Syrian civil war thread

Obama said:
Most decisions that come to my desk are either a bad decision, or a worse one, because if it were an easy decision someone else down the chain would have already made it.

I'm paraphrasing what he said, but it's true.

hmm..? I think most "decisions" that come a crossed Obamas desk made it there because they are from paid political contributors with multi billion dollar agendas behind them.

Invading other countries is about resources. Resources are worth billions.

By the way, what was up with FOX News and other 24 Hour networks having their "Political Analysts" on stating this was an "embarrassment" and "defeat" for the White House when Russia did a reasonable thing and chose to lead the disarmament? What is the frame of reference one needs to be defeated when a war is evaded? To be "exceptional" you would have to succeed in some things, at least. I remember when Kennedy succeeded in removing missile arms from Cuba and going on national TV like "A Wonderful Life" angel when he also conceded the missile base housed in Turkey which were just as important to any deal that would be made.

Israel has launched air strikes against a Syrian airbase in the northern province of Latakia, according to media reports and officials.

A US official confirmed that "there was an Israeli strike" on Thursday but gave no detail on the location or the target, according to the AFP news agency.

Citing unnamed "exclusive sources", Saudi Arabian news network Al-Arabiya said on its website that "Israel was behind a series of explosions that rocked a Syrian airbase in the northern Latakia province".

"The bombing targeted a shipment of surface-to-air missiles [SAM] that was headed for Hezbollah in Lebanon," the report said.

Israel has 'no comment'

Al Jazeera's Stefanie Dekker, reporting from Jerusalem, said that Israel has refused to comment on the attack, but that attacks such as this are "not unusual", citing previous Israeli strikes on Syrian convoys near Damascus in January and May, as well as the destruction of a missile storage facility near Latakia in July.

"People here are saying it is very possible that Israel could have carried out this airstrike, but the official line from the Israeli army is 'no comment'," she said.

CNN cited an unnamed US administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, as saying Israeli warplanes carried out the attack, and that the target was missiles and related equipment the Israelis felt might be transferred to Hezbollah.

Former Syrian intelligence agent Afaq Ahmad, a defector now in exile in France, told Reuters news agency that contacts inside Syria told him that Russian-made ballistic missiles had been kept at the site that was attacked.

Israel struck a strategic missile battery near the village of Ain Shikak, he said, where President Bashar al-Assad's forces kept long-range Russian missiles that are among their most powerful weapons.

The Lebanese military said six Israeli jets had flown over Lebanese territory on Wednesday. Israeli aerial incursions over Lebanon are frequent, but such high numbers have in the past sometimes been an indication of military strikes against Syria.

Noting Syria's failure to retaliate after previous Israeli action, Ahmad said "Israel knows Assad has lost the ability to respond ... So it has been engaging in unannounced attacks on the weapons that could pose the most threat in the hands of Assad or if they are transferred to Hezbollah".

What a twist

What strikes me funny is, Israel strikes Syria and no one bats an eye. What sort of global consequences would occur if Syria were to strike military targets inside Israel?

What is a "rogue" nation? I can find several examples where the only two countries voting in one direction against the rest of the UN are the US and Israel. Unless we're using a moral standard to determine something like this, and apartheid policies coupled with ethnic relocation aren't enough to discredit a state.

Not at all, when Israels forces went through Gaza looking for a tunnel and destroyed 92 homes of displaced palestinians leaving 2 standing, nothing rogue about that. All their previous homes in Israel were occupied by settlers.

For starters, a nation that eschews democracy and slaughters a significant portion of its own people. The US and Israel do neither of these things.

Perhaps in the event of a civil war though, this might change. Besides, how many strikes outside of Syria has the Syrian regime claimed responsibility for? Invading and occupying two nations while unilaterally striking 10 more over the next decade might be considered as "rogue" activity by some.
