I am new to this whole blogging thing...so forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong spot and whatever else I am doing wrong.

Question... Friend is allergic to Niacin (he has had reactions before but like any other allergy it has gotten worse each time). The meth in this town has been cut with large amounts of niacin lately. Well, he did an issue of meth and it was pretty much all shake...the end of his baggie and he puffed up like a blow fish.

He has taken approx 150mg of liquid Diphenydramine and 10 puffs of an inhaler for asthma. His breathing has gotten a little easier for him but his eyes, lips, ears...lets just say his entire head all still swollen.

He refuses to go to the hospital and I am watching over him the best I can. Is there a way to inject over the counter Benadry in either pill or liquid form??? I would appreciate any help with this issue. Thank you.

It doesn't necessarily have to be an allergic reaction. He could be suffering niacin toxicity due to an overdose. He needs to pay a visit to the hospital.

What do you hope to achieve by administering IV antihistamines when he can take them orally?

I would definitely recommend going to hospital, this is a serious life threatening condition. Anyway if the oral Diphenhydramine doesnt do its job, inject it will have no utility.

He can have severe complications if you do not take him to the emergency room.

They can't do anything to him if he refuses treatment though...

This is sounding pretty serious...and I am telling you that not just as a fellow BLer but as a nurse for 20 years.

If he is still refusing to go to ER then call an ambulance for him. When they get there and see the condition he is in and if his breathing is labored they will take him (and I promise they will convince him he needs to go..they can be pretty persuasive!). Anytime someone is having an allergic reaction and it involves causing their breathing to be hindered in that way it is considered a life or death emergency. When you have all of that swelling around the face, head and neck then giving diphenhydramine is like putting a house fire out with a squirt gun. Even though he seems to be a little better it can very suddenly get worse again. With the swelling and the symptoms you have described I would bet a thousand bucks his airway is impeded from the swelling. (Anytime you have swelling to those 3 areas from anything, whether it be allergic reaction, burns etc it is considered life or death). And even if he is improving there are some things that he will need to have checked out to avoid further complications after an incident this serious.

Jays comment normally holds true that someone can refuse but if he goes in to the ER in that shape he can refuse but they can still put him on a respirator due to the severity of his condition.

I would seriously consider calling an ambulance.

Please just take him to the hospital. What is he worried about? That he'll have to tell them he smoked meth?? They won't care in the slightest.
