So I think I may have just had Serotonin Syndrome, and yes, I'm an idiot

The title says it all. This all started around 3 hours ago and the "intensity" is over right now. I still feel weird, but hopefully this makes sense.

Background:
Every year or so, I will get an Adderall prescription for a month or two when I'm in a crunch to get some things done. I've never had a problem with Adderall interactions, and I am always doing research and checking drug interactions to make sure that I am as safe as possible. I've been extremely busy lately, and I just picked up my prescription (along with high blood pressure medication that was prescribed) this past Wednesday and started taking it immediately.

My daily supplement regime for the last year:
  • each morning with coffee: 100mg 5-HTP and 1g L-Tyrosine
  • 3x a day: 500mg Vitamin B12, 1g Piracetam, 500mg Aniracetam, 250mg Centrophenoxine, 15mg Noopept
  • I just recently added St. Johns Wort about 2 weeks ago 500mg 3x a day,20mg Adderall 2x a day and high blood pressure medication 1x a day

I never really started noticing anything unusual until this past Friday. Even the first dose of Adderall which was later on in the afternoon around 4 was fine. Around 9 or so, I took another 20mg along with the last batch of racetams and SJW. Within 30 minutes, I was feeling nauseous, having a hard time thinking straight, sweating, temp was 99.7F, heart rate was 132 bpm, and just a general feeling of being scatterbrained. But I had no tremors or any of the other symptoms. It was really weird. I ended up riding that out for a few hours and figured a few bourbons would help "depress" things. Around 2:00am, I took 1mg Melatonin, 350mg Valerian Root, and 100mg 5-htp. I actually woke up around 4 about puke, and so I took some Emetrol and passed out again. I now realize that it was unwise of me to drink the bourbon as it increases blood pressure, and taking the 5-htp as it probably just prolong the serotonin syndrome. I just chalked all of that up as I had just taken too much Adderall (as I have in the past - up to 120mg in a day before), and thought my body wasn't used to it yet.

So I start out with the same routine today, but with only one 2 rounds of the racetams and one dose of SJW. And the same thing begins to happen around 9:00pm (2.5 hours ago), about an hour after I took my 2nd Adderall dose. I get nauseous, so I hit up the Emetrol again. Then I start to get scatterbrained and begin to sweat, with a temp of 99.5F. However, I didn't feel as bad as I did the other night. So I hit up the intertubes and begin to research interactions, and lo and behold, pretty much everything I'm taking interacts with Adderall. This is what I get for not doing my usual homework beforehand. About an hour and a half ago, I hit up 1g of Phenibut, and I think it is beginning kick in now as I'm feeling tired.

Good news: I think that little episode is over. Bad news: I'm now wondering what kind of damage I've done. I'm not going to lie, I'm a little bummed that I "wasted" the Adderall buzz tonight to get some work done. I've also just read that Phenibut and Adderall make quite the concoction, so I'm hoping that the Pheni might kick in and give me a consolation prize of sorts.

So there you have it, this is what I get for not doing my homework. Learn from my mistakes.

Hello- I'm sorry I don't have any insight for you, as I have no knowledge about your medications. I do have a few questions though! Are any of of the meds you were takin an SSRI? What do ya think caused your nausea? Any idea how high of a dose is needed to cause serotonin syndrome? Vitamins and minerals interact with adderall? I had a weird experience last week though I'm not too sure if its related to the adderall or not. I take 40 mg of flouxetine (prozac) a day as well as a bunch of vitamin and minerals.. Lets see, most days- vitamin d, active folate, b 12, fish oil, and a vitamin mineral complex. I also take a out 40 or 50 mg of adderall. Last week I had a a bunch of strange symptoms that happens to occur the night I popped adderall. Swollen lymph nodes, fever of 102, tiny little bumps all over my chest, just generally feel

Sorry sent too soon..... Chills as well, throat slightly swollen, Just generally felt like shit. That lasted a few days then I recovered. Our symptoms are pretty different but mine seem to mimic serotonin syndrome.. But I was under the impression that it would take a shiiiittt load of drugs to cause that, way more than you and i consumed, especially since its such a rare occurrence. Just thought I'd share my experience. I hope things work out for you! :)

icameasarat - that sucks to hear, glad you are feeling better. I've been around the block as far as "substances" go, and have probably indulged in just about everything - testing the limits of excess of course. I have never felt like I did these past 2 occasions. I did quite a bit of reading, and then cross-checked the interactions of adderall with the supplements I take daily, and the ones that popped up on WebMD as a "significant interaction" was SJW and 5-htp - as they increase serotonin levels as well. I've also read that Picamilon is considered an MAOI, which is also considered possibly unsafe with adderall. It was a pretty wild ride I must say. It was obvious that something was very wrong, but I didn't know what it was. Thank goodness I had Phenibut on me, as that seemed to calm me down pretty good. I feel much better now, but extremely low mental energy. I would just encourage you to ask Dr. Google about the different medications and hit up WebMD as well. I'm now reading and trying to figure out how to best recover from this.

Yeah almost anything that works on serotonin is bad to take with adderall, this includes nootropics, ssri's, other drugs, etc. Glad you guys are ok but i hope you learn from your mistakes and hopefully maybe someone else will too with your thread.

Also icameasarat: i guess now you know that it does not take a bunch of crazy drugs to cause serotonin syndrome, its actually quite easily to induce but usually mild cases like yours and DapperDan but obviously very uncomfortable. I admit that ive stupidly taken quite a few things together that should have cause it but ive thankfully never experienced this.

So, I have been looking into it and my systems do mirror ss symptoms, but I can't say for sure. My sickly symptoms- sweats, chills, fever, spastic muscles, rapid heart beat etc all went away within 24-48 hours, but I am still experiencing, a week later, slightly uncomfortable systems (twitching behind my left eye, slight jerky muscle spasms) I did turn to Dr. Google, dapple Dan, and found out that trAzodone interacts with both prozac and adderall and can lead to SS if combined. I've been on 100 mg of trAzodone to treat my stubborn insomnia after i sobered up from alcohol 10 months ago. So, that in combination with 40 mg of prozac and 50 mg of adderall may have done it for me. The drugs you mention, especially St. John's wort kept pupping up during my ss googling. You mentioned you were on a MAOI too? I see that possible fatal drug interaction warning on almost every medication box, even in over the counter pain relievers, If what you and I did experience was a more mild case of SS symptoms, will a complete recovery occur on its own as long as we avoid the serotonin drugs? Every article is persistent on insisting immediate doctor intervention or it will be fatal bbbbut that seems a bit excessive in our case? Can't find any info on mild ss. How are you feeling today?

felt much better the next day, and haven't had any issues since. i would lay off everything i was taking. the racetams are rumored to cause excitotoxicity in the brain, and essentially cause burnout. i‘m not prescribed any MAOIs, but i will take some picamilon every now and then, and some people think that it acts as an MAOI.

i'm just glad all that is over with, that was a rough night.
