Laser eye surgery

I know two people that have had this done, both are delighted with the results. One had it done nearly 20 years ago when it was first available, so really was a lot more of a risk then. But he still maintains it's the best decision he's ever made. My other friend is also delighted with the results, although his eyes now appear a bit "starey" and intense looking if you know what I mean.
This is amplified when he takes stimulants and so now he can't get in anywhere if he's taken something cos it's really obvious by his eyes. Strange, but overall that's a small price to pay for being able to actually see again!

I've had some pretty invasive medical procedures done in the past but the idea of this freaks the shit out of me! Do they do it under anaesthetic?

Nope! Well, it's local anaesthetic eye drops but you're fully conscious when you have a laser zapped into your eye. I can't say it's the most pleasant thing I've ever had done to me, but it's only for about 5 seconds per eye..

when i went to get tested they put some drops in my eyes to open my pupils wide. Nobody warned me before hand that i should take sun glasses, i was literally blinded by light coming out of the place after that. It was not a pleasant way to try to get back home, i must have seemed like some kind of vampire. Argh get that light away from me. :!

I don't think I could have this done without blinking.

Nah, I think the eye drops stop you blinking. Plus they have suction clamps to hold your eyeball still while they do it..

Honestly it's not as bad as it sounds. 8)

it does sound very bad: suction clamps on your eye balls and lazer zaps. 8o

How does it affect your sight for reading things close up, like an A to Z or something where the print is really tiny ? Its not much good correcting short sightedness if you cant then see things properly close up ? With glasses you can just take them off to read that stuff if you're short sighted, but if your vision has been adjusted i guess that could become a problem ?

I was told that my reading vision would likely deteriorate a few years sooner than it would naturally, but other than that, it shouldn't affect it straight away.
