HELP!

Hi All,

I managed to get 10 years clean through 12 fellowships. However, over the past 8 months things changed. I will offer a brief description.

I became very sore around the gum area and was in absolute agony, eventually went to the Dr's and was prescribed a huge box of zapain (30/500) Codeine and Paracetamol, 200 tablets if I remember correctly. Being an addict I ended up taking a few at a time and steadily built up until the box was gone and since then I have been taking approx 300mg of Codeine a day. I work full time so can't just go cold turkey, and find it hard to taper as I always say I'll drop down tomorrow etc etc etc.

What I would like to know if anyone is kind enough to share with me is how long does a codeine withdrawal last? The Codeine I'm taking is standard over the counter stuff (I assume about 10-14 days, not 100% sure though). And also does Loperamide actually work? (although I understand it may for some and might not for others, I'm just after a general consensus). Finally, how much Loperamide should I be taking to avoid the side effects of withdrawals from 300mg codeine a day (I also understand this will be different for many reasons, just after a general consensus, or personal experiences). Or any other good alternatives to help that I can get hold of inn the UK.

I am 5'10" and about 160lbs if that helps.

I am in a desperate state, on the verge of losing my marriage if I dont sort myself out and get back to where I was - so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

BTW - this is my first post, so be gentle!

Thank-you :)

Sorry I'm new to the site. You don't do Lions? What do you do?

I'll go off and read then edit.

Sorry.

Read through it, and I'm not sure what I've done wrong? If you could let me know I'll happily edit my post :)

It won't protect you from anything so just use I.....saying swim or my turtle won't stop shit in court.

As to your post you should experience acute withdrawal for 4-7 days, It won't be very intense in comparison to many other opioids but unpleasant. I would get some immodium for the runs, and if you can swing it clonidine or a benzodiazepine in low doses to help you relax and sleep.....stay hydrated and find something to do to keep your mind off it. Good luck :-)

loperamide (immodium ad) will help, start with about 10mgs and wait about 2 hours. titrate the dose as needed.

kratom is also very helpful if you can gets some, crushed or powdered leaf is the best way to go. start with 4 or 5 grams, then titrate the dose as needed.

as mentioned, codeine is a pretty weak opiate so the withdrawal wont be too bad, but youll still be a bit grumpy for about 4 days. hope this helps, and good luck :)

With such a small habit on a weaker opiate like codeine, the best bet is to just taper down (though it's not necessary. The withdrawal really won't be too severe.) or simply hop off and deal with the minimal discomfort. Expect it to last about 5 days. Most opiate withdrawal cycles peak around day 3, with the major psychical symptoms subsiding by day 5 or 6.

Thanks for the reply. I've managed to source some Kratom - will this not just delay the W/D's? Never used Kratom before so not too clued up about it. Also got plenty of Loperamide to help.

The Kratom is powdered, I'm guessing I can just mix it with a drink and neck it?

Thanks for the replies so far, much appreciated.

Been trying to taper down, but find it so hard. I guess the addict in me makes it all or nothing. Just pleased I managed to keep it to codeine this time as my old pattern would have been to get straight on the H - then a whirlwind into a life of complete chaos.

First codeine WD phase lasts exactly 1 week (with first 3 days being the worst).

Secondary codeine WD phase after that lasts 2 to 3 months, but you'll barely feel that one and it gets better every week. Codeine is a seriously underestimated painkiller. Its addictive and can cause nasty withdrawals for some people

That's seems quite a scientific answer!!

Surely 'phase one' is subjective? Or is there empirical evidence to back the 'exactly one week' statement up?

There is definitely no evidence that the acute withdrawal phase lasts EXACTLY one week in everyone. That is just a rough generalization. Everyone is different. Plus acute withdrawal transitions gradually into post-acute withdrawal. Having 2 totally distinct phases is a little misleading as it's not that black and white. Withdrawal is going to vary depending on your metabolism, your history with opiates, your unique brain and body, how much you were using and for how long, etc.

Well, I suppose you could argue for some it might be different and not last 7 days. But from all the posts I read on this forum and other forums, its almost always 1 week.

And after that the secondary WD period starts, but even that is different for everyone. I dont really get the PAWS thing, I just feel a tiny bit drained and my energy isnt 100%

You tedious pedants are gonna cause the death of us all :p

LOL :) It's not that big of a deal, I only even mentioned it because the OP had asked if there was "empirical evidence to back up the 'exactly one week' statement", so clearly at least one person thought you were being literal when you said exactly one week.

OP - Stay strong and I'm glad you are doing something about this before the situation gets worse/harder. Just try to consider it a bump in the road. You have gone a long time without drugs before and you can do this :)

@ OP

When I was coming off of codeine 3 years ago I successfully used a combo of both loperamide and Bali kratom. Those 2 work very well synergistically.

IIRC I would take about 4mg lope and about 3 grams of Bali every couple of hrs
