what should i expect from marquis test on 4-HO-DET?

does anyone have first hand knowledge of what color marquis would turn in the presence of 4-HO-DET? if not, does anyone have informed speculation?

by first hand knowledge, i mean you've watched the marquis test yourself and you're sure it was 4-HO-DET because you had it GC/MS tested. for the purpose of this question, i'd prefer not to count an untested powder from a previously reliable source as a sure thing.

i've used bluelight and google to search for this info but found nothing. the closest thing i found was this, which is not as specific as i'd like:

(i considered posting this to ADD, but it seemed like it'd be better to post here first and let a mod move it there if they saw fit)

thanks for the links. i actually have the bluelight one bookmarked already. the other one's good too, seems like it includes a few chemicals the first one doesn't.

if i had to put money on it, i'd actually guess that i do have 4-HO-DET. haven't tried it yet, because i hadn't gotten it tested yet, but it did come from a source that provided what was expected in my one other transaction with them (GC/MS verified). figured maybe i'd be willing to trust the combination of that and an as-expected reaction with marquis to be a good enough indicator of authenticity if i got too antsy to wait for official lab results. also, it has that slight brown discoloration that seems to be a thing with the four substituted tryptamine family.

does anyone with a chemistry background have an informed guess as to what the color change would be? i would be completely out of my depth reasoning about that.

I'd forget about that.

For example:
4-HO-MiPT shows grey/green in Marquis test
5-MeO-MiPT shows yellow to black in Marquis test
4-HO-DALT shows yellow to white precipitation in Marquis test

So it's not like 4-HO tryptamines consistently give a result in some narrow color range and it is not like the N,N substitution pattern (in this example the MiP part) gives a consistent result either.

Thus, even though there is data on DET itself (yellow to brown with Marquis) I doubt it helps us make an educated guess.
I'd tell you what I would gamble on but it would be worth very little and we have a policy on this forum against speculating on identification.

fair enough.

tangentially related: would anyone expect marquis to go bad if it'd been stored in a cool/dark/dry place for a little over three years?

Depending on how you store your testing supplies (cool, dark, dry place) Marquis reagents can last anywhere from 3-6 months to a year.

I'd purchase a new kit from DanceSafe or EZ Test (Bluelighters get a 20 percent discount if you put BLUELIGHT in the coupon code when ordering).

Good luck & yay for you investing in a testing kit! :)

From an old thread.

Reducing the storage temperature markedly improves shelf life, but even when stored at lower temps, I've not had anything last more than ~ 2 years without the product degrading.

From a different forum.

Yes. Marquis reagent is a mixture of sulfuric acid and formaldehyde and degrades over time but especially if not refrigerated.source (It can become unreliable if the formaldehyde oxidizes to formic acid and finally carbon dioxide - I think.)
