I know it was the 10/11 he passed over so it's a little bit early but as the traffic is slow on here I posted it early.

I got turned onto him through a strange old acid freak in my teenage years & read The electric kool aid acid test which was my Bible for several years & still has pride of place on my bookshelf, then worked my way through his other books. For me nothing is better than Kesey's garage sale but thats my view.

May he ride that bus through "heaven" with Neal Cassady at his side & still showing people that Tim Leary was a total jack ass & was so far from the way to deal with acid in the 60's it's a joke people still buy into his ideas.

Fantastic book . Don't think Wolfe wrote better than that.

Totally agree about Learey v Kesey. And always had a soft spot for Cassady.

Have you seen the film they've compiled from all the cine footage from the bus? I haven't, need to get hold of it.

100% agree with your points, a nice post imo.

I have seen small parts of the Merry Prankster film but it was like some crazy cut up film, it just made me confused to the actual point of the film but thats the only thing I have bad to say about the Merry Prankster scene.

IMO their Acid tests were what gave way for early raves etc, I think their party's gave the seed in minds to go onto acid house but thats my view. I know gay's & Donna summer etc are said to be the birth of the rave culture but as much as Donna Summer's I feel love gave birth to house the whole rave idea in my view was born at the acid tests.

I was 16 or 17 & it made such a huge impact on my life & views, I gave it to my probation officer to read as we would talk about our favourite books quite often & he came back after reading it & said "Now I see why your like you are" which I had to laugh at.

Agree, but The Right Stuff is a great read if you haven't already...

I'm huge into the 60's in America, particularly the hippies and the music, and Kesey has always popped up in nearly every book..
The Acid Tests, the Dead, the Hells Angels, Leary, Ginsberg - he was the common thread in the whole psychedelic tapestry..

I must read more of his stuff - will check out Garage Sale on farmaz' recommendation

Amen brother!

wtf quoting farmaz? =D

I like your name fixingahole <3, I got hold of Seargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band at the same time as I got hold of The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test, age 19 and I'd taken me first purple oms about 2 months previousl in Istanbul, listened to the tape and read the book while I hitchhiked home to birmingham from turkey...

Both the book and the album mean so much to me.. %) and that trip =D

I can clearly (well, y'know) remember listening to St Pepper on purple ohms too when I was 17

I used to listen to that album on acid all the time, it was my come-up album, best Beatles album by a country mile in my opinion.

What's wrong with Leary by the way? My dad used to have some his books on his book shelf, I read them when I was 14/15, that's what initially triggered my interest in psychedelics.

Tim Leary was a total jack ass & was so far from the way to deal with acid in the 60's it's a joke people still buy into his ideas.

Robert Anton Wilson was quite fond of many of his ideas, let's not forget. Not to mention that he held the guy in high esteem as a person, not least for the way he survived the US government's attempts to break him. RAW acknowledged the publicity-seeking and media whoredom, of course, but he didn't let that prejudice himself against some of Leary's more credible and / or interesting theories.

Of course, some of his ideas on psychedelics were dubious to say the least, and he was prone to spouting foolish tosh at the drop of a hat too, but most of the bitterness and Leary-bashing has its roots in jealousy; disguised as outrage that he was somehow solely responsible for getting LSD banned. People like Owsley, who wasn't exactly low-key either, and revelled in his reputation as much as Leary did. And some of his fellow Pranksters dined out on their own sixties antics and reputation without shame, lest we forget.

Anyway, topic. Sorry. Ken Kesey.

May he continue to rest in peace - a decent guy with a fabulous mind, and he could write too. I'll be sure to get wrecked in his honour.

Just because I buy into 1 persons ideas Samhaingrim does not mean I follow them 100%, there are parts of everything that dont work for me so I leave them. Why follow someone fully like a sheep on that path when you can walk your own path with a bit of help from people that have gone there before.

Agree, he didnt really help things but I found his website as he now does art & makes things I think from glass or clay, I had a small chat with him on email & he seemed a ok guy tbh.

The only thing I like about Leary was his "Matrix" idea that we will be all plugged into computers in the future like jacking your mind right into the Internet, that idea stuck with me but I am a huge fan of Neuromancer so I guess that speaks for my own mind set.

I also like Joseph Goebbels samhaingrim, should I follow every word of his 100% too like your philosophy seems to promote?........

Whooooooaaaah, steady on! :D

All I said was that Leary wasn't the fool you made him out to be. I said nothing about adhering to any 'paths', be it '100%', sheeplike or otherwise.

Ditto.

What 'philosophy' am I 'promoting' anyway? I'd be interested to know. Even more interested as to how you can deduce its existence and its nature from a few posts on an internet forum whose primary focus is HR...

By the way, did you ever talk to Mr Smokes Blunts? Based on that post, you'd have got along well.

Just kidding. ;)

Mr Smokes Blunt was one my favourite posters, shame he's gone.

One thing I completely agree with Leary is the the idea that acid isn't for every brain, there's truth in that statement.

Guess we dont see eye to eye on the way you come across sometimes, I am sorry if it seemed harsh in what I said.

Never spoken or heard of a "Mr smokes blunts" if his pseudonym is anything to go by I am worried what his views were tbh. I am not this idiot you take me for, yes my views may be weird to most but their my views I don't expect anyone to agree with me.

If he was some Nazi, I have to add I don't agree with it at all. Just because I named Gobbels it's got taken out of context like usual. I admire the way he can bend truth & make huge lies that make people do terrible crimes, that power over the mind of a country still shocks me.
