Abnormally large spiders??

THE FALSE WIDOW spider – which is running amok in Britain – nearly cost a decorator his LEG.

I don't really like spiders but I'm happy to live and let live if they're minding their own business in my flat. If they start moving about in the open a lot I do the old glass-and-card trick to catch them and put them outside again. I'm sure I see the same one back in again the next day though.

Funnily enough in this basement flat I've only seen one so far this season. 2 years ago I was living in a little end of terrace covered in ivy and trained roses and under 2 massive sycamore trees, and was catching 2 or 3 of the big house spiders a day during "the month". My parent's timber framed barn conversion in the middle of nowhere is riddled with them this time of year too.
 
Even the Black Widows aren't 'deadly' as such - Brown recluse or even Wandering spiders , there not something you want to be meeting up with :D.
 
The old tedge. They don't actually come in from outside - they can't survive outdoors. Believe it or not, their lineage has always lived in your house, from the day it were built. The larger ones are the females and the smaller the males, legging about looking for a fuck. They'll have kids and those kids will mooch about the house out of the way until next year, when they want to fuck too. If you place them outside, make sure you place them away from your house because they'll only do everything they can to get back in again. I always put them in my neighbours garden over the road. An when you've caught them in your glass container, always have a chat with them for a while. Just pop 'em on table and have a chinwag. It desensitizes you and you can develop good relationships with spiders over time.
 
I think Ive seen the biggest one ever this year. I have respect for any creature that has reached a certain age and size.

If they are in my hallways or rooms im not in i let them be. I dont like them in the bathroom, bedroom, or living room with me, they give me the creeps. They are quite easy to trap by placing a pint glass over them, turning it over, beermat or something on top, then chuck em out the door or window. I have to presume that falling 10 feet or something doesnt kill them otherwise all my efforts are in vain.

They wont harm your cat FG. If Bear Grylls can eat them Im sure your cats digestive system can cope with them. Probably really good nutrients for it.

I'm suddenly counting my blessings.

Got ambushed on the toilet by one yesterday and today nearly died of relief/horror when I got out of the shower at my parents' to see a massive spider fall into the bathtub I'd just been showering in. I checked everywhere before I got in so god knows where it came from. I hope not my towel :|

edit: Yeah it's the fuckers Marmz posted that I hate the most. I'm not even scared of them like I'm scared of flying or Renault Espaces, it's just some sort of primal monkeybrain thing where I just freak before I consciously realise I've seen one. I don't mind the wee ones though, money spiders or whatever. And jumping spiders are hilarious. Just the big brown scuttling bastards can do one. Urgh feel all twitchy now

I need to dig out my Spider pictures - I have some that I took when I was in Thailand (Orb Spiders). Not scary looking as in OMG thats going to bite me and kill me, but just huge!
 
theres some primal basic instinct thing going on here as so many people are freaked out by spiders particualrly like the 1 in marmz first pic. House mice affect people the same way, isnt it weird tho how mice can look cute as pets or lab animals, but when they are an uninvited house guests they give you the creeps.
 
Mice are awesome though. I walked past my local sub pound shop shop today and saw a pack of mouse traps that had a big picture of a hamster on the front. Bad timez.

I just googled this and found a picture of one eating a whole fucking bird. Jesus christ! Guess where i'm going tomorrow as well, might as well stay at home!

Where about's you going? My last few visits were Bangkok (no spiders), Samui (Big spiders), Patong - Spiders are the least of your worries :D

(I do think that there are spiders in BKK I just didn't see any :D)

Not made any concrete plans as of yet, staying in BKK with friends for a couple of days. Probably going to check out Kanchanaburi, was going to check out Patong/Phuket & Samui but might swerve that now :D

I cannot stress this enough - Patong is horrible (its vile -it's like all the bad things you have heard about Thailand crammed into two roads). If your going to Phuket go to the old town - or Bang Thao <3 (bit far out-but clean beaches, no hassle etc) if your into the night life etc then staying in Patong is easier than staying in Katon / Karon and travelling back and forth.

Patong is really expensive (Europe prices) and the beach is awful - best place to eat is Jimmys bar (Irish bar but they serve the best Panang curry on the full strip and its so cheap) after that there's a great place tucked behind Ban La Mai hotel - best food I ate during my trip. If your going for massage then left from Ban la Mai and the first place you come too - it has a pink sign ? Clean and the girls are great fun :) (pharmacy opposite Ban La Mai - otc Valiums etc :D)

Samui is well worth a visit - Chewang bay especially . (Centara hotel is great)

We used Patong as a base and traveled most days (by taxi / tuk tuk )- negotiate a price before you get in the car and repeat it several times to the driver before you set off. You can get a driver for the day for about 1000 baht - they will take you about, wait for you etc so if your going to do a few trips (big Budha/old town ) etc its really worth it :).

Was thinking more of visiting Khao Lak (not really Phuket I know!) rather than the more resort kind of places, I'm not sure if we will make it that far down.

I can deal with spiders cutting about outside spinning their webs in trees and all that caper. If I wake up and there is a giant huntsman on the wall next to me I will shit a brick.

Will have to bring back a couple of pictures for this thread.

I travel with a can of raid :D - Don't travel to Patong to see what its like. Bang Thao was probably the nicest place in that area but there was nothing there - just beaches / beach huts etc (no night life etc). Its a strange place - you can either stay somewhere quiet and get a taxi to the busy place at night (Patong) or stay in Patong and leave during the day. Really depends on what your after. 10mg valium for 1$ helps make the day so much smoother :) - there's actually a better (legal) sleeping tablet available for half the price (if your into that sort of thing) called Meditapp !

for me the creepiest spiders are the harvestmen. unearthly looking fuckers they are. like something from war of the worlds


however, id be far more creeped out visiting thailand by the multitudinous array of sixty year old, fat, balding men chasing after girls young enough to be their granddaughters, believing it to be as a result of their magnetic personalities

Once I spotted a spider in the corner of my roof, it was looking pretty big so I was thinking "Dam I wanna get rid off that fucker".
So, I picked a pen and successfully squeezed da fucker into the corner! And when I looked to the tip pen that I crushed it with was FULL of tiny little spider eggs!! That was nasty.

I dont have a phobia or fear them but dam if I met one of those which have been in this thread, whoooh....
