Acquired that recently after seeing Mark Kermode interview William Friedkin about it. Sounds good but not gotten around to it yet. Very hit and miss is Friedkin. Made some straight up classics... and some truly dire stuff inbetween times. Apparently this is one of the good 'uns.

Jancrow, I fucking love you! Reminded me of the Kid Unknown track used the I am a nightmare walking sample. Not heard that in 20 bloody years, I used to love that, massive down The Gallery in Leeds '92. Top choonage. :)

Watched Seven Psychopaths and Zero Dark Thirty this week. Both are worth a watch, but not great. Some really good performances in Psychopaths, you'd expect there to be looking at the cast but the script doesn't do them justice. Zero Dark Thirty makes for some uncomfortable viewing, is completely morally ambiguous, and in setting out its premise that intelligence work is 95% boredom sat at a desk it makes for less than exciting viewing. That's probably deliberate, kind of the point but a film is also entertainment. It just wasn't all that entertaining.

Life of Pi is genuinely great, would be a deserved Oscar winner, really enjoyed it. Beautifully shot, a real visual feast in places, the colours particularly seemed really rich, like the film was shot entirely in HDR. It's kind of what I expected them to do with the book, there was no way they could quite capture the depth but still, it was a very good attempt, Ang Lee and David Magee as screenwriter made a much better job of it than I expected.

Top recommend Shambles. Just watched it, a lot of fun indeed! McConaghey is excellent, couldn't be more sinister, Juno Temple properly kooky ( I hate that word, but what else can you call it ). Only seen her in Atonement, first full role I've seen her in, she's really good. Bit of horn you think you shouldn't be really finding horny, it's a bit . . . well . . . exploitative to say the least, and lots of explosive violence. Cool.

Killer Joe. I watched it a coupla weeks back too. It weren't bad. Wasn't it written as a play first, or am I making that up? .. yay or nay, it definitely felt and looked like it was made for the stage

I saw that Kermode interview too, Shammy. I think he was trying to over-intellectualise it when talking with Friedkin, to justify some of the elements he seemed to view as being a bit questionable (the age of the girl, levels of violence etc) ... I think he wanted to hear Friedkin account for some of the inclusions but Friedkin wasn't having any of it.

yay! this makes me very happy.

I hope the rest of you get around to watching it .. I really want to know what you think about it

Crackers, get it watched please. .. I wanna know what you think, considering you were hell bent on writing your own snake scripture last week.

I thought Death Proof was fab. Haven't seen it barring just the once but I remember some of the shots he uses during one of the car crashes were fucking phenomenal. Need to have another watch of it soon I recon

I do believe you are correct on the stage play thing. As for the Friedkin interview, well... it's Mark Kermode so of course he was over-intellectualising - such is his way :D

Plus, I suspect a strong element of fanboy action was also afoot. The Exorcist is famously his favourite film of all time so he's hardly gonna give Friedkin grief and is probably looking for ways to like anything he makes really. Although he did make suitable mockery of some of his ubershite efforts in the voiceover (if not to his face).

As a broad rule I tend to find Kermode to be a pretty reliable critic though. He knows his stuff and has mostly impeccable taste imo.

Also, I fukkin hated Deathproof. Bored the living shit outta me. I was a tad tipsy when I watched Grindhouse though and it was definitely the least enjoyable part of the whole shebang. Have got both seperately too and have been meaning to give it another chance as a standalone film sometime.

Got a chance to go watch Cloud Atlas at a mates tonight, but undecided whether I could sit through the entire 3 hours tonight. Same reason I haven't seen The Hobbit or pretty much any new film in recent months. Might just sit in and watch the second half of The Godfather that I started last night.
