Opioids Will using OC after WD reset WD??

My friend was addicted to OC for about 3 months 4 years ago.

Now about 2 weeks ago he ran into some OC and alprazolam (xanax). He started using OC recreationally for 1-3 days with 1-2 day break, on which he would take alprazolam. Today was the 5th day since stopping. He had been experiencing mild withdrawl symptoms (insomnia, appetite suppression, mild headaches, mild anxiety, RLS and clammy/tingly hands this morning). Last night was the first drug-free sleep in the 2 weeks. He stupidly used OC again today when he was bored, about the same dose; 75mg over a few hours.

Question is, will this reset his mild withdrawls? They're nothing I can't handle, but the insomnia is the real problem as he has been using alprazolam to combat insomnia and does NOT want to get addicted to that at all. Could there be dependence with alprazolam use after only 2 weeks on/off with .5-2mg when used, usually .5-1mg very rarely 2???

What can I do to relieve these symptoms??

All help appreciated!

If by your friend, you mean yourself right? Don't worry about it, this website's about harm reduction and support so you don't need to feel embarrassed to say you've been addicted.

Since you say you were addicted 4 years ago, there may be a quicker tolerance buildup to the drug. From my experiences with oxycodone (I was addicted for 3 years, I'm clean today) after you've been addicted once, detoxed and became clean and went back for the second round of using oxycodone (essentially relapsing), your tolerance builds up much faster than the first time. It took me around 3 months when I first began using opiates to become locked into the trap of addiction.. i detoxed later and became clean. However, i did relapse a couple months later and this time it only took 2-3 weeks before I was fully addicted again.

To answer your question, no, not immediately. You can use opiates/oxycodone for about 5 days before withdrawal symptoms begin to appear again (I am not suggesting you do this however, as the risk of addiction again is high). Just keep in mind you will get addicted much more rapidly the 2nd time around if you choose to use it again.

As for Xanax, I also had a slight physical dependence to it once (never turned into full blown addiction though)... I'd say if you're going to use it, don't use it any longer than 10-14 days. Anytime after that, dependence will form.. so you could probably get away taking it for 2 weeks if you're concerned about withdrawal symptoms.

I found your thread very helpful. I myself have been on and off oxycodone for 4 years now. I am new to this site so I cant post a new thread. I have been weaning off opiates for 2 weeks. I got myself down to a very low dose. 4 percocet per day from heroine. I got to the run out day of percocet and jumped off the edge to using nothing. I went one day, waited until I was in withdrawal which was slight because of successfully weaning down so much. I had one 8 mg suboxone that a friend gave me. I took 2 mg yesterday at about 6pm. After reading some posts on here I am scared I've driven my tolerance up again. It worked great. Restless legs gone. I feel normal. No cravings. I'm just wondering if I can now use the remaining suboxone I have to slowly wean over the next few days? How strong is suboxone? Can I wean down now in very slow increments so I have no opiates left in my system and avoid the dreaded depression and lingering wd's that last days? n and off for 3 years now.

BOOM! this^ says it all right here.

excellent response. :)

Regardless of whether you(or he, or whomever) actually get physically addicted again, the expectation of w/d's from opiates and probably benzos can manifest those symptoms so...

It really depends on the specific person, their mind, and their individual biochemistry.
