I thought it was some sort of Sherlock Holme's reference lol. I never figured it out either.

Yeah that sprung to mind too. I bumped into some kind of connection with diazepam as well somewhere along the line...not sure that made any sense either but fuckit it was a good name.

Ach I've just watched Gomorra. Bleak as anything. Not even sure if it was that good but it's instigated a heavy case of the downs.

Found it very boring. I'm sure it's a very real portrayal of life there but there were too many story lines going on and a lot of them went nowhere.

@spade, yes, that's about what I got from it too... As in real life not everything ties up neatly but there were four or five strands to it and even if the director's making the point that human activities are ambiguous and open-ended it's a trial staying engaged with it for two and a half hours, especially with that camerawork... I don't need to feel like a fly circling the actors and looking for somewhere to land all the time, and actually being conscious of the camera throughout detracts from the realism.

I still felt for the characters but it's not as good as I'd hoped.

edit: and the statistics at the end felt totally out of keeping with the rest of the film. We only see street level grafters and at best middle management types over the course of the film and then they tack a bunch of stuff about the global reach of the organisation onto the end of it. Fuck em.

Been up since 4 am Friday, worked my shift, drove to Milton Keynes to meet an acquaintance, got stuck in an epic jam. Got home, went back out for a burger king. Then ate 90mgs of midaz with my regular 150mg morphine plug!
Feeling kinda nice, warm, content, all is good with the world, I have a lovely family that for some strange reason love me, and I've got a feeling this weekend isn't going to be quite as bad as I initially thought.

My vision is starting to fuck up so if I type messy you'll know why.

I think the book Gomorra by Saviano has probably been translated into English, if you have the chance, pick it up, it's really really good, there's a lot of detailed info into all those shady dealings, it expands a lot on the "white collar" side of the business not just the street level, the corruption, the fake good industries, the dangerous waste disposal, smuggling, trafficking. Quite a good read.

I thought the film was rubbish to be honest, I read an interview with the director when it was released and he was saying he had tried not to glamourize the lifestyle of the gangsters and his objective was to make something that would be as far as possible from City of God, which is all good but he came off as a bit of a tosser to be honest, when I think an artsist(musician, director, writer) is a twat I can't seem to enjoy their works anymore. That's why I've stopped reading music magazines. It was boring and confused, also couldn't understand jack shit of what they were saying as it was all in dialect.

It was hyped massively before release, called a masterpiece etc, so I went to see it at the cinema and it disappointed massively. A guy I met in Aus told me he knows a lot of the people in the film (they are mostly normal people not actors as far as I remember?) as he grew up there. He was surprised I had seen the fim for some reason.

was to make something that would be as far as possible from City of God, which is all good

Sounds all BAD to me. City of God is one of the best films of the last 10 years, almost perfect.

City of God is probably my favourite film. The comment was that I see nothing wrong in trying not to make the gangsters seem cool. That was the whole pint, he wanted to portray them as the lowlives living in squallor that they are, he just came off as a bit of snobby twat saying it.

City of God is an amazing film, but it's entertainment, the music, the characters, everything. The feeling you get watching it, is "sweet I hope my coke dealer shows up on time". I mean we used to watch that film in uni like literally almost every time we were doing coke, come back from a party, put the film, pass that dvd case around and have a few spliffs. That's exactly what the Gomorra director wanted to avoid. He did manage though, I must say, only watched it once, barely even.

I'm off to see Madagascar 3 tomorro with my boy......... Does that count??

Sounds cool I love animation flicks. By the way last week I made a facebook post with a list of things you can do instead of watching Paranormal Activity 4, after I was brutally subjected to that film my horrible flatmate.

Here' a list of things you can do to pass 90 minutes instead of sitting though Paranormal Activity 4

-Sleep
-Lie in bed acting like you're sleeping
-Try to hit passing traffic with empty beer cans
-Clean your kitchen
-Rearrange your collection of Pokemon cards
-Sit and ponder of ways you could claim benefits and scam the government
-Show your bum to the construction workers downstairs
-Spit at passing police cars
-Watch third division Korean football
-Read guides on how to make money online
-Listen to self-improvement tapes
-Drink heavily and consume random powders you bought online
-Go to the park, there's wi-fi and you can browse Facebook on your phone
-Watch videos on how to make sushi
-Play old emulator games
-Rewatch every episode of Daria
-Download porn and divide it in files according to genre, sub-genre and performers
-Watch Breaking Bad and wish you'd paid attention during Chemistry class in school
-Think of every attractive girl you ever met and look online whether they made any amateur vids, if they did, plan blackmail
-Write an email to your mom and no don't brag about being awesome at beer pong
-Go plant weed at the local park, guerrilla gardening is in fashion this season
-Make troll accounts for your mates on online dating sites
-Click those banners advertising mail order brides, you never know
-Bacon dude, eat bacon
-Go to the local headshop and engage in a in-depth debate with staff and punters on bath salts and their active ingredients
-If you still have any, play with LEGO
-Fingerpaint with Nutella and write "I Love you" on the bathroom mirror

By the way the Pokemon card suggestion was a joke, I don't actually have any, unfortunately I was too old to get into it when it came out.

Yeah I know what you mean.

he wanted to portray them as the lowlives living in squallor that they are,

It's the reality of the types portrayed in City of God too. Even the big drug dealers live in shit houses in the favellas of Rio, made of corrugated iron, run down, the streets are rubbish tips and they can never leave the favella for fear of being shot by the cops or a rival gang despite the drug sales apparently making millions of dollars per month. Shit life really even with all that money, innit? I still <3'ed partying in the favellas though. %)

^ What's the deal with the police and foreigners there? Is it like in Thailand? Do they search people coming out of those areas and then ask for bribes to release them?

Well it's all changed now, whilst I was in Brazil the police and army rolled into most of the gang controlled areas and chased them out and set up base. Before that foreigners didn't get bothered by the drug gangs (bad for business) but the police were known to bribe foreigners. Red Arrow was busted buying weed, arrested and taken for a ride around Rio before being forced to hand over loads of cash as a bribe a few years ago.

Interesting. I've never been to South America, only US and Cuba. Would love to go to Brazil for the World Cup, even though it would be the worst time to visit.

Be fun I'm sure but prices will be crazy, during Carnival they increase massively and even the shittiest hostel dorm becomes £50 a night with a minimum of a week stay. I recommend everyone goes to Carnival once in their life, one of the most fun weeks of my life. Literally non stop, 24/7, partying.

i remember when you were away spadey. there in the heat of south america when it was freezing here. i didn't read any of the thread, too interested in the drought. remember you poking your head in and being non too complimentary about all the smack heads

carnivaaall!

Morning EADD, i'm frozen to the core, must've nodded off last night after taking an oc80. not feeling much so then had a benzo or 3, normally wake up in a comfortable position in my la-z-boy chair when i nod but i musta forgot and its in seat mode instead of recline, my back is killing and my right shoulder hurts to fuck every time i move it! 1st world problem n that..
Turned on the heating and took some painkiller (lol) and hopefully i'll thaw out soon, might watch a few episodes of the wire and try drop off again. My order of random gagets for a tenner from dealextreme arrived yesterday, already making a new order :D

Hows my favorite European drug dicussion board this morning?

Sleeping off a comedown? When iv slept that long i wake up feeling proper fresh :D OVerdue for one myself only had 3-4 hrs sleep a night this week most of it opiate inducted

Oh what!!! How can I be up at this time on a Saturday after eating like a million midaz and drinking my own weight in oramorph?????
I fuckin hate it when that happens, I had a proper midday lie in planned!!!

Well done Pontifex on sticking with those long hard days of withdrawal,no easy thing to do at all.
Its great waking up and not having gear as the first thing on your mind. Good sense of freedom that it gives you.
