Who plays the guitar here, and how good are you ?

Of course. The problem with fretwanking is that that is all it is though - technique sans soul. Is simply showing off how quickly you can move your fingers. There is no musicality in it. It says nothing. It is pointless for anything other than impressing the easily impressed :p;)<3

There's a difference between moving your fingers as fast as you can and playing fast lead parts that fit the chord structure and the rest of the music. Play a fast locrian lick on a guitar and it's soulless wank, play the same thing on a violin and suddenly it's high brow classical music.

But any playing is technical to some degree - otherwise you'd just have somebody hit the strings with a pair of gloves on. I think technical playing got a bad name in the 80s - things have changed now. There's players who are technically brilliant and tasteful.

It depends on the player tho doesn't it shammy. I mean who played quicker than John Coltrane? Was that saxwanking or was it reaching for God? Who played quicker than Duane Allman or Hendrix improvising? I think what you actually mean is you don't like a certain type of 80s heavy metal player. Fast guitar playing has been around since Django. Used tastefully fast playing is incredibly exciting and it's beautiful to see someone so devoted to his instrument.

i think the point is that, while fast playing can be moving/soulful/whatever, simply playing super fast doesn't automatically make a piece of music such.

Can / Could play geetar.
Acoustic & Electric - Never favoured which I loved most, but there's nothing like just having an Acoustic alone: No amplification, no effect pedals, nothing but the self and the guitar. I think a lot of "Rockstar wannabees" don't pick up an Acoustic and just create ideas. It's a very special way of recognising how you and the guitar sync together.

Also played the Bass. It's a very absorbing instrument when you play it. Be it just through an Amp, or with effects (I remember having a fucking wicked time with my Bass and the RAT2 Distortion pedal), and even though it seems the instrument that you get the Neanderthal of the band to play, it remains a very close instrument.

And (I'm just showing off now), fuuuuuucking helllll!!! Playing the drums is like therapy, anger management, self expression and being "one" [gags for the reader] with the percussion. It's the absolute favourite thing to let loose on when you're angry or sad or happy or jumping like a fucking BZP-Fueled Mexican jumping bean.
It sits at the back of a "Band" for the most part, but man..... I see it as the superglue that holds said "Band" together.

Anyway, yeah... I played all of those (not difficult at all if it seems or sounds it) and had the most fucking wicked times and the most hellish times while playing them.
Being in a band isn't pretty... You usually end up either squabbling or sitting on the side-lines while the squabbling occurs.

Nope. Fretwanking a violin would also be soulless wank in my book. Musicality is the thing. Classical music tends to be far more rich and complex than rock guitar solos... at least good classical music is. Obviously there are exceptions to my anti-fretwanking policy - it can be done well... just isn't the vast majority of the time. Had a mate who was really into all those highly technical gee-tar bods - the Satrianos and Malmsteens of this world - and every single one of 'em left me cold. However, there are guitarists who sometimes play fast - and indeed fretwank - who inject soul and musicality into it. Jimi Hendrix is an obvious example. But the players who are famous specifically for their technical, fretwanking prowess just bore me to death. For me, genuinely unlistenable. But each to their own, eh :)<3

As an olive branch, an example of fretwanking done right (imo and all that). Billy Corgan is my fave guitarist and he definitely fretwanks sometimes... but with soul <3

(oh, and the effects-laden cello is just plain genius <3)

There's definitely something cathartic about playing bass. Locking in with the bass drum and just grooving away. Love it. <3

@ Shambles - I think we've just hit the nail on the head there, musicality and context is definitely the key. I absolutely agree that the lead line has to fit the music. Playing fast for fast's sake is always going to be boring, no doubt about it. For what it's worth, I'm not really into the Malmsteens and Satrianis either, as their stuff tends to be very samey. It's all about dynamics imo.

Think this is about the third or fourth time we've had this thread but heyho. Once more with feeling :D.

sorry i didnt know that, ive not been on here as long as you. Glad to see the thread has had a bit of activity and its interesting to hear others tales. MNN i thought the drummer was meant to be the thickest person in the band lol not that it really matters.

I was also in a "band", really a dreadfull talentless racket, however we did have a fantastic lead guitarist who occasionally decided to grace us with his presence. He would do great stuff in rehearsals, but when ever we got on stage (about 6 times, once infront of about 200 people, and there was like 4 claps at the end of our tracks:o) he would get all arrogant and just kind of play wank shit that didnt fit at all, in some kind of protest at having to play with a bunch of muppets.

Our drummer was good, but myself on bass and our rhythm guitarist were pretty bad. However the whole thing did get me an easy girl, so it was all worth it just for that alone.

I play the tin whishtle

Nice, the sound has such a "feeling" to it imo.
Hard to put into words but makes me think of camp fires, magic mushroom trips in the woods & that kinda vibe.

On a Violin tip Scala from Britians Got Talent sounded amazing, though I know it was electric.

Need some goddamn Cello players in here too, Mstislav Rostropovich is one of my musical hero's.
Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor <3

i love the electric violin - bob dylan filled one of his albums with what i presume is electric violin, though it could just be a non electric one placed next to a mic of course, not sure. The album is called "Desire" its the one with "Hurricane" and "one more cup of coffee for the road" - nearly all brialliant tracks. One of his best.
