i have been taking adderall (75% dextroamphetamine 25% levoamphetamine) for about a year and a half now. its gotten to the point where a SATISFACTORY dose is 80-100mg, and a dose to feel good is 140-200mg. is there a practical way of reducing my tolerance other than quitting for about a year (my tolerance to adderall drops extremely slowly), taking magnesium supplements (no longer works for me ive done it so often) and taking dextromethorphan (dont want to take this on a regular basis for a number of reasons). so is there anything else i can do to drop my tolerance, even slightly? answers much appreciated

No. Abstinence is the only way.

If there were a wsy to reset our tolerances without stopping use or any other viably quick remedy it would be covered sll over a sitr like this.

Well, you could always dive a little deeper into some harder NMDA antagonists than DXM.

your brain is likely no longer producing (very much) dopamine if youve been at this for a while. amphetamines cause a major down regulation of dopamine after prolonged abuse. this means your brain will produce alot less dopamine, and allow less into your brain take a break and try to eat healthy/ exercise. ghb has been shown to stimulate dopamine production i think.

interesting. yeah, i surmised as much. i kinda started noticing that it doesnt much matter what it is, if it acts on dopamine, it doesnt really get me that high anymore. opiates (to which i have little-no tolerance), weed (yes, part of its action is through dopamine, though indirectly), ecstasy, etc. none really work that well anymore.

its been about 1.5 years. i actually do have ADHD, and pretty bad, but i build tolerance like a mofo (even taking it as prescribed, which i did for the first year). after the first year tolerance got to the point where i had to push the dose higher, and my tolerance has built exponentially since then.

any idea how long to wait before my dopamine levels are at or near baseline? thanks in advance

if its been a long term (a)buse then it will take a very long time before you are normal. theres no set time but id say at least a year before you are mostly at a normal level.

about a year taken as prescribed, then a half a year of abuse. yeah i thought as much, shame it will probably take so long.

General rule of thumb for tolerance with most substances to return to a fairly normal level is a total uninterrupted break of about 1/2 - 3/4 the length of use. So in your case 9 months - 1 year and change. Primarily you need to ask yourself if this is realistic for you. The likely answer is no unfortunately.

More comfortably you can taper down more slowly, though this will still leave you with a rather high tolerance. Take it as a lesson as to why medications are best not abused, one most of us around here have had to learn the hard way. Even if you were to totally stop use for around a year, is it really a cycle that would be worth repeating?

Sadly there are no easy answers. I wish you the best with recovery whatever way you choose to go about it. <3 We have an excellent recovery support section on the forums, and if you flat out need someone to talk to, I'm only a PM away, or my AIM is also listed.
