Not sure where this should go, if anywhere. But the people here seem to have the best advice I ever come across.

I've been smoking cigarettes since I was 15, I'm now 18 as of a couple months ago. I've never been a heavy smoker, and generally on and off. I've noticed many of friends now consume nearly a pack a day, and have been smoking as long or a shorter time. But my use has stayed relatively casual.

I've had periods where I smoke more excessively, like a pack in 3 days. Or a pack might last 2 weeks. Or I might stop for 2 weeks.

I worried about turning 18 as I knew that now I would be able to buy the packs myself, rather than have a friend or someone who could do it. Being more accessible, I thought this might push me over the edge into the full-on addiction of a pack a day.

Not exactly. It's true, I buy a pack like once a week now, usually on a friday when I'm out drinking or just simply out and about in the evening/night with friends that do and do not also smoke.

I noticed a buddy of mine who only began smoking 6 months ago (partly through me) smokes nearly a pack a day.

Right now I'm on vacation, and my family does not know and would not want me smoking cigarettes and I haven't had one for 5 days now, don't really want one. I mean if I really think about it it sounds nice, but I forget about it quickly.

It's been like this for 3 years now. Shouldn't I be fully addicted by now? Is this my chance to call it quits? I can't imagine never smoking again, and many of my friends wonder how I'm not as addicted as them yet, as they're all smoking so much more than I am. Situations where I'm drinking or on any sort of stimulant I crave much more, whereas if I'm stoned or on a psych a cigarette sounds very distasteful and unappealing. I've had many experiences on psychedelics where the psych tells me I should stop smoking, and I usually do for a month. But just start again eventually, in this semi-smoker habit of mine. I have some friends who are sort of "social smokers" who smoke when they're drunk, but don't smoke nearly as much as I do.

What's going on? Any advice?

cigarettes have no redeeming qualities. With any substance, you weigh the risks against the rewards. What are the rewards of cigarette smoking? The risks and costs are well known. Most people who smoke actually spend an alarming percentage of their income on cigarettes and for what, to destroy your body prematurely? I know, you gotta die of something right? There are much better ways. Smoking cigarettes is a stupid human trick that you should unlearn now.

^ great response.

Yeah cigarettes are nasty.. quitting was one of the best things I've ever done.. If you want to continue getting that nicotine fix, switch to E-cigs. Much safer and you can smoke inside. The Njoy King e-cig is probably one of the most realistic e-cigs out there. It even feels like one in your hand with the squishy filter and everything. It's specifically marketed for active smokers.. no weird flavors or anything, just as realistic as possible. You can get one at most connivence stores these days or order online. Lots of other good brands out there too.

Cigarette smoking - you hear good/bad reports about most common recreational drugs around
But try talking to someone who's been thoroughly addicted to smoking tobacco for years and see whether they say 'well... there's pros and cons... etc' or whether they just look at you with that disappointed despairing look that says - 'no, i wish id never started.' Indeed the redeeming qualities of cigarette smoking are few and far between..
And it's true what you've read ^^ e-cigs are excellent :)

omg... yes... of all the shit i do, smoking is by far the worst.. i only smoke on the weekends when i roll and to be honest i hate that i do it... (during the week when im sober i actually hate smoking)...

Being dependent on opiates, cigarette addiction on top is absolutely the WORST. When I'm high, I can run through a pack in a few hours. When I'm in WD, cigarette smoking actually will cause me to puke, yet I want one because I'm addicted. So that little roller coaster ride on top of the opiate ride I'm on is very much obnoxious. I WISH I had the willpower to quit. I've smoked heavily for 7 years and I don't see it improving any time soon.

Don't pick up another cig. Ever again. It'll be the best thing you could ever do for your young self.

Hm, thanks guys. All of this makes sense, and I'm starting to think about how much I've spent on cigarettes over the years and its appalling. I mean some say everyone needs some sort of outlet that you spend a little on, like cigarettes. But I can't think of something that fits the same place, I could start spending what I did on cigarettes on weed, but as much as I love smoking weed it does make me lazy, unmotivated, and I sleep an unnecessary amount. It's like cigarettes are a quick social buzz that doesn't hinder or effect any other part of my day. Suggestions?

I think I'll make it my new years resolution to quit entirely. I'll be in college next year and can't imagine I"ll have the cash for it.

Cigars are a great compromise; a stick or two a week at choice moments gives you a chance to still get your tobacco on, without the endless assault on your lungs & pocketbook.

I was the same way as you when i was your age. I smoked, but usually only 1-2 a day and some days none at all. I rarely bought packs and when i did they usually lasted at least a week. However, I eventually started buying packs more and more often, partly because I liked smoking when i was high.

I'm now completely addicted to cigarettes. I buy a pack usually every other day, sometimes more, sometimes less, but i always smoke at least 5 cigarettes a day, probably on average like 10.

Anyway, my point is if you keep smoking you very well could end up hooked on nicotine as i ended up. I'd say don't buy cigarettes often and only smoke when you are drinking or something.

Thats is my train of thought right now, but I feel that's my partial-addiction lobbying for more time to fully addict me...

I only buy a pack if I:

A.) Know I will be drinking, even a little bit makes me CRAVE
B.) Going out for the night in general if I don't have any left at all, show/event/party/etc.
C.) Know I will be working a long shift, but usually have some left from the other two situations

So between all that, I probably buy a pack every Friday night.

But like a lot of you say, that's a slippery slope and I won't start smoking less that way and more if anything...

It's just damn, if I'm drunk or up on ANYTHING at all, cigarettes are a must. But I've been on vacation, sober for 6 days now and it's barely crossed my mind (other than finally making a thread about this).

I can't imagine drinking, and not having a cigarette, I wouldn't know what to do with myself.

I don't feel like any alternative to cigarettes in the tobacco department is really gonna work... This seems like a cold turkey is the only way sort of situation.

I could probably google it, but in what ways are E-cigs better for you? I thought nicotene was bad for you in the first place.

As far as I know nicotine itself isnt carcinogenic. I don't think nicotine has very many adverse health effects at all. The e-cigarettes don't contain the thousands of chemicals that are present in regular cigarettes, and undoubtedly a hell of a lot safer that regular cigs. The adverse health effects from them are minimal if existent at all.

They definitely would be a good alternative, I've been thinking of getting one myself lately as well.

It's really fully your choice. I don't think this is your like one chance to quit or anything like that, it's more about if you want to smoke in general. On an average day I generally smoke 1-2, however if I'm rolling or tripping hard some weekend I'll generally go through it in 2 days. But I keep that same pace and haven't smoked any more than when I really started.
