Sativas of Old vs. Modern Hybrids

Interesting, freehugs. Hadn't heard that before. Will have to check it out.

Vaping gives me about the same effect as smoking...maybe a bit more intense. My preferred method is eating it in the form of cannabutter. In fact, I won't smoke at all anymore due to the side effects (dry mouth, palpitations, etc). Seems to be less pronounced when I eat it.

As for growing, that's not an option unfortunately. Living in a small apartment without a medical mj license is pretty limiting. Most of the weed I come across is mid-grade indica-heavy hybrids. Would loooove to try some Durban Poison, Green Crack or other sativa strains from a dispensary! One day...

But yeah, to get back on topic: if there are any elder hippies who smoked the old stuff, I'd love to hear from ya!

Thats a shame. You cant put some on the balcony?

I'm not sure if Jspun is still around but he had pages and pages of old school sativa info. I'm not a hippie but I've smoked sativa in many of the places where its traditionally grown and some seeds from traditional varieties grown elsewhere. Giggly like you're talking about is possible in good company and the mild psychedelic effect definitely happens. I've had it from Swazi, Transkei and Malawi weed, as well as aussie bush strains. The real tripping weed im not too sure about but have heard it mentioned. Personally I would prefer to keep the two separate if I could.

that depends on the temps you vape at. THC vaporizes at a lower temp than many CBDs in cannabis do, so yeah you can effectively use a vape to get a higher amount of THC (thus less sedating high but more mind racing/paranoia IMO). In general people do not like pure THC though, a fine balance with the many other cannabinoids is why people like hybrids so much. I hate smoking very high THC strains, i much prefer smoking shitty hybrids that are low in THC or pure indicas or indica doms, but that's just personal preference. I think northern lights is my favourite of all, just a solid classic.

I actually meant that as a question for Lady Codone and she responded anyway.

But, yes, I have tried vapes are varying temps and find that it has a much different effect on me than smoking, even with high thc/low cbd sativa type strains. An interesting way to do it is to set the vape at a very low temp, say 160C and get almost all thc. You have to take more inhalations to get enough but it is much different. With some low thc/ high cbd strains, this technique may just not give enough thc vapor to be effective but with hybrids its great. That is a big advantage for hybrid if you use a vape. You can change the temp to give exactly what you want. You can save vape-poo from a lower temperature and reuse it later at high temps or in edibles for a mostly cbd buzz.

One of my favorate ways is to vape high cbd strains at a low temp, enough to ge most of the thc out but leave most of the cbd in. Make this into edibles for a highly sedating effect. For some strains, I notice that edibles are less sedating and more clear than smoking. This isn't usually the case but does happen sometimes. For these strains, smoking the vaped might be the most sedating but it would give a harsh, dry smoke.

Lady Codone that is not correct. The evidence suggests that more potent weed today is more common, pushing up 'average' potency, but back in the 70s and 80s you could easily find highly potent sinsemilla weed. It's just the growing techniques with the availability of grow lights etc. and a lesser reliance on imported cannabis that has made more potent weed much more common today.

But the idea that cannabis has been bred to be so much more potent than in the 70s or 80s is a complete myth. People underestimate the accomplishments of old school line breeding. This was done for thousands of years successfully and produced some excellent strains indeed.

By the way strains like skunk #1 or haze strains which are famous for potent high quality bud were around in the 80s if you weren't aware.

But then, surely, nowadays we have more knowledge, more equipment and have had more time to make those strains stronger?

^ There isnt much consistent data about levels of thc over time. I have a link somewhere to a NZ study where they tried to demonstrate higher thc levels due to modern growing methods and strains and there were huge variations between plants. I think they had one or two plants that were off the charts and the rest were about the same as historical thc levels.

I agree that thc levels on average are higher. But not that all weed in general is a lot stronger.

But then, surely, nowadays we have more knowledge, more equipment and have had more time to make those strains stronger?

You don't need any special equipment to breed cannabis above and beyond what would be needed to just grow it. The main requirement is space, not special equipment.

The main thing modern breeding techniques are good at compared to traditional breeding is simply doing it faster. A breeder can bring out a new strain every few years now whereas before it would take much longer.

A lot of bland weed (some dutch hybrids for example) can be quite potent compared to many popular strains we all know and take for granted. What I'm saying is it is not necessarily the potency that makes a strain very popular and so breeders are not solely focused on improving potency as much as possible.

Back in the 70s and 80s high quality hash was far more common than it is now because now many people can only get soap bar if they don't grow or know the right people. Good hash like that is more potent than any bud and so back then they would have had access to some really strong stuff.

I started smoking weed in the summer of 1969. My buddy got some Jamaican from his older brother (talk about a sativa!) & we took 3 cigs from his mom's pack. Rolled the cigs back & forth with thumb & forefinger, loosening up all the tobacco & falls all out with an empty cig & filter. We jammed the Jamaican into the empty cigs, sliced off most of the filter, & went to the park to toke. We had both tried weed before, but it was all dogshit weed. What did we know?
Lit up the Jamaican ciggie & each of us took a hit...coughed like maniacs!...took 2-3 more hits apiece & the next thing we knew, we were laughing our balls off over nothing. Acting like complete n00bs, which we were. We finally got in the car & drove away, but it felt like the car was floating & we were in ITS control!! Afterwards, I knew weed was the drug for me & now just months shy of 44 yrs toking, I'll smoke weed until I die. I only wish this government would realize the opportunities to make $$$ with Legalization & taxation.

EDIT: The Chinese food is here & I'll continue 'part 2' as soon as I get done eating some tasty Chinese food...

Dude, squidhead...that's awesome! Thanks for your input! Can't wait for part II.

My first time getting high sounds a lot like what you described. And then tolerance set in. I'd love to get back that feeling of psychedelic euphoric laughter, but I doubt any strain will bring it back. But still. The sativa headspace is a beautiful place.

Yeah I think a lot of what you're talking about comes from being young and high for the first time. The magic!

Not here to start a debate, just looking for opinions. %)

I know today's weed is more "potent", prettier and more expertly grown than in the '70s and '80s. That's not really up for debate. From my reading, weed of the olden days was more enjoyable, causing uncontrollable laughter, psychedelia and euphoric stimulation. (I assume these were mainly sativa landrace strains).

My main complaint with today's weed is the obsession with smell/taste/appearance, which I could give 2 shits about. It's obviously more convenient to grow hybrids but I can't stand the retarded couchlock feeling and comedown drowsiness of the indicas.

What are your favorite modern sativa strains? If you were a toker in the '70s/'80s, how does that weed compare with today's? In terms of quality, not potency.

You hit the nail on the head, Lady Codone!! Seems like back in the 60s/70s/80s, when we got blasted, we'd get those uncontrollable laughing jags, where you couldn't even look a "straight" person in the face or we'd just end-up laughing in it.
We could put on the headphones, just have the 'black-light' going & be listening to Cream...Emerson, Lake, & Palmer...Jimi, The Doors, Black Sabbath (Paranoid album), all those killer rock albums & with the headphones blaring, these imported sativas would transport us to almost be 'in the music'. Can get super-startled that way.

Well, today's top shelf strains contain more THC than high-grade strains of the past, making them technically more "potent". Some contain over 20% THC which just wasn't seen in the '70s and '80s. But more potent doesn't necessarily equal more fun. That's my main point. And of course there's always been the schwag and mid-grade, but I'm referring to the good stuff.

Back in 1970/71 Chicago, we used to get Michoacán, Oaxacan & of course, the Acapulco Gold. Granted, it wasn't as 'manicured' or well-trimmed, etc...but the weed would have us in stitches for hrs on the weekend nights (still in high school). We'd just cruise our suburbs in the parents' car of 1 of us...toking weed using pipe we'd buy at the hardware store to make our own pipes. The massive hits off 1 of those was enormous!!
But any 'schwag' back then was the 'domestic' weed found growing wildly along RR tracks. I heard they were leftover hemp plants for when hemp was used for clothing, paper, all sorts of shit! But we never did get any lousy weed in Chi-town. Now when we were initially experimenting, yeah, some garbage weed was bought...but we were being ripped-off by older dudes until my pal, his brother's Jamaican & me. From then on, I knew cannabis was the best feeling I ever had.

Thanks so much for your interest. It sounds like we're similar in our weed experiences. I used to laugh until my jaws hurt...then the tolerance set-in...but what's ironic, after about age 45-50 yrs old, REVERSE tolerance takes place. I can't toke as much as I used to, but that's fine by me. I can take 4-5 bonghits in the evening & I'm good until sleep. Problem is = it's not that energetic, laughing a lot, fun high. It's more if the remote control is out of reach, I'll watch what's on!!=D

^Do you still smoke sativa?

I saw some straight acapulco gold seeds available recently and I'm pretty sure oaxacan are around too.

It would be interesting to see if its because the weed is different or its just because we are all ageing. Probably a bit of both. I think I also have reverse tolerance or sensitization to cannabis- whatever you want to call it.

I'd love to smoke a sativa again, but being close to 60 yrs old, it's tough to find cats my age who toke in the area I live. I have to rely on buddies who are growers to help me out with my stash. I also send them money orders occasionally, just to help them out for their troubles.

I have a feeling we're experiencing the 'reverse tolerance' for exactly the reason you stated = getting a LOT older (I never thought I'd see age 30, let alone 60) & maybe it's the same kinda deal as alcoholics. Most people think it takes an alcoholic 3 times as much booze to get to the point of intoxication. Not so...an alcoholic can walk into a bar totally sober, have 2-3 beers & be wasted!! The main difference is he can drink another 23 beers & be the same amount of drunkenness (& booze used to be like a 'hobby' for me. 25+ yrs of daily drinking...most of my pals were alcoholics).
I think it's because the booze doesn't have a chance to get completely out of their system. So a few drinks & they're well on their way to wasted. Could be the same for us who are dealing with reverse tolerance. We have enough THC in our systems that a few bonghits is all that's needed. But then again, what do I know? I'm just guessing...:\

Yes landrace strains and "old school" genetics are still out there. I have acapulco gold as one of the 30 or so strains the the garden this season. I also have colombian gold and landrace afghan kush. Other then that, it's all breeding projects.

Reading your post took me back. I'm 10 years younger but remember the late 70's and early 80's weed. It was mostly a head buzz laughing and lots of energy. Cheap too. Then bout 1984-85 a wave of pot came out of California that to me was too strong. It didn't just get your head high but your whole body. I rarely smoke anymore because I don't care for the intense high with just sitting around. I do miss the old days.

Just traded a pound of shake for like 150+ sativa seeds that a guy has been collecting from mexican bricks for a while. I'm germinating 4 today :)

Oh also, I got 6/6 sprouts for my Malawi Golds :D
This season is gonna be oh so sweet.

The Thai, South American gold, (Panama) red were by far the most pleasurable strains that were widely available in the 70s and to a lesser extent Jamaican and fresh Mexican sativa varieties that werent compacted. Most of the gold and especially the red was an extremely high THC strain. I agree that the influx of N. California strains were not as pleasurable (two thirds of them were Indica dominants) during the mid to late 80s
Alot of people claimed they were "stronger"...they sucked compared to the S. American sativas.

We were getting some pretty good Michoacán in Chicago around 1970. Oaxacan too. Plus the Acapulco Gold. All were fluffy lbs. I started off just buying lids in high school. I soon realized that if I saved-up for a 1/4 lb, I could sell 3-4 lids & keep 1 for free.
Pretty soon, a 1/4 lb wasn't cutting it. Next was a 1/2 lb, then a lb. Just made deliveries on Friday nights borrowing my mom's car. She kinda 'knew' what I was up to, as I always brought the car home with a full tank of gas (a whopping $2.50 then).
My pals were all working as stockboys or busboys & I drove around for a little bit on Fridays. I lucked-out by meeting a guy around 27 when I was 16-17 & he was a wholesaler. Nothing less than a lb, but he was the 1 who suggested that I 'up' my produce, as he'd front to me. 1 thing I made sure...if I said I'd be there Tuesday at 4 p.m., I was 2 minutes early.
The Colombian was more in the 1980s & the Jamaican in the 1960s. Now Thai-Stick was around as well. The small nugs tied to a little stick with hemp-twine. Killer weed.:\
