I just want to relax a little easier, i figure since its like atarax it wont be bad if i took a few bars and took 1 or 2 benadryls right? I was on atarax and took xanax at the same ime and i was ok even at high doses of xanax, woul it be the same with benadryl?

Yes, it should be similar to the atarax, and 1-2 benadryl pills should be fine to combine with the xanax. Just prepare for the increased sedation.

Chasing a high with benzos is a dangerous path though. You can never quite get high enough from them, and the withdrawals from them are horrible. After reading your other thread I highly recommend tapering off of them before it gets any worse.

yah i plan on tapering soon, so say i took 10mg's of xanax like i said in my other thread. it would be ok to take 1 or 2 benadryl's eith that high dose?

Yes. The worst things to combine with benzos are other CNS depressants such as opioids and alcohol. Benadryl is not a CNS depressant so it's not terribly bad to combine with xanax, but don't get carried away with the dosage.

Hi 616,
I take Benadryl with my clonozapam. I am scripted for 4 mg a night. Sometimes I don't bother getting up to get it. I've been really good about making it last from one refill to the next. Some nights I take 8 or 10 mg and two Benadryl. That is a heavy dose and I do NOT recommend it. I've been on clonozapam for a long time, and I was on Xanax for a long time before that. For me, the dosage I just described is only when sleep just will not come. I have worries and problems that can get out of control at night when I lay down in the quiet darkness.

In fact I have had that dose tonight. Sleep still will not come. Hopefully soon. I was tore up on a heavy trip earlier last night though, so I know that's part of the deal right now.

I have not had any negative effects from this dosage but I did not always need so much. It has progressed through time.

Be careful. Be smart about what you take, when you take it, if it interacts with certain foods, etc.

It seems like there are always a hundred new threads asking "Can I take this and that together?" Use your common sense and listen to your intuition. Well... that's what works for me.

am i just going to expirience more sleepiness basicly? I wouldn
t have trouble breathing would I? Im not worried about blacking out or being really sedated in fact i want to be sedated, i just dont want to die or have trouble breathing or something, but like tommyboy said its just like atarax right?

I have not tried atarax. I cannot speak to that.

I have not had my breathing impaired in any way. Benadryl dries my sinuses anyway. I actually breathe better sleeping like that.
Your mileage may vary.

In reasonable doses of each I think the diphenhydramine should just increase the sedation. A drug interaction checker does say it can increase the effects of benzos, but I have not heard of that being to a dangerous level. It's not like mixing benzos and opioids. I haven't personally noticed any respiratory depression from taking diphenhydramine while taking benzos. If you found hydroxyzine (Atarax) fine, then diphenhydramine should be fine too I'd assume.

Also a lot of people don't know this but less is more when it comes to diphenhydramine, you only need to take a low dose (like 25-75mg). Low doses you will get the antihistamine effect, which causes sedation, calmness, and reduce symptoms of allergies etc. Higher doses change the effects, and make it more stimulating (and not in a fun/pleasant way IMO).

I just had to read a whole flyer about hydroxyzine. I had not heard of it before I read the flyer and I don't know anyone who takes it. It is in the top 200 prescribed meds though.

Do you feel side effects from it?

it's what they give you before surgery to calm you down and take away a little bit of the anxiety, so yes I do feel it...kinda sedating

Hi. Atarax and Benadryl belong to the same class of drugs. Atarax is more potent dose per dose. It's a good drug.

Yeah you can take them with some benzos, but don't go overboard. It's a potent sedative nonetheless.

Hydroxyzine is a strong antihistamine. Here it's scheduled, Liste 1 (there are 3 lists). I took 100mg with some opiates, I was high man.

well i think the benadryl are just going to make you go to sleep...is that what you trying to achieve???

I'm just trying to get sedated. I like sleepy drowsy high's and i think with my expirience from atarax benedryl will help with that. Keep in mind it takes 600mg of seroquel and 200mg of trazodone to make me tired

maybe it was my tolerance to the histamine affect? i have a script for sixty 50mg hydroxyzine capsules a month, and after a while they didn't make me sedated that much.

I knew a lady who loved atarax to get a nice sedative buzz. But to me it's no different than vistoril or benedryl. My doctor gave it to me because he did not want me on any type of benzos. That being said, mixing the two should make you sleepy if you have no tolerance to it.

The sedative effects of seroquel don't really increase with the dose, but it is partially an antihistamine like diphenhydramine and atarax, and that's what causes the sedation from it.

i went to drugs.com and looked up sny interactions for atarax and xanax and it said there were no interavtions, but there was a moderate reaction with xanax and benadryl

is that bad? there are three interaxtoins low, midddle and hi....

Are you saying there are 3 listed interactions, or just saying there are 3 interaction levels?

There should be just the one "moderate" interaction. This one:

Moderate: alprazolam ↔ diphenhydramine
Applies to: Xanax (alprazolam), Benadryl (diphenhydramine)
MONITOR: Central nervous system- and/or respiratory-depressant effects may be additively or synergistically increased in patients taking multiple drugs that cause these effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients.

MANAGEMENT: During concomitant use of these drugs, patients should be monitored for potentially excessive or prolonged CNS and respiratory depression. Ambulatory patients should be counseled to avoid hazardous activities requiring mental alertness and motor coordination until they know how these agents affect them, and to notify their physician if they experience excessive or prolonged CNS effects that interfere with their normal activities.

That is just the standard one they have for drugs that cause sedation. I don't know why they don't have one listed for hydroxyzine (Atarax), hydroxyzine is stronger than diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Medicine.net lists one for hydroxyzine:

Hydroxyzine adds to (exaggerates) the sedating effects of alcohol and other drugs that can cause sedation such as the benzodiazepine class of anti-anxiety drugs [for example, diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), clonazepam (Klonopin), alprazolam (Xanax)].

Honestly in my experience taking Benadryl with benzos it will just add to the sedation a bit, I don't think a normal amount of Benadryl is going to be unsafe to take with a non-ridiculous dose of benzos. If you are worried about it try a lower than usual dose of the Xanax.
