Watched Footnote last night:

It's about a father and son who are both professors of Talmudic studies (the Talmud is a text of Rabbinic Judaism (I had to look it up), and yes this film is in Hebrew so you'll need subtitles). The son has been chosen to receive a prestigious award for his scholarship, but a bureaucratic blunder leads the father - who's been (unfairly, in his view) overlooked for years - to believe the prize is going to him.

That might sound dull but it's not, it's fast-paced, funny and engaging and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! :)
 
Really loved Tyrannosaur recently. Looks quite unpromising perhaps from the IMDB synopsis being primarily about the developing relationship between a disturbed and violent drunk and the manager of a charity shop who takes pity on him as her Christian duty but a great British film filmed mostly around Leeds, locations will look very familiar to anyone knows the Seacroft / Harehills / Cross Gates areas east of the city. Superb, completely believable performances from Peter Mullan, Olivia Colman in the two lead roles and Eddie Marsan as the despicable little shit of a husband plays a role in driving them together. Very dark, very bleak, very violent, shock ending. Highly recommend.

In a completely different vein altogether God Bless America is funny as fuck. Rarely seen a film so scathing and contemptuous of the shallow, celebrity obsessed, materialistic and utterly vacuous pop culture of the U.S. in particular here but the critique applies just as equally to the U.K. ( 'cept we have fewer guns and serial murderers, obviously! ) and probably most other western nations infected by Hollywoodisation and its homogenising cultural exports. Joel Murray is perfect as a man desperately trying to retain his humanity and dignity when all around seem determined to strip him of it, and seem not to even understand where his anger comes from, Tara Lynne Barr one to watch, delightfully kooky here. Kind of reboot of Natural Born Killers which works much better IMO, with real belly laughs aplenty.

Saw the butterfly effect a few years ago and though it was a great film, has anyone seen the sequel? Is it worth a watch?
 
Nah only seen the first, good film if i recall, might watch it again sometime

It's marmite I reckon...I loved it, better-half hated it. If you like a typical linear storyline - you'll probably hate it. But if you liked Aronofsky's Fountain, you'll almost certainly like it.

Although I was slightly spangled at the time, and I'm planning on watching again. Reading the book now.

So did you watch this, Marmz? I read a review on IMDB which says "Don't try to understand it, just let yourself go and you'll find you understood what it was all about.", this puts me off it from the start :\
 
I didn't cause my copy was a bit annoying soundwise.

But that quote does the opposite for me and makes me want to watch it more. I LOVE movies like that. Much prefer them. They function more on generating a narrative through evoking an emotional response to explain intent, rather than prescriptive linear action (like Mela just spoke about) .. The best type of stories are always written that way imo ...

I usually end up loving the kind of movie that doesn't have a clear ending and leaves it open to interpretation too ...

remember I kinda liked Tree of Life or whatever it was called, I think you hated it if I remember right? It wasn't perfect but I like how that kind of movie flows.

lol, indeed, I'll give it a miss then! I think sequential narratives can generate emotion too, though, and they can also have room for interpretation, but I definitely prefer the good old "start, middle, end" we were taught in primary school ;)
 
Agreed, its shit. overrated and disappointing like that batman film. although not quite as bad
 
hah! I thought the Batman one was better altho that still wasn't up to standard. But I kinda like the Batman film franchise ... it's normally better for characterisation and depth imo. Still way off perfect filmwise tho

Charlie Brooker also mentioned the Batman flick in his annual NY Wipe show * ... and complained about the film generally and that Bane's voice was inaudible, which I wholeheartedly agreed with. I saw that at the cinema too and it was fucking annoying not being able to follow the dialogue.

Lack of voice clarity in quite a few movies I've been to see this year has been a recurring problem. Very annoying

Same i like the batman film franchise, well most of it,

Watching the charlie brooker thing you said about, love it =D, 20 mins in. hes so good at ripping the fuck out of everything, seen some stuff by him before but not very much

I watched the new 'The Sweeney' film on DVD today.
I thought it was a pretty good film Ray Winstone was brilliant as always and young Plan B is turning out to be a good actor also.
If you haven't seen 'Ill Manors' yet then I recommend watching that also.
Plan B is in Ill Manors also and its a very gritty depressing film set in London, well worth a look at.
