What are you listening to? Shitty lyrics, political overtones & de-policing

I pay money to see someone do it the old way , far more skill n bollox needed. It's not like these days when the DJ has his set list nailed down usually on a USB:|
The art of DJing is to go with the mood of the crowd & you can do that with a flexible set .

You got both of those albums now then? I'll have a hunt for that, he was a bit of a bête noire when I liked harder techno but I'd probably be bang into him now.

Sage Francis - Mermaids Are Seasluts

Massively overextended metaphors ftw =D

NSFW:
I am nothing but a shell of the man I once was
So you can put me to your ear and actually hear yesteryear's ocean
I was in shape then
A much better built body of water with infinite waves and fathomless depths
Where you could have deep sea fishing for compliments
And caught plentiful schools of reassuring comments
Now all you get is the boot

You fell for the bait and got hooked on what you thought I was
Now we're both struggling to win this tug of war of the worlds
Where we breathe the same air, it's just done differently

And I'm tryin to figure out ways to have comfortably survive outside your element
Compromising intelligence
I dabbled in watered down thoughts that filtered in from the main stream

I'm offering mind altering ideas that make the most quiet natured brain scream
from exposure to the types of things that won't necessarily make you happier
They'll just give you a greater range of emotions

And I can feel myself getting lured into deeper oceans of fantasy land
Where people think they're as safe as cartoons simply because they speak in bubbles

A sanitized safe-haven where you could face Satan and have his faith straightened
His new goal would be to dethrone Poseidon and have Neptune's place taken
They'd swashbuckle with their pitchforks
While Lucifer shit talks and rips forts of coral reef
For relief they be like "bitch walk"

From this oversized aquarium that daddy kept cleanly to unhealthy degrees
Writing suicide notes with invisible ink on transparences
And posting them to the glass boundaries that surround the seas of change

Strangely enough, while bringing back the real
I could sense intense resistance so I had no other choice but to cut the line
I'm not saying you're overly naive
I just think you should get into the habit of checking to see when strings are attached
Fortunate for you I'm compassionate enough to throw back what I catch
If it's underdeveloped and needs time to grow
Though I'm remorseful of the pain I've caused you
And I want to kiss your lips better

I sympathize with the sorrow by stroking the scar
of my own traumatic experience with my excommunicated tongue
Say I know exactly what you mean when you say it hurts too much to talk
I've been there; I don't plan on returning cause no matter how much distance I kept or how long I waited for my wounds to heal
They'd re-open with the slightest flashback
So I sued time for malpractice
That bastard's a hack with a rusty scalpel and barbed-wire stitch thread
Instead of seeing things clearly, they're pitch red
And there's this glitch in my head that's got me thinking contradictions, it said:

"There are more fish in the sea
Whether you hear me not or you listen to me
Whether you listen to me or hear me not
There are more microorganisms in my teardrop"

But fear not, I'd never sink as low as to make my ears pop
And I imagine now you only want to swim with members of your own league
And you don't need me meddling, sending sonar signals
High pitched notes are symbols, my voice has grown far
But ripples are only caused when you cast stones
But you shouldn't throw rocks if you live in fragile fairytales

I love a bit of SF!

especially I Apologise

although the hi hats have not come out of the encoder nicely in that upload...

and this early Buck 65 tune, Untitled

"ready for whatever sea creatures may abound / when the water swallows me and not the other way around" (lots of the lyrics in this one make my hair stand up)

The Offspring - Hypodermic

Spent last Friday out of my mind on lots of ketamine and some 4-aco-dmt traveling through space with lots of acid techno and The Offspring. Been playing them non stop since, love all their old more punk stuff but what the fuck happened a few years on. Had a song for every moment of that trip and at the time what felt like whatever moment whatsoever.

I like Sage Francis but i prefer

G rap last verse is one of the hardest i've heard
r

This is good too. Sage Francis seems more philosophical in his lyrics than Kool G Rap though (based on that song which is a narrative of life in the ghetto).

Am very fond of all that Sage Francis, Aesop Rock, CLOUDded, etc, stuff. Can't beat quality lyrics and lushy beats <3

Aesop Rock - Close to Insanity

Slow starter that builds close to perfection <3

Gonna check out some of the above flurry of recommendations next. Never really gotten around to acquiring an extensive collection of such stuff. Is often a problem when you have such <3 for so many tunes - trying to find time to actually testdrive all the albums involved fully :\

It's more than just a a narrative of life in the ghetto

Thats bringing it down to its lowest . It's all about Fukin Metaphore n shit
It is in fact a genre of Music known as Mafiaso Rap . G Rap was the pioneer & others like Raekwon copied the Mafiaso style

Mafiaso Rap basically = Gangsta rap, right?

Straight Outta Compton and all that?

Ok I wiki'd Mafiaso Rap

Mafioso rap is a hardcore hip hop sub-genre founded by Kool G Rap in the late 1980s. It is the pseudo-Mafia extension of East Coast hardcore rap, and is considered the counterpart of West Coast G-Funk rap. Mafioso rap is characterized by lavish, self-indulgent, and luxurious subject matter, with many references to famous mobsters, organized crime, materialism, drugs, and expensive champagne. Though the genre died down for several years, it re-emerged in 1995 when Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon released his critically acclaimed solo album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.... 1995 also saw the release of Doe or Die by Nas' protégé AZ. These two albums brought the genre to mainstream recognition, and inspired other East Coast artists, such as Nas, Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z, to adopt the same themes as well with their albums It Was Written, Life After Death and Reasonable Doubt. Though Mafioso rap declined in the mainstream by the late 1990s, it has seen somewhat of a revival in more recent years with Ghostface Killah's Fishscale, Jay-Z's American Gangster, and Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II. Similarly, in recent years, many rappers, such as T.I., Fabolous, Jadakiss, Jim Jones, and Cassidy have maintained popularity with lyrics about self-centered urban criminal lifestyles or "hustling".

I think get what it is now, but why is it only an East Coast thing? Could NWA never make mafiaso rap if they're West Coast, even if they had rapped about 'lavish, self-indulgent, and luxurious subject matter, with many references to famous mobsters, organized crime, materialism, drugs, and expensive champagne'?

Did the West Coast end up with the same genre but called something different due to not having affiliation with the East Coast?

Liking that Buck 65 track a lot, Jan. Never heard of them. Will add to my neverending list of Stuff I Must Listen To Properly At Some Point.

Kool G track up next. Am not going near a debate about what genre individual tunes and artists ostensibly belong to cos I can never keep up with 'em and - frankly - couldn't give even half a toss what any given tune is classified under as long as it's a quality tune.

In the meantime, forgot to add Saul Williams to me list of favoured "alternative" hiphop (not that I like that term either but there's definitely a difference between many of the above and other forms of hiphop - not better necessarily but definitely different).

DJ Krust & Saul Williams - Coded Language

The divine Mr Williams was brought to me originally by the letters N, I and N and the number 2006...
