TDS A close friend gets 10 years in prison for personal heroin possession

Terrible laws terrible judges..

A friend of mine got caught while he was picking up a personal amount of heroin in Wyoming. He had never been arrested in the state, but he did have quite a few prior's. For Heroin I think it was either his second or third offense. I've never been happy about him being a junkie, he didn't shoot up but he definitely still had a problem. Giving 10 years definitely isn't going to help shit, this kids only 22 years old 8( I wish there was some way I could help him, but sadly there is nothing I can do. He's currently appealing his case but who knows how long it will take and if it will even do any good. Another kid I know (in a different state) robbed a bank while on probation and he's only looking at three years! WTF?!?! :X

I wonder about US court system. Last week was TV broadcast in USA one bitch wife killed (hired killer-her boss) her husband, and gets 5 years for it. Maybe just better start killing spouses to avoide long term in jail for health reason...So sorry for this 22 years old boy..
You , guys, live in terrible country.. No country on earth jail so many sick people SAHME!

I currently live in Nebraska, I'm on the Eastern side of the state bordering Iowa in a major city, but NE borders Wyoming and CO on the Western side of the state. It's amazing how much of a difference what side of the line you're on can make in regards to drug laws...

I've always wanted to go to Yellowstone, way up in the NW corner, but I've been through Wyoming a bunch of times and I've never gotten a warm fuzzy feeling from that place! It really does have bad vibes...I can't explain it, but a lot of those desolate states up there, the people have this angry, mistrustful cowboy, gun testosterone thing going on that's not too fun, and the cops are complete dicks!

I'm taking a trip next week out to the west Coast with my girlfriend, and just looking at Wyoming gave me a sense of foreboding...I don't even wanna go through there on I-80, I might just dip down and go through CO instead, especially after reading this!

It's amazing, I'm from the East Coast and I've spent a lot of time on the West Coast and in the south. The south has a reputation for being racist and conservative, but in a lot of places it's actually really kind of laid back and cool. The true Christian conservative douche-bags reside here, in the Midwest!

You have these people who have never even really seen a "criminal" in their whole lives with this pissy, self-righteous "lock everybody up for ever" mentality, and they're just assholes! The governors and legislators in these states have been getting elected on these "get tough on crime" campaigns for decades and that's how you end up with these outrageous prison sentences....You'll do a year for a single joint in Utah!

They just lump all "criminals" together, and being a violent criminal and being a drug-user aren't the same thing at all. Anyone with half a brain would realize that, right? But all it takes in a lot of these places is a few high profile cases of some whacko tweaked out of his mind on crystal breaking into a house and killing a family, and all of the sudden they're passing state law to send anyone that gets caught with anything to prison for years and years, as if that's somehow gonna deter the truly criminal insane!
many many officials in Russia goes the same way Even worst. DO you know how they heal drug addicts in Russia? COps bringing half a kilo good quality heroin mixed with deadly poison in every city around MOscow. NO more drug addicts- all dead. I am sure the you can imagine in states like Wyoming Maine -in general east and Arizona-Texas mentality reminds me about old good USSR. You guys so close to USSR now- you just cannot imagine how vlose. Everything under control, no freedoms of any kind. You can't talk on the phone openly, you do not know what expect from Government tomorrow. Next step -fear of doorbells. It will be different fear Different from USSR experience, Thanks God in USA every smart man has a gun in his hose.. But not in Russia. And law related to drugs even worse than in USA First drug related arrest and you 99% behind bars

we live in a great country.. we just need to get these idiots out of the government and modernize our policies and leave the rest of the world alone.. but washington.. some of those corrupt politicians are dug in like and alabama ticks.. I think we shale see some pretty sweeping change once the baby boomers give up the reins and knowing that generation they wont go quietly into the night though.

I hate to say it, but it does look like we're going that way!

I am very sorry to hear about your friend. This so called *war on drugs* is a war on ourselves. I always say, follow the money trail. Prisons need to fill their quota and sadly drugs are a straight road there. They say it is easier to get heroin in prison than it is out on the street, I truly hope your friend sweats out a cure instead of continuing his addiction, but 10 years is NOT fair. Not even A DAY in prison for drugs is fair. Again, you have my deepest sympathy and I hope your friend can somehow overcome this.

QFT. The privatizing of American prisons is something that makes 1984 look mild. I'm really sorry for both you and your friend.

War on drugs logic.. ruining peoples live in the name of saving them.

Its failed, sickening, ruined millions of peoples lives, and is inhumane. Privatized prisons should be outlawed forever.. period.. no one should make money off locking people up.. period.

Fucking ten years for possession is a damn shame.
Now pardon me if I didn't see in your post OP, but did he have a large amount with intent to sell?
Or just for personal use?
Either way I don't see how 10 years in prison will do him any good, maybe rehab and an ankle bracelet.

Prison is for the sick fucks:
Rapists
Pedophiles
Murderers
Terrorists

But for someone with drugs to get a sentence like that? Is beyond me.
One day we will get the system right, like dame it's 2013 and we're letting the sick fucks out to roam are streets and harm innocent people, and filling the prisons with people with a drug habit. You can treat and help addicts but you can't fix a psycho rapist.

That couldn't have been said better. He had a few grams of Heroin (roughly $300 worth) in Wyoming anything over a gram is a felony.

Generally with good behavior the time sentenced is cut in half, so if hes stays out of trouble in prison, he may serve 5 years. Usually I think parole is mandatory for all felons leaving the system and I've heard that's no cake walk. It's unfortunate that the US is programmed this way, but you work with what you're given. 1st offenses are generally a slap on the wrist (ILC), but having 3 heroin related charges, if I'm not mistaken, does not look good from the judge's standpoint so they may be trying to make an example of him to deter others.

Also in Ohio they usually try to get you in rehab in lieu of a jail sentence. I may have overlooked some posts, but what state is this?

I just wanted to add that depending on the county too, some counties are a lot tougher on drug possession that others. There's a particular county where I live (a few minutes away) that doesn't take kindly to any crime whatsoever.

The State is Wyoming. I'm not sure what the required percentages (the amount of jail time that has to be served from a sentence) are in that state. I've been looking hard but I'm still trying to figure that out. I know it changes drastically from state to state. One state may have a 30% requirement while another could require 80%.

Good news people! Looks like with good behavior he'll be serving 4 years rather than 10. The details are a little blurry, but I know for sure that his sentence was reduced. IMO 4 years is still pretty harsh for personal herion, but it's a hell of a lot better than 10 years! Still, let this be a lesson learned STAY THE FUCK OUT OF WYOMING!

Think about 4 years ago...Now imagine having spent since the time you thought of in prison! Now think about a little baggie filled with powder that you intend for personal use...Utterly fucking ridiculous!

I have some great news now! He ended up doing just a year because he won his appeal! :D All charges dropped, no felonies. I recently talked to him. He's happy to be clean, and I think he's learned a lot. Lucky for him, his parents do pretty well financially so I'm sure that they got him a top notch lawyer for the appeal.
