and Bugle Corps. I'm a percussionist and i want to audition for snare in 2014. So do you guys know what to expect and stuff like that?

Edit: Since I just noticed we have two threads on the topic of drumming that haven't produced much discussion so I just merged them and we'll make this the official drumming discussion thread

I don't know what to expect, but good luck on your audition! Band nerds UNITE!

My girlfriend was very into Drum Corps. I believe she was one of the people who handles the sabres. She spoke of a very cliquey atmosphere with lots of gay dudes - but she also enjoyed the structure, made a lot of friends and had fun doing it.

Good luck.

Oh shit, I'm all about some fucking DCI! DCI is such a major thing where I used to go to school at JSU in Alabama where Spirit used to be based out of. I literally know about 100 people from just about every single Corps you could think of. One of my best friends was actually the trumpet soloist and lead player for Cav's 2010-11, so I've watched/listened to so much Cav's over the years.

If you want to audition for Cavaliers you better start practicing right now. For real. Given the fact they are consistently top 5 or so every singly year, you need to understand the gravity of how competitive getting a snare spot is. You literally have to be one of the absolute best in the country to get a call back. I'm not a percussionist so I wouldn't really know what you might have to play for an audition.

Also, they have a very specific and unique marching style that is quite different than that of any other corps. They stay low to the ground with a whole lot of knee bend. Along with the black pants, this helps mask the individual performances and makes everybody look almost perfectly the same. I would definitely start working on that. Again, not being a drummer I don't really know a whole about the differences between marching styles of drummers and other instruments. However, it would give you a head start above everybody else if you came in there already marching like a Cavalier.

I would also definitely talk to some alumni or get in touch with some of the staff. Most people involved in DCI are very cool and helpful to anybody who might want to join up in the future. Well now that I've given my 0.02, just wondering what your favorite Cav's show is?

Sorry for not replying right away guys. My favorite Cavalier show is Mad World. Loved the drum break. I've been practicing quite a lot. I find that taking 20 mg adderall xr really helps. Thanks for the tips! I'm not auditioning until 2014 so i have time to practice

Any Drummers?

Anyone on BL a drummer? I've been drumming for a while now, since I was really young. It'd be nice to get some drum discussions going on!

I recently got into an argument with a good friend of mine, a very talented drummer, about Ringo Starr. Honestly, I never thought he was that great of a drummer. He's not bad, he did his job, just wasn't necessarily that GOOD either... Any thoughts from anyone?

keep drumming and keep drugging %)

damn looks like there's not that many drummers on here...

Anyone have some cool drum set pictures? haha

He's no Travis Barker that's for sure.

How many drummers does it take to change a light bulb?

Three.

One to screw it in and two more to talk about how Neil Peart would have done it better.

*rimshot*

I think on Ringo as a drummer as it gets tossed around a lot as a weird thing that a lot of people think the same way. Technical drumming vs. "the feel"
As a drummer I like Ringo. I don't think he's doing anything difficult. But I don't think a technical drummer would make any sense with the Beatles.

As a musician and as a drummer, even on the professional level I bet, or rather as a producer if you asked your drummer and the studio engineer to make that Abbey Road drum sound they couldn't do it. Most amateur drummers couldn't drum like him. They're too busy trying to get down speed on a double kick setup. Most pro drummers would have a hard time as well, because if you played it note wise it would probably suck.

I like Ringo because he's obviously a cool cat. The last thing I would want in my band is a drummer who's got that weird nerd Peart vibe. I don't want a drummer thats stressed.

favorite drummer is a toss up between Nicky "Topper" Headon and Jordan Burns, and John Bonham

You're right. A talented, technical drummer would make his presence known by having drum solos and that just doesn't follow the Beatles' style. They're a guitar, melody-driven band that requires just a simple drumbeat. Or a sick drumbeat in the case of Helter Skelter.

Art Blakey needs to be included in this thread. [Also shout out to Jack DeJohnette, too.] But anyway, back to Mr. Jazz Messenger. One of my favorite jazz solos ever @2:57:

Blake Richardson from between the buried and me. Even if you don't like metal any musician will appreciate the talent and creativity that dude has. Id post a vid but it's hard on my phone just YouTube him

Sorry about bumping a three year old since last post thread.. but it's better than starting a new one.

Any funk/latin/rock drummers in here?

My favorite drummers are David Garibaldi (Tower of Power), Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews Band), and Steve Gadd (Steely Dan, among others).

It's been a half year since I've touched my kit (It's stashed at my mom's house on the other side of the state). Going thru some serious drumming withdrawal.

(For anyone that likes playing that Garibaldi 16th note syncopated funk.. Have you seen Jost Nickel on Drumeo?
Got any other suggestions on how to do those hi-hat & snare rhythms?)
