OK, so in no way do I wish to make light of a tragedy. Anytime a person dies from a party drug it is a horrible thing.

In all likelihood the two afflicted individuals

A. Got a bad batch
B. Had a allergic reaction
C. Mixed with other substances at a big event like that alcohol would come to mind first
D. Over heated and under hydrated on a steamy hot late summer day

all of the above can lead to tragedy. But why are reporters acting as though Molly is something new just because of a new nickname. Why are they saying Molly is pure MDMA, a key ingredient in Ecstacy. MDMA is Ecstacy, same thing it was back in the 1990's if you had a good source.

Molly is just the latest catchy name replaceing E or X or MICK-E at one point refered to in the late 80's as a drug that made you smile like mickey mouse.

Is it just me or is this just very bad reporting to act as though a Molley in a gelcaps is pure MDMA, and a pressed E pill has to have something else in it????? Putting crystal like white powder isn't new ..... and for gods sake just cause it is in a gelcap doesn't mean it can't be laced with speed or heroin or something else.

I think speed is less commonly sold as mdma compared to all these other rc's now. Just look at the list of rc's, they're coming out with new ones all the time and many are somewhat similar in structure to mdma. The general public has no clue about any of this either. There's a descent amount of chemicals out there that get lethal around 100 mgs or so too.

Ppl just like to sound dramaric and dont care if that makes them in acurate

Most people who buy "molly" don't care about the fine details either (eg they don't test the pills etc.) so in some ways the reporting is "accurate". The most common MDMA adulterants (BZP/TFMPP and methylone) actually might be less harmful than MDMA overall. (Methamphetamine is not an uncommon cut though.)

The adulterant you absolutely do not want to see is PMMA. It still keeps popping up in EcstasyData test reports :/. Even some random "neutral" cuts make me pause (this ED pill for instance cut with acetaminophen, for instance, ugh what a bad idea...)

I just found it puzzling to cancel an entire festival over two drug deaths and a few more ODs. It didn't seem like the promoters were negligent, and it's not like no other festival has had deaths (Bonnaroo has had a few over the years to give one example).

i heard that electric zoo actually ran out of water.... wtf were they thinking. strong strong planning
brb sell water for $4-5 per bottle. buy water in giant cases for like <25 cents each. it's almost all profit!!!

Reporters don't really give a shit. A tragic death caused by drugs is just a juicy story. They'll misinform all they want.

I think what happened and the subsequent reaction underscores our responsibility to promote the shit out of HR. the EDM scene is growing exponentially and there are a lot of ignorant people out there.

I didn't even know what RCs were until I endured several months of nasty anxiety after getting a shit batch of Molly...

In this news story about the Zoo, Dr. Steven Garner, Emergency Medicine Specialist at Methodist Hospital said "There is no safety level for casual users. Those who are taking it are running the risk of having dementia, brain problems, depression later on in life because this alters the normal structure of the brain – there’s no doubt about it.”

Uh wow, is this true?

they just had it on cbs nightly news.. they also said that molly is the purest form of mdma... sigh.. what idiots and by the sounds of it they are probably are going to do more "scare reporting" on it because they said at the end of the report more of this to come... its going to be like the time article back in 2000 that mdma causes holes in the brain bullshit all over again

An amusing note is that one of the side effects of SSRI-style anti-depressants is exactly one of the same side effects as MDMA (serotonin receptor downregulation).

I wonder if said Doc thinks SSRIs "alter the normal structure of your brain" too. Probably not. :p

Just for the record there was an EDM 2-day event here and the heat index was ~100 degrees at sunset. Nobody died. There were lots of horny bitches though who like to rave!

When I first heard this, apparently it was two people who died at the event? Someone was going to ask the coroners office about it to confirm what the exact cause of death was!

The coroner's report will most likely not be released for several days. Which means the press really has no idea what the casualties consumed. All of their talk about ecstacy/MDMA/Molly is premature at this point.

If the incidents had been called by excessive alcohol consumption; do you really think the city would have asked for a day of the festival to be cancelled?8) When Dave Matthews and the Rolling Stones comes around here we often have incidents. When problems are alcohol based a double-standard is often applied. If I went to Electric Zoo, drank too much beer and committed vehicular homicide on the way back from the festival...I doubt there would be talk about cancelling the event. People would have said, "OGM should have been more responsible."

On the other hand; if I took a bad pill and killed myself...the government and the press would call for Electric Zoo to be cancelled. Doesn't make any sense to me with you look at the number of alcohol related deaths and health problems.

Electronic shows ALWAYS get a bad rep, it's always been this way.
The mainstream media likes to blame the event, the promoters, the music, and the vastly ignorant masses eat this up because they don't understand and are way to fucking lazy to take the time to actually think "hey, maybe these irresponsible kids taking 5 pills of untested powder are at fault?"
But no, they blame the music, the event itself and the whole scene as being irresponsible drug addicts when this isn't the case.
Sure it's foolish to try and spread the idea that a majority of ravers don't use drugs, it's just not true.
When I'm raging at the front of a show and I look back, all I see is a sea of dime sized pupils, but again it's not the musics fault people get hurt, and it's not the drugs fault.
It's the old saying of "If someone buys a gun to kill themselves, is it the gun's fault?"

Another bone I would to pick now that we're on the topic is all the restrictions placed on electronic shows such as where the events can be held, the times, etc.
People like to think that since lots of people who attend are on drugs that they are violent hooligans.
Trust me, I'm from alberta, the redneck province of canada.
We have loads of country festivals which are all ages and serve liquor where people are CONSTANTLY being beat up or even stabbed due to rowdy drunk assholes.
I've also been to large electronic shows where you feel nothing but love from everyone around you, where you get hugs and high fives from almost everyone you pass.
To be honest in all the electronic events I've attended in my life I have never seen a single fight or even arguement

Slang names for MDMA have always been around.

Dying from MDMA is a very rare occurrence. Not to say it doesn't happen, because it totally does.

I think Folley once linked to a article or something that suggest most 'Molly' in America is actually bk-MDMA (methylone).

I feel sorry for the fool without a test kit taking 500+mg of bk-MDMA.

Now the New York Post is not known for it's stellar journalism but I found this interesting quote that supposedly came from the woman that died:

“I just took six hits of Molly,’’ tragic 20-year-old Olivia Rotondo told an EMS worker on Saturday, referring to the drug’s street name — before suddenly collapsing in a seizure and dying.
Just took SIX hits?!!! Even with pure MDMA that would be an awful lot to consume. Of course no one knows what she really took but if she did in fact take six hits of anything in a short period of time and depending on the size and composition of each "hit"... Well, that probably would be enough to take down a Belgium Draft Horse much less a person of her body weight.8o

What defines a 'hit'? She took six hits of untested 'Molly'...

It would be nice if these journalist would suggest that people who are going to use club drugs obtain a test kit.

Test kits would save the world.
