^ Think you and I talked meself into it as I have other reasons for going anyway. And better to find out if there's anything I can do to avoid future bouts too cos that really fukkin hurt for a while there :!

I'm not saying meditation is rubbish.

I'm saying 'mindfulness' is middle-class bs, another way to charge people £30 a session for basic common sense/self-awareness.

Oh I agree with that completely then. Is just the latest fad that's all the rage cos Sam Harris is big on it so is somehow seen as being "special" by folk who generally don't go in for "spiritual stuff" cos he's one of the "Four Horsemen" atheist flagbearers.

But SHM those less travelled/wordly wise may need to be led to common sense & awareness,

But its not the less travelled. Mindfulness is massive in middle-class Stoke Newington. They've all been round the world twice.

In one.

does anyone else have fibromyalgia? apparently the prevalence is about 4% of the population so i dont understand why it isnt talked about more. anyway, i havent actually been diagnosed with it because the doctors are reluctant to do so, but fibromyalgia pretty much exactly describes my symptoms.

mindfulness meditation can be helpful for pain. its not some voodoo bullshit either. look it up.

I've been wondering abour Fibromyalgia a lot for quite a few years.
The thing is, is that the DSM (whatever version I read) diagnosis characteristics are a extremely specific list of where the feelings of pain should be or how they're classed ("Is it a sharp pain, a dull pain etc. etc?)". And they say that it's commonly a comorbid medical disorder that can be coupled with Depression and Anxieties and other mental health problems..... Or vice versa.... Anyway:

I suffer from random pains in many places on my body: Lumber back, shoulder blades, my shoulder joints, wrist joints, knees, finger joints (infact most joints I can think of).
And I've always thoughts that they're either psychosomatic in nature of if Fibromyalgia is the manner in which it could be classified, and classification of such things is difficult in itself, so for a Dr. to actually be 100% able to label what one would be experiencing as FMS is difficult.

So yea... I don't know, but I get a lot of pains in random places and they don't link up to any specific action I've taken (unless I've gone out to a rave and had a massive skank on the dancefloor while fucked out mi face lol =D).

It's a weird one 8(
And typing all that was a fucking brain-hurt this early after not much sleep!

Fibromyalgia can be rough, quite intense levels of pain all over, someone in my family has it and they ache terribly from simple exercise.

Does anyone else find large amounts of caffeine to be incredibly good for pain? Every time I have a few coffees it seems to synergise with the meds I'm on and reduce the pain further. Adding to the fact that it counteracts the drowsiness from the meds too, its the perfect drink/drug to go along with everything.

Dunno about synergising with meds, Inso. Doesn't seem to with me and mine anyway. I did notice that stopping caffeine intake (generally when I run outta coffee and am too skint to re-up for a while) I get the most unbearable headaches. Shockingly bad. Have heard folk mention that caffeine "w/d" gives you headaches and blimey they ain't kidding 8o

In doctor news, seems two docs have left them in the lurch so they're really struggling to deal with appointments and have cancelled advance booking of appointments for the forseeable. Think I might leave it for now as it's not really an emergency or owt and they really were swamped in there. Plus I'd have to phone 'em at 8:30 every morning and try to book one for the same day which is an absolute nightmare at the best of times. Would think twice about using the standard appointment system even if me arm were to actually fall off frankly.

i dont think it makes any difference whether sam harris meditates or whether mindfulness is the 'in thing' or whatever. if clinical studies show that it works then there is something to it.

I'm in for this soon I think. I was only an occasional coffee drinker until about 18 months ago and I've been drinking it morning-night for the past year in ever increasing doses. Its just like any drug addiction, need larger doses to get the same effect. So there's going to be a day eventually where I can't get any for some reason and its not going to be pretty haha

I have misaligned toe joints on both feetand the cold weather is making the arthritis upset :(
Trams ftw

Of course being aware works. Just nobody needs to pay £30 a session for it.

Trams for the very short-term win. Watch out for the inevitble w/d. Makes heroin w/d look like a piece of piss. Up there with methadone w/d in some ways for me. Hellish beyond imagination :|

You too, Inso. Although some degree of magnitude less horrendous than tram w/d. Those headaches are fukkkin insane though. Genuinely agonising. Were for me anyway. Put me right off caffeine. Was when I was drinking endless coffee and taking painkillers with caffeine in together that ended in the ubercrash. And fuck me did it hurt 8o

...they just like to. Along with all those other middle class must haves thingies. (such as the house in stoke newington)

in pain stories my knee is aching. sure i've mentioned this somewhere before. My dog pulled me over 2 years ago flat onto my 2 knees. I was off work and a bit mentally stressed. I kept on walking and walking and walking. I didn't go to the doctor with it thinking it'll get better soon. It does, then it comes back, then it goes, then it comes back. They gave me ibuprofen tablets and gel about 6 months ago. me thinks i will go there this week and say "sort me an x ray please" actually, could I pay for my own x ray and then join the queue for nhs treatment or vice versa? it's just i know i'll have to queue twice, and I only queue for communion, other queues are against my religion

Thanks forthe warning ... I do worry about that but I figure I'll carry on taking 200mg a day until after my double surgery later in theyear.
I'll probably then just find another excuse to take them...:/

^ The one redeeming factor is that there's little or no cravings involved. For me anyway. At that point you're just so glad to be free from them you'll put up with anything. Opioid w/d with added antidep SNRI w/d. Fukk. Who thought that was a good idea? :\

Second failed major surgery.. Gonna need a 3rd. Still crutche. Been medicating my pain lately. Feels like shit. Why me ?

Hmmm not for me, I've been taking them so long. I just get flu like symptoms and kicky legs when I don't take them for a couple of days.
I figure if I ignore it, it'll just go away, no? :o

Oh and people, opiates and anti inflammatory was slow and even halt wound healing. And cigs.

Ha! You are but at the beginning of a long and shitey road if that's as bad as you've had it so far, Grasshopper ;)

Three months of hell to come off that shite. Twice so far. Is no joke. Never again :|

The opioid stuff ("flu" and kicky legs and so forth) is a piece of piss. Coming of the antideps side really, really isn't. That's the real fukker of tram w/d :\

(imo, ime, emi, omg, lsd, etc)

This site has thankfully given me plenty warning about tramadol and not to take it all day for too long, the withdrawals do sound very bad. I've got boxes of the stuff lying around but only take it when I REALLY have to. Does work incredibly well at reducing pain to a bearable level right-fucking-now though when there's a bad flair-up so I always have it close to hand. Only take maybe 5-10 50mg doses a week at the moment so no dangers of withdrawal effects as of yet.

edit: One thing though, no NHS doctor has ever said the slightest mention about watching the level of use. They just say 'take 1-2 3 times daily' with not a word about possible habituation/withdrawal issues. Loads of non-drug-knowledgable people must run into problems unwittingly.

Gotta say the first couple of weeks were hellish for me - restless legs / no sleep / horrible depression, but it didn't last as long as you Shammy - might be that liberal dosage of 5-htp & L-theanine shortened the antideps side for me?

(Was on 300mg/day for several years beforehand)
