My grandfather is coming to visit me in a couple months. We're very close, and I discussed my psilocybin mushroom use with him on multiple occasions. He's expressed an interest to try it, and I was wondering if you guys had any thoughts on whether or not this is a good idea. He's 73 and has various old person problems. He has a pacemaker, a bad heart, and bladder cancer.

Would a medium dose of psilocybin mushrooms push him over the edge? He's never had a psychedelic experience and I'd love to show him the world of psychedelia. I'm also interested to see how someone with so much life experience as him reacts to psilocybin. It could be an incredibly rewarding experience, but I don't want to take any stupid risks. I'd hate to have to explain to my friends and family how I gave my grandpa shrooms and he had a heart attack...;)

I would say the heart problems would be the issue defiantly issue.

I would also say that imo psilocybin mushrooms are one of if not the safest drug their is.

I would also say that it could be potentially panick attack inducing, changes in heart rate and blood pressure and maybe not recommended for someone with a bad heart, but I also know this could be a really amazing experience

I would also say you probably know this and make your decision after you know everything, we cant suggest you do drugs here and there is no true answer to your question. Simply just read up on its effects on the heart calculate risk and you will have your answer.

Don't read too much into him saying he's curious to try it - he might be gently humouring you.

Grandparents are always interested in grandkids life. Do they really care about matchbox cars, plastic dolls, fake tea parties, ...psilocybin mushrooms ? usually not just the time the get to spend sharing life with their grandkids.

Shrooms can give people pretty intense anxiety which might not be so safe on a bad heart.

does he smoke weed? people can have horrible panic attacks on weed and well, a bad trip could be way worse. if your grandpa doesnt use any drugs i say not a good idea.

you should smoke weed with him, not shrooms

What?? The logic makes no sense. "People can have horrible panic attacks on weed," ...so smoke weed with him?

Weed panic attacks are completely different from psychedelic panic attacks. There are many people who have panic attacks on weed but virtually none on psychedelics. How someone handles weed is NOT a good gauge for how someone handles psychedelics.

correct, it isn't and that isn't the point. the likelihood of a panic attack is smaller in general with weed, and the experience is much shorter as well. his point was that if you wanna do drugs with grandpa just smoke weed it's safer and is still mildly psychedelic especially for a first timer.

He's smoked weed like a couple times, with my uncle (his son) who was a big stoner back in the day. Not that much though. To be honest, I was really more interested in doing mushrooms with him but I do see the point that it could cause a panic attack which could raise heart rate etc etc. Maybe not the best idea.

Then again, if it was a small dose then there probably wouldnt be very much risk...right?

I love the title of this thread.

Grandma and the Magic Mushroom... kind of has a nice ring to it.

Psilocybin and the elderly is a beautiful thing, however the pace maker worries me if he starts to panic, otherwise there are no other issues here. I personally believe a low dose would be fine but we are talking about a patient with medical problems that could be problematic. I would have to vote it would be reckless. Unfortunately

I thought tryptamines were more benign on the heart than phenethylamines ?

Maybe some MDAI if he really wants to .. ?

Anyway I would listen to Black Rabbit. If he mentions it himself, go on with it, if he doesn't, leave it.

It's not the substance in questions physiological properties here that are making people question whether this is a good idea or not.
Although tryptamines aren't known to be stimulating on your cardiovascular system, mental distress very well can be.
Enter a bad trip and I guarantee your heart is going to have a lot of stress on it, regardless of which psychedelic was used

I'm voting no on this idea, this is essentially the probability of him going into cardiac arrest you're debating here.
Even if he does and his pacemaker works, it will still do considerable damage to his heart making it weaker than ever before.
It would be reckless to advise this is any way imo
