Its not P A's forum. Bluelight have been kind enough to occupy her for a bit.

Mihaietc.. that sounds fascinating. Could you say some more about your epiphany ?

I am dead because I lack desire,
I lack desire because I think I possess.
I think I possess because I do not try to give.
In trying to give, you see that you have nothing;
Seeing that you have nothing, you try to give of yourself;
Trying to give of yourself, you see that you are nothing:
Seeing that you are nothing, you desire to become;
In desiring to become, you begin to live.

-- Rene Daumal

I take it that Raumal was a Zen Buddhist,at least that is what I gather from the wikipedia article. Is Zen Buddhism not also similar to Taoism? Reason I ask is because the quote sounds like Taoism's idea of "do more by doing nothing"

hm. Daumal may be a little Taoist... however, Daumal may be opposed to one fundamental concept from Taoism...

isn't a large concept from Taoism the idea that absolute Truth cannot actually be spoken? "The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao."

i wish i had a copy on hand so i could get the exact quote, but... in the introduction to his book A Night of Serious Drinking, Daumal states that he refuses to believe that any thought or experience cannot be put into words.... its just a matter of finding the right words. i think that Daumal would have believed that the eternal Tao could be spoken.

here's a couple more Daumal quotes:

an excerpt from A Night of Serious Drinking

It was late when we drank. We all thought it was high time to begin. What there had been before, no one could remember. We just said it was already late. To inquire where each of us came from, at what precise point on the globe we were, or if it were really a globe (and in any case it was not a point), and what day of the month of what year, was beyond our powers. You do not ask such questions when you are thirsty.

When you are thirsty, you watch out for any opportunity to drink and merely pretend to take an interest in other things, which is why it is so difficult afterwards to convey exactly what you experienced. It is very tempting, when you talk about the events of the past, to impose clarity and order upon what had neither one nor the other. It is very tempting and very dangerous. That is how you become a philosopher before your time. I shall therefore try to relate what happened, what was said, and what was thought, as it happened. If this at first seems to you to be chaotic and hazy, take heart: subsequently things will be only too orderly, too clear. If the order and clarity of my tale will then have seemed insubstantial, be reassured: I shall end with words of comfort.

We were in thick smoke. The chimney was drawing badly, the green wood fire crackled snappishly, the candles released oily fumes into the air, and the clouds of tobacco smoke hung in bluish banks at face level. Whether we were ten or a thousand, no one knew. What is certain is that we were alone. Which reminds ne, the loud voice coming from behind the firewood, as we called it in our tipplers` tongue, had grown a little louder. Sure enough, it emerged from behind a stack of wood, or perhaps biscuit boxes, it was difficult to tell which for the smoke and our weariness; and it said:

"When alone, thr microbe (I was about to say man) clamors and whimpers for a twin soul to keep it company. If a twin soul comes along, they cannot bear being two and each flares frenziedly to become one with the object of its intestinal gnawings. It loses its senses: one wants to be two; two wants to be one. If the twin soul does not come along, it divides and says to itself, `hello old chap,` throws itself into its arms, reunites itself messily and takes itself for something, if not somebody, special. But you have hust one thing in common, loneliness; that is, all or nothing, it`s up to you."

It was agreed that this was well said, but no one bothered to see who was speaking. There was no thought but for drinking. Thus far, we had only drunk cups of a lousy rotgut which had made us very thirsty.

from Mount Analogue

You cannot stay on the summit forever;
you have to come down again.
So why bother in the first place? Just this:

What is above knows what is below,
but what is below does not know what is above.
One climbs, one sees.
One descends, one sees no longer,
but one has seen!

There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one saw higher up.
When one can no longer see, one can at least still know.

Mount Analogue was a part of Alejandro Jodorowsky's inspiration for the classic psychedelic film The Holy Mountain. Mount Analogue was supposed to be Daumal's magnum opus.... perhaps explaining everything. its worth nothing that (while Daumal may have believed that the eternal Tao could be spoken) Daumal died before he could finish writing Mount Analogue. Mount Analogue, while unfinished, remains a great read.

Yes, I believe that is an exact (or pretty damn close) quote.I wish I had a copy as well to.Those two definatly show more of Daumal and his belief. Seems like something I might actually be into.

However the coolest thing out of that entire post is I had one of those moments where I read exactly something I needed to hear.The Mount Ananlogue section you posted relates exactly in my eyes to addiction.something of which I am beginning to start struggling with again.

Funny how our sub conscious can sometimes seem to speak up so loudly,but never say the slightest whisper. This is what I think they were talking about the Tao may not be spoken because the Taoist is an individual of concious and sub conscious awareness and that is the meaning of the Tao.

truth is stranger then fiction.

some poetry leaves much to the imagination, to find find for ones self what is real for them.

The wind stops, earth is fragrant with fallen petals.
At the end of the day I am weary to tend my hair;
Things remain, but he is not, and all is nothing.
I try to speak but the tears will flow.

I hear it said that at the Twin Brook the Spring is still
fair,
And I, too, long to float in a light boat.
Only I fear the 'locust boat' at the Twin Brook,
Cannot move with a freight
Of so much grief.

yay ^.^ Got a copy of The Tao today ^.^ Gonna read some of it tonight which shouldnt be to hard with adderall in my system X.xBut idk it feels like I am supposed to read it,that things and people in my life are saying things that relate to me about things I am thinking and going through right now.It feels as if the woodwork of my life is getting ready to shift,anyone else experience things like this or can tell when something like this is happening to them? I plan on writing a blog on the conclusions I come to,so when I finish I will post the link for those interested.

How low of an albedo must something have before we call it "black"? How long must something be before we call it "big"?

The third dimension of the object I am seeking to learn more about, well I can figure that out my own, from it's cylindrical shape and the karyotype of whom it is attached to, or even if that person has a name like "Tyrone", "Darnell" or "Xavier".

Who can guess what objects propertie's I am inquiring about?

Something there is, whose veiled creation was
Before the earth or sky began to be;
So silent, so aloof and so alone,
It changes not, nor fails, but touches all:
Conceive it as the mother of the world.

I do not know its name:
A name for it is "Way";
Pressed for designation,
I call it Great.
Great means outgoing,
Outgoing, far-reaching,
Far-reaching, return.

The Way is great,
The sky is great,
The earth is great,
The king also is great.
Within the realm
These four are great;
The king but stands
For one of them.

Man conforms to the earth;
The earth conforms to the sky;
The sky conforms to the Way;
The Way conforms to its own nature.
