the smackhead :D
He was clearly still on something though because he continued to look pretty damn bad all through the 80s/90s.

Think my fave Jimmy quote of all time is when he says "I'm trying to find an angel with a broken wing but it's hard to find one especially if you're staying at the plaza hotel".

Haha yeah it's great :)

listening to blind willie johnson right now, totally otherworldly and spiritual - to teach yourself guitar without being able to see, then play to such a virtuoso level, as a poor, mostly uneducated, southern black man at the turn of the century - to me, lends credence to the religious stuff he proselytizes

i mean, his finger picking is pretty faultless, but plenty can emulate that. as for slide (on a non amplified guitar) ive never heard better. whether some are his equal, well thats up for debate. but his whole-package'ness of poverty, affliction, positivity, faith, catchy song writing ablility and unbridled talent kinda elevates him for me, personally

anyone interested should youtube his recording of nobodies fault but mine. unbelievable playing, if you know anything whatsoever about guitar playing - itll blow you away

Nice mate yeah tis a shame about the sound n vid quality

old vid of me

Sounds nice mate. When I bought a Wah Wah I tried all the main ones and ended up buying the cheapest! It sounds excellent! Best pedal I ever bought was a Boss MT-2 unfortunately I left it at my exes -_- hope she trips over it and lands on a cactus! Look em up on YouTube they're amazing!

Coltdan, i just saw you post a vid of your guitar playing, but it seems to have gone ? Do you have an acoustic guitar ?

Do you reckon this would be reasonably easy to pick up, im sure i could do the riffy/groovy bit, and get into that, but i might struggle with the timing of some of the strumming patterns, as they are fuckin class. Would i need to use a capo like he does in the clip ? It sounds like hes using a lot of octave based stuff on his guitar.

nice bit of soloing there, how can you say guitar music is dead when you can play like that. 8o

Im getting on the superglue now, maybe i should re-phrase that, ive not turned glue sniffer, but have started the superglue layers on my scarred finger tip. I think It'll work. I wonder how many layers it'll need, first layer alone is taking ages to dry and bond, i thought it was spsed to bond to skin in seconds. My own fault for buying cheap rubbish. I wanna get cracking on this Johny Cash cover.

Major achievment of the day, have managed to get my guitar more or less in tune, that was a feat in itself, and the superglue thing works ! It must be at least 10 -15 years since i last played regularly though, just trying a few simple things to get back into it, so rusty, but my strumming wasnt as bad as id thought, maybe thats improved during the hiatus somehow.

Just trying to do the opening to eurythmics thorn in my side atm, start with something very simple that sounds quite good, and pink floyds is there any body out there, i cant currently do all the twiddly bits with my little finger on the top string as yet though. Got a fuckin long way to go before i can tackle personal Jesus. It seems its gonna take a while to get all the nimbleness of my left hand fingers back.

Id love to be able to play david bowies Andy Warhol, i dont think its that difficult, but i keep getting ahead of myself.

is there 2 guitar tracks layered on top of each other, or is he doing that run up and down the scales at the same time as playing the chords, does anyone reckon ? Its got to be 2 guitar layers surely ? Cant see how he'd do the chords and the scale runs all in one (at my current very low skill level).

cheers, i really do need to broaden my range of hobbies, interests, and pursuits. I didnt think the superglue thing would work, but it totally does, and in not too much time at all your finger tips start to harden up too. Might have to grow my nails on my right hand a bit as i dont use a plectrum, and it'll give me a lighter touch than using mu finger tips themselves.

Everyone should play an instrument. It's good for your mental health. If music is soul-food, then instruments are soul-cutlery.

Had a feeling the superglue thing would work due to the amount of times I've unintentionally glued my fingers together (DOH!). Stuff really is a second skin, then you gotta build up your own natural callouses, nails, etc... Good luck. I'll keep practicing my SingStar. Maybe one day I'll be the toast of the Malta impersonator/karaoke scene, ha.

That would be awesome ? Do you have any clips on youtube ? (pm me if your shy !)

I agree with albion, its therapeutic

Now ive got free time i wanna make some hip hop beats and stuff, havent gathered the motivation to spend hours and hours messing about and learning the music making software yet though
