The Sad Thread (Anti-Snoo)

Right sorry, bit frazzled today so I'm not being very clear ><
I have a PC with Windows 8, I think the hard drive (this would be the system drive) failed because all the stuff that was going wrong seems to point to that - the computer had been going ridiculously slowly for weeks, would freeze up for about 2mn every half hour or so (even in safe mode), and there was a repetitive clicking sound just before it crashed. Then it just went black and I haven't been able to turn it back on since.
In the past few weeks it would also randomly shut down every so often and then start back up and 'check' my hard drive for about 15mn (though not quite sure what that means exactly). Don't know that much about computers at all but it would seem to point to that no? :\

By not being able to turn it on do you mean that when you turn it on literally nothing happens, or that you get past the BIOS screen and then the comp won't boot?

It sounds like a problem with the power supply, Pagey. I'm not an expert and could be wrong. I'm sure there are others here who know more?

^ yep.... If nothing happens at all then you might be in better shape than you think. As Morphling says it could well be the power supply. It could also be that the fan on the processor has packed in, and actually that, or the power supply being at fault tallies with the lockups and freezes you mentioned... could have been the system overheating.

Have you got any other computers around which you can try putting your HD in? Is it laptop or desktop?

I don't want to get your hopes up too much in case the HD is actually buggered, but going on what you've said it could well be the power supply or the processor fan.

Kinda difficult to guess. Not being able to turn it on at all doesn't really point to it being a hard drive problem -- computers are perfectly happy without a hard drive, just not very useful. If it won't turn on _at all_ I'd say that points away from it being the hard drive.

I had a computer glitch and turn off whenever there was any vibration in the room, turned out to be a loose connection. There are lots of faults that could make your computer behave the way you describe. Given that it does nothing when you try to turn it on, I'd say that at least your power supply has gone splat. Power supplies are meant to cut out if there's a problem, to avoid damage, but usually then they'll make a click or a whisper when you try to turn everything back on. They sometimes have a hard on/off switch next to where the power cable goes in that you need to flick to get it to work again. If you've had problems for a while though I wouldn't recommend it, as you could just be doing more damage.

If it were me, I'd disconnect the hard drives, take out the RAM and any peripheral/graphics cards, check all the power connections and try again. If it works, you can replace components til you find the faulty one. If it doesn't, then you've got a rubbish situation of not knowing just how many components are damaged. If the motherboard is dead the chances are it took out the CPU and RAM with it.

You can get a USB adaptor and power supply (e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bipra-SATA-...qid=1376496392&sr=8-1&keywords=usb+sata+power) so you could copy your data onto another computer. Or further damage the disk, depending on if there's a physical problem with the disk or not and how bad it is.

Awesome, thanks very much Morphling & jancrow...I'll try not to get my hopes up too much but I'm not feeling quite as desperate at least :|
It's a laptop, I've got a desktop around which I can try the HD in but gotta go buy the adapter first so I'm going to do that tomorrow I think. Fingers crossed :\
Thanks again for the help.

Edit: just saw your post WithMyLife, thanks a lot for all the detail, I'll try what you said and report back.

Something to be mindful of is that whatever happened has fried your power supply. If it was the hard disk, and you put it in your desktop, it could fry that too. It does sound more like overheating, but be careful! If you have the patience, unplug everything else from the PSU in the desktop you're going to use. I've done a lot of damage by being too hasty in these situations.

I didn't realise you were talking about a laptop, either. All that 'advice' was with a desktop in mind -- I've actually no idea if it's bad advice for a laptop. If things are connected together serially to save wiring then you obviously can't go pulling components out. Think it's pretty difficult to remove anything you're not meant to remove, but again, I've done some damage by getting a bit gung ho with a laptop....

Not necessarily... Power supplies can and do fail of their own accord. As it's a laptop I suspect we're talking an external power supply anyway in which case it's more likely to be the motherboard fan.

Desktop power supplies are normally quite good, when it comes to being damaged by shorts, etc. It's normally big storms and power surges which take them out, and I've found the rest of the machine normally remains unharmed... I've never repaired a PC in which all the parts have failed. As it's about a laptop, I think you'll find the hard drive is fine.

have you tried turning it off and on again?

Very true, I guess dodgy power supply would mean lack of power to the fan, so overheating madness. Since it's a laptop, does it have a light that comes on when it's charging? Does it still come on?

I once plugged a cpu power cable in upsidedown (I figured that you'd only be able to plug it in one way, the right way!) and that blew my PSU, motherboard and CPU, all were completely dead. Obviously that might not happen to someone who hasn't just done something very very retarded. I did replace the parts for that computer, since it was new stuff I was putting together.

Likewise the next PSU I had die -- computer had been flaky then dead for ages. I come along with a new computer, plugged it in, didn't work. Hmmm? Turns out my old was was fine and I had managed to slice through the power cable with my chair. So I gleefully grabbed a new power cable, plugged it into the mains then shoved it into my old computer. BANG!! Sparks!! I'd completely forgotten that it sparked n arced when plugged in in that order (I'm told this is a feature of only shit PSUs). I did have a HDD plugged into that computer, and it still works fine.

Don't be sad. They just go off to see the nice vet for a nice long sleep when they start to feel ropey, we humans don't get that benefit. And up until that point they have pretty boss lives.

Unless they're feral, and then they have a bit of a bum deal.

Yeah but at least when they're feral they don't have to put up with being shoved in a washing machine, cooked in a microwave, or have a four year old swinging it round by it's tail, day in day out.

Eh, I think animals are way too available as pets. It really makes me sad tbh.

Because my dad was a skipper, I spent loads of time waiting around on his boat, or on the quayside at the docks when I was little. There's loads of feral cats all over the place there. Was really cool to watch them stalking and slinking about.
