Your favourite films ?

going to take a bit of stick for this but my wife kept on at me to watch it and in the end i am glad i did as i really enjoyed it.
Billy Elliot

cant see why. It was a fantastic film. It appeared to be a very real portayal of how life might be for a young boy with his talent and his family growing up in a rough town. Im surprised ive not had more pisstaking for admitting to enjoying Titanic and Forrest Gump.

I went to Serbia a few years ago. Every Serbian I met had a joke/story that involved laughing their head off at the fact their city had been bombed to fuck over the past few decades. "THE BOMBS HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAA" "THAT WAS AMERICA WITH THE BOMBS HAHAHAHAHAHAHA" "The old bridge was nicer. That's not there any more... BECAUSE OF THE BOMBS HAHAHAHAHA"

Mad bastards. Top quality folk though. I'm fairly sure they would all find A Serbian Film hilarious.

Did you and the serbians understand each other OK ? No offence intended, but i imagine you as having quite a strong scottish accent, anf you probably talk quite fast too, foreigners can struggle, the chineese students in Sunderland couldnt understand a word the locals said lol, but they could understand the lecturers and people that didnt have strong accents.

A room full of encyclopedias couldnt compete with it.

well theres rooms and rooms mdb...you certain about that? Thats fightin talk.

Is it that you are suggesting that every encyclopaedia, book or parchment knowledge past present and future in lets say an infinite abyss size room couldn't compete with wiki?

Wouldn't knock wiki for a minute.. i use it a lot its concise.. just a bit of an overstatement wouldnt you concede?

Ed: sorry lol im feeling picky.. its been a difficult morning and im fighting tramafuckingdoll. Thats why ive got all the Rocky on.. it motivates me :D ( she says procrastinating wretchedly in filthy room)

lol, i guess i was going a bit OTT. It would have been more accurate to say a standard volume of encylopedias could not compete with Wiki. The ease of moving around the site through the embedded links is also a huge advantage.

Need to watch that properly actually NE, seen about 3/4 of it and then got distracted or called away or summat. Mrs Snolls needs to watch it as part of one of her classes so might have a romantic night in with it ;) I liked what I did see, always love Jack Nicholson though.

My favourite films, that I can recall offhand, are 'The Cat Returns', because it's escapist and ridiculous and brilliant and I have a thing for labyrinths and related imagery, 'The Boondock Saints 1 and 2', 'The Shining;', 'Shutter Island' (Might give that un a watch today actually), 'Street Fighter' (the original, I know it's shit but oh god its so 90s and Raul Julia gets some hilariously OTT lines. The most recent one is just downright irredeemable shite), 'Brazil', and 'Dr Strangelove'.

To be honest I tend to find myself watching shitty films more often than good ones. I studied film at college so maybe it's some sort of reaction against having to study 'classic' films (and Pirates of the Caribbean...) seriously and at length. Shit horror films are a particular love of mine, with 'Curse of the Maya/Day of the Dead/I'm pretty sure it had a third title' being the one I regard as 'best'. Jesus Christ, that film. It was honestly on a par with some of the student films I saw in my time at college and in fact would probably be good viewing on a course of that nature as a big ol' 'what not to do, ever' check-list. The ending just throws any rhyme or reason out the window and is balls out ridiculous. Love it. Notable mentions also to 'The Happening' and 'Dead and Dying'. I think this hobby/obsession is probably why I have a Netflix account.

Has anyone done 'one flew over the cuckoos nest yet?'

first film listed in the first post. ;)

The book is nothing like the film. Its years since i read it but IIRC its all written from the Indian "Chief"'s perspective. Jack Nicholson's character is just a bit-part. The characaters in that film were so good though. Ive not watched it for many years, I'll record it next time it's broadcasted, ive allready seen it atleast 3 times, i wanna see how it stands the test of time.

A weird thing with Taxi Driver, another film ive watched several times, it used to be about an older guy who went a bit psycho, then suddenly De Niro was a young guy next time i watched it, and i was much older than him. I hate it when that happens.

Valhalla Rising is definitely high on my list.
There's just so much hidden in that film - especially when you've such a sparse dialogue in the whole flick - and I think it hasn't had as much praise as it should be given.

I'm with you on that to be shamefully frank chuck hehe ;)
One that springs to mind is Contact. But I like the idea behind it that we're sent blueprints on how to visit an alien race.

One that was shown on Film4 the otter (small mammal) day is CopyCat.
Great performances from pretty much all of the cast really.

And one that I watch atleast once a month is On The Road. I'll never tire of that film :)

There're loads more rattling around my head no doubt, but I'll leave it at that for now!

Haha, aye man they probably spoke better English than me. They could understand no bad for the most part tho.

I should add these few

Kids
Kidulthood & the follow up Adulthood
Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky <3 (bits from the film, I promise you it's one of the most fucked up movies ever)

I used to share a house with one of my mates who was at uni doing film studies & I got to watch all kinds of great movies with him, one that I have never forgot was Un chant d'amour.

It was through him I got my huge love of Japanese cinema & also got into the Kaiju Japanes stuff, I always loved old Kung Fu movies & some how I got into Japanese cinema from it. You like the early 80's Evil dead series Snolly?

Yeah I'll also have to add The Great Escape as Ive watched it and ejnoyed it so many times. Groundhog Day is another film i really enjoyed, OK its not a classic, but it had its funny parts and was kind of romantic in a very cynical way too.

Also Greencard with Gerard Depardieu, that is a fuckin wonderfull film.

Ah think I'll give that a watch today, cos it popped up on Netflix recently, is sat right at the top of my list. I liked the book a lot, but don't think I ever finished it. And also check out those other ones ya posted, cos I'm having a lazy day

Aye, we covered some interesting ones too, is how I got watch Brazil, but one of my other tutors was in love with Johnny Depp so we also watched some fairly terrible stuff. But maybe I'm just biased cos he does my nut in a bit, him and Tim Burton. Liked him a lot in Fear and Loathing though.

I'm gonna throw myself to the film wolves here and say I've not actually seen the Evil Dead films, though obviously I know of them, and the iconic scenes and whatnot, so that's one for the list. I always get mocked by people cos I ain't seen stuff that others have, like really popular things. Was talking to the ex yesterday, we frequently spend evenings with her brother getting drunk and watching shit films, and she nearly disowned me cos I told her I ain't seen Jurassic Park, ha :D

I keep meaning to get into Japanese films but dunno where to start, apart from Kurosawa obviously. I could well get into all the Kaiju stuff though, think it's really cool but never seen much of it
