CE&P social thread: why do the people I disagree with hate freedom so much?

okay i don't wanna pretend and google an article or two and create a thread, so will just put it out here...

several times today, i've had thoughts w/ regards to raising children / equality / etc. We talk a lot about the economic status of ppl, like what their parents do or can afford, or the neighborhood they are raised in.
We also talk, in other respects, about the significance of technology upon society and culture, whether it's teh spreading of a justin bieber, or locals in libya or syria being able to show what's happening in their community through the graces of phones+internet connects.
The thoughts i've been having are along the lines that, income be damned, TECHNOLOGY <in this case, internet access and a machine suitable enough to utilize it> is one of the biggest determinants of a person's potential development in this day and age. I think a child is better off with a fucked up household that has a proper PC and broadband, than a child from a 'loving' household that shuns technology.

I should drop the caveat that I've just finished my 2nd can of alcoholic beverage, and may be embarrassed tomorrow to find i've written this post. In my current state of mind, however, i'm throwin out a huge *who's with me??!?*

we won't bump into aliens lol, not in our solar system anyways
/god i fucking HOPE not. would be TERRIBLE terrible news for our species :\

You're almost certainly right...unless they see our fucking death star. LOL

lol they're unlikely to be approaching this from a 'social' perspective haha. there's either reason for species-to-species contact, or resources, or nothing.
/i'm strongly with <what's his name?LULz> in the belief of "the great filter(s)". Finding *nothing* is better for our species than finding species that failed to achieve things such as intergalactic travel. I'm not close to able to explain as well as googling will help ya, but the idea of "great filter" def changed my perspective on wanting to find extraterrestrial species.

you sound like one of them commies who needs the u.s. to use their "the force" on yo ass.

It's satire directed specifically at the ridiculousness of the petitions for states to secede from the nation, and it's a funny one at that. Any dingbat can get 25,000 people who agree with him or her on pretty much any ridiculous topic you can possibly imagine. It doesn't say much.

Many would have us believe that the internet is a horrible addiction and has little to no value.

As someone who has been in school almost their entire life, and done rather well at it for the most part, I can honestly say the internet has taught me more practical knowledge about the world than all my years of schooling. School undoubtedly has value in creating social skills and forcing kids to solve difficult problems that they would probably avoid if they weren't forced to do it, but once someone has basic problem solving and critical thinking skills, the internet is far more valuable as a learning tool IMO, especially after high school when all learning is voluntary.

If I want to know how to do something, I have very little chance of figuring out how to make it happen through traditional schooling. Through an internet search engine however I have all the combined knowledge of the best and brightest minds mankind has to offer at my fingertips 24/7. It has changed what it takes to be intelligent as a human. No longer is it necessary to be able to recall vast amounts of information through our brains alone. In the modern age it is far more efficient and valuable to be able to use the internet to quickly find any information you need.

Its rather remarkable really.

Direct democracy at its finest......

Wouldn't a direct democracy involve some sort of majority vote? Seeing that this is a national petition, depending on the rules of the vote, the petition would need about 150-200 million signatures.

We can do this. We have to take this campaign to the mass media pronto!

a death star is the ideal way to end school bullying once and for all

except for the nerd who posted before me, bash that guy for his milk f'sho
