So this is a thread of various drugs and their damaging effects on the brain, specifically physical damage because some drugs can worsen or bring up mental problems. Oviously there is information out there to research all this yourself, but this is just a short summary.
Opiates- Opiates are really actually a safe drug when looking at the brain damage. They make your brain less responsive to natural endorphin's which are released during pain or in some cases remarkable life events. Their also very addictive which is why people tend to avoid them all together.
Cocaine- Cocaine effects the dopamine receptors. Damage can occur to the dopamine receptors making them useless making the user depressed. Also addictive.
Meth- Possibly the worst substance you can put up to your brain. Stimulates the production of dopamine 10X the normal amount. Long term users feel very depressed without the drug hence it is also addictive. Brain damage is reversible with lots of time.
MDMA/ecstasy- The most overlooked drug considering the brain. The MA in MDMA stands for methylamphetamine or meth. The MD in MDMA stands for methylenedioxy which effects the serotonin receptors shortening the dendrites. Possibly worse for your brain than meth it causes depression and a large decrease of function in the thalamus and hypothalamus.
Weed- pretty much harmless, brains become less responsive to natural cannabinoids for a short period of time.
Alcohol- swells the brain causing brain damage but not anything major.
Shrooms- Also quite harmless.
LSD- Harmless BUT, can change your personality if you take high doses. Some people just never stop tripping.
Benzos- Some debate and research showing it can damage the cerebral cortex from long term use. Worst withdrawl symptoms when addictive.
Ketamine- Can change your personality but otherwise fairly harmless.
DMT- Naturally made and metabolized in our brains so no brain damage.
