I've recently just gotten into this as I spend most of my time at a psychiatric rehabilitation centre and so on.

My thoughts on this is that it's a very powerful ancient healing art that has almost been forgotten about, or at least has no use in current mainstream therapy. So I was very impressed to find it can do a lot more to make me feel better than medicines and "conversations" can (though I really knew this already). It can also make you feel better than, or as good as on drugs, or rather releases a whole bunch of feel-good chemicals in your body.

So those times you're feeling really deep down in the pit it's certainly something that WILL be able to lift you up and make a difference, but of course providing you pick the right kind of music. Mostly classical or other types of healing, spiritual music. Modern music with discordant sounds, like traditional rock-music, no. It does more harm than good, although it can provide a release which can feel like a relief, and of course you can enjoy it so it can help that way, but that is only temporary, and afterwards you are even more damaged in body and mind (it has a "fracturing effect").

Give it a chance and see what it can do. Just lay down, relax, and let the music wash over you. Put it on repat if need be. It's the harmony that does it. There is too much disharmony and discordance in this world. And of course the upliftment. "Morning Mood" is like one continious ecstacy.

Or can anyone tell me after listening to these 3 in a row they don't feel any better?

- A Moment in Heaven - Bradfield

- Morning Mood - Grieg

I'm gonna have to disagree with you here. When I'm really depressed I listen to doom metal and shit like that and it actually has the opposite effect (at least on me) as you think it would. It's a release but I don't think it's any more temporary than any other music someone might listen to, and I certainly don't feel more damaged after listening to it. One band that comes to mind is Type O Negative... Their music has gotten me through a lot of rough times.

I agree with you Ninae.

Music therapy can be SO helpful. I listened to the embedded video and I feel more relaxed and even a little sleepy now :)

Here is an interesting link from the American Music Therapy Association about what music therapy is.
