Jazz

Some people these days call it Big Band music, but it'll always be jazz to me baby
Hard bop, bebop, cool, latin, free jazz . . . give me all that shit, yo.

Horace, why are you so funky my man? And Joe Henderson absolutely wrecks his solo. <3

Hells yeah! %)

I've always loved that particular song. I think i first heard it from a local jass musician that did some tutoring for free in my hs Jazz band.

I tried to get the brass part down on the trombone, lets just say it didn't really work out. :D

But i agree that the brass is a small part of what i love about that song.

Whenever i hear horace silver, it makes me think of thelonius monk for some weird reason.

heres a real gem-

They're both piano players, mate!! That Sonny Rollins track is a banger. Hard to go wrong with the great Art Blakey on percussion. Whenever I hear him, it makes me think of Max Roach for some reason. ;)

If you like Song For My Father, check out the Song For my Father mix Madlib did for his Blue Note Remix album, Shades of Blue. I love Madlib, he's had a big influence in my jazz taste. Ever since I first heard Jazz Cats off his Quasimoto album:

Clifford Brown was taken too soon. As was Lee Morgan.

dat Jack DeJohnette drumming. mayne. %)

^ My old trumpet teacher told me that when Helen More (Lee's gal) shot him, she shot him right in the dick. I've never been able to determine whether or not that was true...

If it is true, I don't think I could imagine a worse way to go. Shotguns and genitals are a pretty terrible combination, generally speaking.

It was a non fatal shot because he bled to death, so there's a good chance he got shot in the dick.

Lately been digging Ahmad Jamal but will now dedicate some time to Lee Morgan because I'm sure it's something I will enjoy.

And I don't think anyone has mentioned the Hammond B masters such as Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff. Whole lot of funkiness and swing from those guys.

Lee Morgan has dat trumpet, with a style all his own. Most of the best jazz musicians had that 'all their own' thing going on. Speaking of trumpet players, fucking Freddie Hubbard. By far & away one of my favorite jazz tunes of all time:

For fucks sake.. dat drum roll at the end, DAT JOE HENDERSON SOLO A-GODDAMN-GAIN! (see post #123), herbie hancock on the keys. I came so hard I called everyone to tell about it. I came on several post cards and will send them out on Christmas.

Dude, you forgot the guy named after the actual instrument ---- Johnny HAMMOND Smith. You wanna talk funky?!?

Also, shouts out to Shirley Scott, doing her thang.

When I played in Jazz Band in high school, this was my favorite song to play. I always sucked at playing solos, but the song has such a fucking groove its almost impossible to not get sucked into it.

Still, my favorite song from that album is "The Intrepid Fox" - the amount of musical sophistication in this one track blows my mind erry time.

Whenever I get to talking jazz with people (rare) they inevitably ask what instrument I play.

None. :(

That will change, but everyone who asks plays an instrument or played at some point themselves. I'm guessing it was trumpet for you?

The only jazz I listen to post-1970s is Madlib. Well, under one of his MANY pseudonyms, Yesterday's New Quintet:
