Tramadol Question

I have been sober for 20 months. I also have peripheral neuropathy, arthritis and stenosis. The various antiinflammatories antiseizure drugs no longer help much. The doc today suggested Tramadol. In researching it, there seems to be varying opinions re: it addictive quality. I don't want to threaten my sobriety, but I also would like some relief so I could walk more than a 5or 10 minutes. Thanks for your input. Gerry

I have a question..

First off, if you don't want to threaten your sobriety what where you using before?

A lot of the time in situations like this using the prescribed medication can be beneficial, and not harmful. It is about being honest with yourself. However, at the same time it could be a very slippery road, and being self aware could save your life.

Thanks SkagKush.......the chemicals were alcohol and benzos.............hadn't used anything else for years before that and then it was truly only recreational pot and very occasional coke and psychedelics. I have been very upfront about all of this with the drs I have seen. I have been trying all sort of nonaddictive stuff, as I said before, for over 2 years. I believe I am quite self aware and I truly have been living in a very small world because of the discomfort, so guess I will give it a try...............may I check back with you later?

Feel free to PM me at any time gerry.

It sounds as if opiates and opiods have not been an issue for you in the past. I will not go out-right and say do what the doc is saying, but it sounds as if this is a very viable option for you. Sometimes you have to sacrifice to live at all.

Be honest with yourself, and know if you need to stop. Keep in mind tram has a ceiling dose, and pushing your luck can have bad side effects like seizures.

Best of luck!

Edit - It remind me of the age old AA situation. "If your taking meds then your not clean."

I could not disagree more. If you take said meds as prescribed, and they help you live a more normal life; then all the power to you.

Thanks again Skagkush. Yes, I know that saying, and many more AA sayings that, personally, I think are more harmful than helpful. One of the many reasons it was not a tool I have chosen to use.

My fretting seems to be all for naught. I took the Tramadol. It gave me some slight relief, esp. from the neuropathy. Also, I don't get the hype, although one would probably have to take a lot more than a prescribed dose to attain any sought after high. For me, it was like taking an aspirin that worked.

I'm taking trams for a neck injury and docs are very willing to prescribe it be careful it's just as bad as dope to quit. Good luck

Just to add to this, it can also be very dangerous to quit because it lowers the seizure threshold, so stopping cold turkey could induce seizures.

I never found tramadol to be helpful, but hopefully this is a good medication choice for you.
