Syrian civil war thread

Every time I watch a session of Parliament, it seems like the UK is on the verge of civil war.

What's with the huge golden scepter on the table?

23536: It's part of some ritual they do - http://www.parliament.uk/site-information/glossary/mace/

I find our Parliament to be a bit of an embarrassment to watch. Usually it's just a verbal punch up between the two sides of the house with lots of political rhetoric and double-speak that never actually answers the question but instead tries to blame someone else for the problem!

Just watched a shpeel available to our region. What a joke.

Everyone is treating the Syria gateway to WWIII as a freaking joke.

Trying to educate myself here. Why do you think intervention in Syria would lead to WWIII? Are you banking on the idea that Syria would retaliate? Possibly getting Israel involved or something?

I'm not, you only have to listen to Wesley Clarke to know this. It'll for sure happen in the next 10 or so years UNLESS something dramatic changes.

But I am not holding my breath.

As MP George Galloway just said in the House of Commons, "If Assad is mad enough to launch a chemical attack when UN weapons inspectors are literally 15 minutes drive away, what do you think he is likely to do if attacked with cruise missiles?". There's a danger that he will attack Israel, who will then attack Syria, Iran could get involved, and Russia.

As also said in the Common's debate, it is the 100 year anniversary of world war 1 next year. No one believed at the time that the assassination of one man would lead to a situation spiraling out of control and becoming a world conflict. There is definitely a danger of that happening in this instance.

There's a strategic importance to the area. Nations compete for power in the region and over the resources. Neither Russia, China, the UK, or the USA will let each other have it, and if one tries to impose itself on it, the others will jump in.

^Wars with small players on the global stage is one thing, but direct conflict with another large and internationally capable nation is another. It's in my opinion that neither the US, Russia, China or the UK are too keen on going to war against each other directly. Impossible? Of course not. History has shown that large countries will confront each other directly. But I don't foresee a war on the scale of WWII happening any time soon. What is more likely is that we'll see trade consequences, a deterioration of diplomatic closeness and proxy war instead.

UK Parliament has just voted. Cameron has been defeated! The UK will NOT be involved in any military action against Syria.

Anybody seen the footage of the alleged napalm attacks? What the hell is all that white gunk they're covered with?

The cynic in me finds this really hard to believe. It just so happens that the BBC decides to cover this as MP's are voting for/against intervention? A rogue strike using napalm, for absolutely no reason? Again the cynic in me thinks this is highly suspicious.

Its probably their flesh. Severe 3rd degree/4th degree burns.

Incidentally:

use against civilian populations was banned by the United Nations Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) in 1980

Kerry: 1,429 killed in chemical attack, including 426 children. 3 days before chemical attack, Syrian regime members were preparing for weapons use.

i dont understand how anybody can be against military action.....

imagine if there was civil war in usa, yeah, your home not just some arab shithole you dont give fuck about, image that people will fight goverment for two three years with ar 15s,being slaughtered by all the gadgets of us army and the rest of the world will be like "help? nope, just die peasents"

They still haven't established that this is an imminent threat to the US that requires the President to act without the approval of Congress. Kerry's credibility argument is baloney (I'm talking about the argument that the US places itself at risk by not acting because its credibility is lessened). They have to prove to the American people that it is at actual risk, not perceptual risk.
