Opioids heroin addiction and alcoholism

I know that former addicts are more prone to addiction later in life, atleast psychologically. what I wanna kno is whether heroin addicts are more susceptible to becoming physically addicted to alcohol than a normal person.

i know how heroin makes the brain become addicted, but how does the brain become physically addicted to alcohol? and does alcohol addiction affect the same part of the brain as heroin/opiate addiction? in short, are former opiate addicts more easily addicted to alcohol due to the past damage on their brain from opiates? and finally, HOW easy can one become an alcoholic? (how can social drinkers stay social)

basically I've been clean from dope for a little over a month. I'll typically have a few drinks after work in the evening, but naturally I'm worried about becoming an alcoholic. are there any ways to avoid becoming one? for instance, primarily sticking to beer instead of whiskey???

I'd like to know this. I shot up heroin and oxy for almost 5 years. Durring that time I would drink one or two beers a day at most...I've been clean from opiates(minus my 2mg sub a day) for 4 years now. Within the last two years I'vebeen really addicted to alcohol. I usually drink a 12 pack, if not more of hurricane high gravity a night when iI geyget home from work. And with the high alcohol % that hurricane high grav grab(8.1 % per beer) a 12 pack is equal to about 24 bud lights....I don't know if the reason I started drinking soo much was because of something in my brain, or if it was because I simply switched one addiction for another...I'd truely like to know the exact reason why. I never really cared for being drunk or buzzed when I was on opiates and now, alcohol is my DOC without a doubt, besides subs...

there is something about alcohol and ex-opiate heads. almost everyone i know who has stopped opiates successfully is a hardcore alkie now. i personally feel that addiction is just as bad if not worse. (minus the acute opiate w/d)

ugh i hope i live to see the day where pot finally becomes excepted around the world mainstream... perhaps less folks would drink? idk

but i do know that as opiate addicts our brains' chemistry and all changes supposedly. supposedly thats one of the reasons that ORT is supposed to help. your brain needs time to "heal" and not function like an addict's brain. perhaps this is along the lines of the reasoning?

When drinking I seem to take way more opies than if I'm not. A couple weeks ago I was having a lot of bourbon and seemed like everytime I turned around I was popping oxy left and right. My best recollection was somewhere near 500 mg that day. I am happy in the 260mg area.

So Drinking and Opies do not mix, they make you do way more of both and thats dangerous.

#2. I came across some adderall. This has allowed me to ween way way down(oxy) in just a week. By cutting my use in half almost overnight and it has taken my want to drink away.

I can't do these things for long. supply limited and I really don't like the adderall feeling. But it's great if you want to get some things under control..

maybe the reason that worked for you is cuz oxycodone is an upper as far as opiates/opioids go(imo). hydrocodone is the same way for me. so the speedyness you needed was replaced by the amphetamine. im pretty sure if you were in full blown w/d the adderall would worsen some of the symptoms.

OP was hitting more along the lines of why heroin/opiate addicts that get clean, seem to be more susceptible to alcohol addiction. He also asked how alcohol actually becomes physically addictive in your brain. he also asked about how to avoid the addiction. i would answer those if i had more good reliable info. sry OP.

i had a "break" from opiates for about a year back in 2007. There was never a time in my life where i was so willing to drink nasty ass off brands of beer and whiskey. years before that i used to drink mostly high end stuff. aged whiskeys and dry hopped IPA's. well that turned into R&R and Magnums haha! so its funny u mention the hurricane. i think it shows more of an addiction when u dont mind the cheap stuff... just my opinion.
I cant drink at all while im still taking subs, it seems to give me a headache if i have more than one or two drinks.

i do however use liquor to increase the BA of my subs. it works good. just like 2-3 ml of a nice liquor like belvidere or patron so it doesnt taste like shit. look it up if u interested bupeman14

A lot of ex heroin addicts do switch to alcohol in my experience. I'm not sure why, whether it is just the need to alter how they feel or if it is something that has occurred in the brain during opiate addiction that makes them reach for the alcohol.
I know when I had a break of about 3 months from heroin in the 1990's I found myself drinking 6 cans of Stella each evening, whereas when I was using heroin I never felt the urge to drink alcohol at all.
It's very easy to switch one addiction for another so be careful people.

Don't drink everyday.

Heroinism physical damage to body < Alcoholism physical damage to body.

I appreciate the responses. if anyone has any science behind these claims that'd be awesome.

ive been clean from iv dope for 5 weeks. over the past 4 weeks I've had 2-4 drinks usually every evening. sometimes beer but usually whiskey. I know the symptoms of addiction and say that I display pretty much none of them at this point, but does anyone think it's at all possible I'm dependent?

for instance I had one drink at 2pm today and nothing since

With that type of use, first signs of dependence will be insomnia when you try to go a night without drinking. Hangovers, start to become your sober mood. You get the urge to drink more and earlier.

You're getting to the edge where alcohol starts to become problematic. I'd cut back and drink only 3 days a week. Beer vs hard liquor really doesn't make a big difference, hard stuff is easier to abuse though.

Yeah, I also juggled an opiate habit with an alcohol problem for around a year. I think if you're an addictive person, then it doesn't really matter what substance you become addicted to; any drug that provides an escape from reality could become a big problem. It would be far better if you could reduce your drinking nights to as few as possible per day; an alcohol problem can get pretty messy, it would be far better to avoid it from happening.

When I am on opiates I rarely drink, maybe 3-4 drinks once or twice a week, and the occasional social event where I will drink more. Off opiates I will drink a lot more, but the hangovers are a dangerous situation because opiates take very good care of them. I drank a lot before I was heavy into opiates, I've lost the thirst because the hangovers suck so bad. Nonetheless it seems common to replace opiates with alcohol as an addiction. Its a lot more affordable and I guess socially acceptable (not IMO). Also its the route Eric Clapton took in his substance abuse and he didn't need to worry about affording the drugs.

^^ For all of it's evil, sinister reputation, opiates are far less damaging to the body than drugs you can walk into a shop and buy. This really pisses me off; why is people refuse to even think about this shit before making their knee-jerk judgements?

It's common to replace opiates with alcohol is because alcohol is legal...

^^exactly i was just thinking about this and was about to post that.

its because its more excepted in general... so they feel like they aren't necessarily "breaking the rules" as bad.

thats a big part of it.

and yeah hangovers suck ass now it seems. i get them easily.
