Clarification of what Thai actually is?

Righto I want to clarify what "Thai" actually is, growing up I was always under the impression that Thai was slang Cannabis Ruderalis. I had a friend at school who for a couple of months was stealing weed from a dealer, it always smelt and was damp, was very dark, didn't smell like weed or taste like it and didn't really get you high unless you smoked almost literally ounces of the stuff. Which was convenient for him since he was stealing ounces of the stuff :). This was literally as I just started smoking weed and we came to the conclusion that this was Thai.

The only other experience with thai I've had was when my friend bought something that was called thai and just flat out did not look like weed and was brown. Again didn't taste like weed. When we rolled like 1-2 grams into a spliff it did get you high though.

Since then I've heard people say they got Thai that tasted spicey and didn't look like weed. This spicey thai made a friend chunder whilst he wasn't particularly high. I've also heard that different potencies of thai when you buy them comes wrapped in different colour strings, red indicating the best and that thai barely has any smell. I've also heard from spicey thai people that they're thai is just as good as normal weed (though I dunnea believe that).

There's a wikipedia page on "thai sticks" which claim to use the most "premium buds". There's also this that even claims that Thai is stronger than most "skunk". (That article incidentally does have red string in the photo)

Basically what da fuck does thai mean where you come from?
 
Used to get oz's/qp's of thai sticks all the time in the 70's The actual plants (an ancient sativa) grow very tall and spindly w/ many branches that bud similar to Jamaican (long branches covered with smaller sized buds) but stronger The real sticks are tied around the super strong branch (stick) w/ a piece of stalk fiber (string) The high is a very strong sativa high that everybody used to love...the resale was about a sawbuck & a half
This Latino buddy that always had lb's of Michoacan was hangin' around with us one day a q.p. came into town, looked at them inquisitively...
and asked "how do you find papers big enough to roll them up" ? we laugh about that till this day - He was serious.
Sometimes we would acquire shipments that were (treated) with opium, those were a real treat

Edit: I remember them being around 5 in. long w/ many long (compact) buds, 5/8 - 3/4 inches in diameter.

That's basically what the wikipedia article said to the point that I'm genuinly curious if you just read it and reposted it... Are you just saying its weed from thailand?

One of the more-encompassing definitions would be that Thai weed is simply weed exported from Thailand, yes. Another would be in regard to the presentation of the bud, twined around a stick looking somewhat reminiscent of a not-so-fluffy cotton candy. A third would be the actual strain (or series of strains) that Fire&Water hinted at in his post from the 60's and 70's.

The one common thing with everyone in britain is they refer to Thai being shit. If you've got thai, it won't be good whatever it is.
 
I posted exactly what I remember...they were very prevalent in the 70's I do remember buying an ounce of thai in the mid-80's
(that wasnt on a stick) and it was the same weed, seedless but the buds werent manicured as much (more leaf) and expensive.

Kind of like the stigma associated with Mexican weed in the US, though time and time again those crafty Mexicans prove that they can get some pretty nice nugs out to the market.

You are quite right I have had many a strain of lovely Mexican sativa's...Moreso when it wasnt compressed
Kind of the opposite of Columbian gold, it could be compacted to the hilt & always be excellent,
 
I've never seen "thai sticks" tied with string, like in your picture link. It was always stalk fiber and the "sticks" were almost always shaped as nice as a small cigar The definition of the high is right on, though.

this^ it can really be any of those.
a friends friend grows some hydro casey jones(my favorite strain) which is a cross of sour dieselXtrainwreckXthai. shit was super sativa
 
Dealer round here had thai once. It was very cheap an oz (like a quarter or what you'd pay in the UK for an oz of high grade) and was a sort of brown colour and in a big compacted block. It didn't really smell of anything but did definitely get us high but it was a strange high and yeah tasted spicey and sort of shitty. If you're skint but are the sort of person who likes to smoke a lot of the time it may be a good option as it does something but I'd far prefer to pay more for nicer strains which haven't been compacted.
 
We don't even use the term 'thai' here when it comes to weed. Basically there's just domestic that was grown outside, domestic that was grown inside and imported shit, either pressed or the equivalent of UK soap bar. The stuff that gets imported isn't exotic at all, it's generally just shittier quality processed weed. 'Thai' is used more by sex tourists as a slang word for pussy than it is by tokers for reefer :)

Therefore thai means pretty much nothing special to me, but if someone were to offer me "thai bud" I would expect it to be an uplifting sativa.
 
I think Ace Seeds have preserved the Thai stick landrace strain. I'd love to try it to see what it's like because I simply didn't exist during its heyday.
 
I have smoked a fair amount of Thai type weed in the past few years and find it to be pretty nice but it does vary from batch to batch. I just assumed that anything labeled Thai is just outdoor grown green from Thailand that are usually processed in big bales, hence the compact/crushed look that a lot of it has.

There are numerous names for it, most famous I guess is Thai Stick, just weed bound around a bamboo stick. The differences I have noticed in batches tends to be the colour and consistency of the weed, i.e is it totally crushed and compact or more bud like.

Bearing in mind I don't smoke really crappy Thai but for the rest of it the high always plays out the same way for me. A fairly strong heady high, able to function and get stuff done, it usually tapers off around the 40 minute mark and leaves you a little lazy but nothing serious.

The smell is always the same for me, very hashy with a little menthol in there. I presume this is just because these plants are grown in the wild with no nutrients as such and are just the local indigenous variety (sativa?).

I know a lot of people who are turning to weed like this for the price and also some people find it a little easier on them than the more premium U.K grown weed. I would say grab a bag if the price is right, just watch out for the occasional seeds ;)

Agreed, and welcome to Bluelight, mobolo (though I get the feeling you've lurked around here for a while...).
 
Thanks Jibult, haha yep I am a long time lurker of forums. Thought I would sign up, have a few questions regarding my own green use that I intend to post up soon.

Oh and on the same subject I recently bought some Chocolate Thai, not sure if that's a strain or just nickname. Either way it was very dark brown and I would have just presumed it to be pretty crap tbh but I was definitely wrong. It had a strong chocolate/coffee taste in my pipe and provided a very nice relaxing sativa high. I found myself packing bowls of it over the Pineapple Express that I had, shame I smoked it all!
