Just about to watch The Collection (which is The Collector prt 2).

Really liked the 1st one as a bog standard horror, was fairly original and well orchestrated. Hope this one's on par. Like the lead, Josh Stewart too.

eh, scratch the above, it's shite, and may as well be called Hostel 1,2 or Saw, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc ...

steaming pile of poo. torture porn is nawt big or clevah. The first one weren't bad, but the 2nd one was worthless (turned it off 1/4 way through)

Have heard very mixed reviews of Wreck It Ralph. Is not the kinda thing that I'd generally think once let alone twice about but the videogame hook did intrigue me. Not high on me ToWatch list but maybe if/when I have a nice quiet swirly afternoon in with nowt better to do. I find psyches can make even the shitest of films entertaining sometimes - especially if they look pretty.

Marmz: Will not have it said that Saw is crap. Certainly ended up crap but the first one is a minor masterpiece imo. Gets progressively worse obviously but such is the way with horror franchises as a rule. The first Hostel was also a belter. Second one was unfeasibly crap though I must admit. Am not a fan of bad torture pr0n flicks (ie the vast majority of 'em) but like all sub/genres it has it's genuine classics.

In other film news, all me recently (and not so recently for that matter) acquired viewables are stranded on me deaded lappy. Most annoying. Mostly easily replaced, of course, but that's hardly the point. Need to invest in an external HDD thingy methinks. Not to keep stuff on permanently but more as a temporary housing facility. Me virtual acquisition eyes are bigger than me practical viewing belly by some considerable margin :o

Wreck It Ralph is undoubtedly beautiful to look at and superbly animated, some of the characters from older games have that 8-bit glitchy movement to them which is a clever touch. It's just the story is dire beyond belief. Typical Disney 'kids film by numbers' affair. Such a shame. Saying that the first ten minutes are excellent and really sets you up for something that could have been the next Shrek if they had worked the premise correctly. Once the main story line sets in though it dive bombs, fast. I can't imagine any amount of any drug will stop you from hating it after that first ten minutes have elapsed.

Crappy storyline is where the psyches do their bit when it comes to pretty films, I find. Losing the ability to follow even a simple storyline whilst boosting appreciation of pretty things and making your own entertainment by giggling at an amusingly shaped nose or whatever for half an hour whilst completely losing track of what else is happening is often for the best. Still, not summat that's gonna find itself being acquired as a matter of urgency or owt. Just seemed like a reasonable option when pretty things in motion is all that is required. There's no doubt plenty other better choices out there that would be higher priorities.

Cheers Shambles !

Yeah well I have found this thread very helpful in finding good movies so I'd like to contribute now :) It seems a lot of people on this forum have similar taste to me.

The film, I knew nothing about it just had a gamble on it one boring arvo. It was pretty moving, mainly because of where I was at at that particular time. Very subtle indie film about a guy many months sober after a few years heroin binge. Anyone who has tried to kick a hard drugs habit would relate. Very beautifully filmed.

^^ The Scandanavians do seem to have a knack for making thought-provoking and realistic films so will probably have to look into that one. Hadn't heard of it so thanks for the headsup :)

The film thread here is great. Nice to see so many high-quality film recommendations on all kindsa subjects. Relatively obscure "foreign" and "arty" kinda stuff seems particularly well represented. Good for finding some lesser-known classics too. Have discovered many a gem I doubt I would've done otherwise. Drugs raise yer IQ and bestow superior taste and judgement in all areas whilst eliminating any trace of pretrension in saying so dontcha know. Alternatively I may just have made that up.

Speaking of superior taste and judgement: Discovered that Troma have a Pootoob channel and have uploaded a shitload of films from their back-catalogue. There's a few you have to pay for (I think - or are just otherwise unavailable for some reason - the Toxic Avenger films, for example (the animated series is available and free though)) but the vast majority are free. Some proper classics in there. I <3 Troma <3

Really?
Im probably the biggest Paul Thomas Anderson fan going and I thought it was his poorest movie yet

Not a patch on Sydney or Boogie Nights ( which I truly think is the best movie of the 90's)
Magnolia pisses all over the Master as well IMHO
Then again give me PTA & The Master over any american director working today apart from Todd Solondz or the other Todd ( Haynes)

JMHO of course

PTA is probabaly the best director around, he just needs to find a decent editor to Reign him in a bit as he just tends to get carried away a bit.

If he ever hooked up with a decent editor , we would be talking about the best director since Michael Powell

He has time though to sort that out though with future films

eh, I can't listen to that right now. It's genius territory ... character movie perfection imo ... I love magnolia and boogie nights too (yep and the jesses gurl scene, same as you .. ) ... The Master was something different tho ... possibly a different audience, but it was exceptional nontheless (to me).

'ere .... listen to this if you haven't already heard em ... you've got an ear for a good tune and I'm listening to this atm. Great band. Jack White is just meltworthy

Paul Thomas Anderson gets major points for being one of the very few people who ever pimped this artist

Sean Penn's brother

He also gets major Kudo's for putting the USC Marching band and "Tusk" ( Fleetwood Mac) in the deleted scene of the Boogie Nights region 1 DVD in the drug bust scene

I dont think there is a director that can marry Mood and music with a movie as well as he does.
BTW Sydney is still his opus

The scene with Jon C Reilly trying to light his cigarette at a gas station in Reno is a fucking classic
You can tell PTA worships Robert Altman as the whole scene is a total ripoff of Elliot Gould in "California Split"
The entire movie is a a rip off of "California Split" but a great one at that

No surprise as PTA himself says Robert Altman was his biggest influence when growing up

Scorcese often says he would be nowhere unless he had watched Powell movies

He even admits it
http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2009/may/14/scorsese-michael-powell-red-shoes

He does have brilliant taste in movies, I will give him that
He said "Bottle Rocket" was one of the best movies of the 90's
Could not agree more

http://www.amazon.com/Martin-Scorseses-top-films-90s/lm/2H02HNWYRC0AO

Bottle Rocket was simply awesome and people think Owen Wilson is your typical stoner, but actually one of the most gifted writers in Hollywood ( Royal Tenenbaums is proof)

* Gets off soapbox*
