A 61-year-old man was shot to death by police while his wife was handcuffed in another room during a drug raid on the wrong house.

Police admitted their mistake, saying faulty information from a drug informant contributed to the death of John Adams Wednesday night. They intended to raid the home next door.

The two officers, 25-year-old Kyle Shedran and 24-year-old Greg Day, were placed on administrative leave with pay.

“They need to get rid of those men, boys with toys,” said Adams’ 70-year-old widow, Loraine.

John Adams was watching television when his wife heard pounding on the door. Police claim they identified themselves and wore police jackets. Loraine Adams said she had no indication the men were police.

“I thought it was a home invasion. I said ‘Baby, get your gun!,” she said, sitting amid friends and relatives gathered at her home to cook and prepare for Sunday’s funeral.

Resident Fired First

Police say her husband fired first with a sawed-off shotgun and they responded. He was shot at least three times and died later at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Loraine Adams said she was handcuffed and thrown to her knees in another room when the shooting began.

“I said, ‘Y’all have got the wrong person, you’ve got the wrong place. What are you looking for?“‘

“We did the best surveillance we could do, and a mistake was made,” Lebanon Police Chief Billy Weeks said. “It’s a very severe mistake, a costly mistake. It makes us look at our own policies and procedures to make sure this never occurs again.” He said, however, the two policemen were not at fault.

It makes us look at our own policies and procedures to make sure this never occurs again.

That's nice, but probably not enough to stop all drug raids all together. Another day, another innocent person murdered by the police. I hope his buck shot made its way into parts of those kindergarten cops.

He already knows that the cops are not to blame, before the investigation!
Wish I knew the results of what I am investigating before going to the trouble!

But, the truth is, he is probably right.
Those two police officers are probably not to blame.
The entire policy of breaking into people's homes with guns if they are believed to have drugs is to blame.

so i guess the question is that if someone is forcing their way into your house do you have a right to defend yourself? no matter who it is? what if the guy would have killed a cop and lived, would he still be at fault? or get away with it like the cops did

I hate opening these threads because I know they serve one major purpose for me (because at this point I know this shit goes on and its pretty consistent, no learning oppurtunity here); IE: depressing the shit out of me.

But I still do. Its like watching a trainwreck in slow motion. You have to peek.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Heartless scum.

And the cops get administrative leave with pay?! :|

They always do. These two little bastards were two years my junior. That blows my mind for some reason I can't even kill a spider, let alone a 70 year old man while I chained his widow to a pipe.

We need a new lenny bruce to talk about all this shit. Where are all the great oratory philosophers with a social conscience? Standup comedy had degraded and everyones spoiled with toys and nonsense and nobody seems to give a fuck.

What about the informant that supplied the faulty information? Does he/she get in trouble?

Situations like this seem to happen quite often. I don't understand how they couldn't attain better intel before raiding the house. I wonder what they were expecting to find? Meth? Pills? If that was the case and they were thinking that drug dealing was going on at the house then I would think surveilling the house for a few days would show what was up.

^Exactly! I saw an episode of Dallas S.W.A.T on TV the other day, they kicked in the wrong side of a duplex! Some non-english speaking Mexicans were in there and a grandmother, los niños, didn't know wtf was going on. It was sad, they gave a statement in spanish that translated that they were happy the police kicked in there door to get the bad guys, even though they were in the adjacent residence... pitiful. The grandma was about 75 and nearly had a heart attack, the children are surely never going to forget the time when they were 4 years old the Dallas S.W.A.T. kicked in their door with flash bang grenades for absolutely no apparent reason. fucking idiots.

So... all it takes it someone saying that my home has drugs, even if it doesn't, and that gives the police probable cause to bust in with guns ablazing?

Disturbing.

I miss the days when warrants required actual evidence. Now they can call in a warrant from the roadside. Fuck.

So much of our tax dollars wasted, and so many lives wasted.

The war on drugs is a complete joke.

I love this "he said... the two police men were not at fault"

Even though its clear they're ego driven fools, they try to save face by pretending it wasn't that bad, and pretty much everyone is just like "mk"

I know this topic was created to inspire debate but let's not forget that an innocent man died.

RIP :(

Just another reason we need to end the domestic WAR on drugs.

You have the right to and should defend yourself with lethal force if necessary to forcible intrusions into your home without a legal warrant. Irregardless of they announce themselves as police with a warrant. Burglar's can knock, announce themselves as police with a search warrant then take advantage of your false sense of security to submitting to such a request. There needs to be a better way to communicate that the raiders are in fact police. If the resident won't open, but is home, tell them to call the local PD, and verify that the police do in fact have a warrant to enter. Or slip a copy under the door, mailtrap, or cut a hole in the door and physically deliver it to the resident if all else fails. A knock and someone yelling police, search warrant is not enough proof they are actually police w/ a warrant.

But some people are unfortunate enough to not even be afforded that, and in those cases, defensive fire against intruders should not be prosecuted. Put camera's on the swat helmets/assault rifles, whatever. Make them accountable.

No-knock/announce raids on the wrong addresses or not should be against the law. Period. Any LEO involved in doing so should be prosecuted the same as any other forcible intrusion onto private property, assuming they are not dealt with by the property owners.

The only way people are going to stop getting killed unnecessary, is for the police to learn the hard way. Meaning taking fire/casualties for not properly/legally conducting search warrant/arrest tactical raids. As far as this "wrong address" shit, thats a load of crap. Its incompetence, and legally inexcusable.

Not that i expect any of these protections from a government slowly slipping into totalitarian/fascism, but a shithawk is a shithawk, no matter how much doubletalk disguises it. The message being sent for a long time has been, "America you are free to do what we tell/allow you to do".

We can only blame ourselves for letting it get so out of hand. We're the German citizens in pre fascist germany rationalizing the slow but persistent degradation of a free society. Shooting police not conducting raids properly/legally isn't the ideal resistance, but what do they expect. Americans (myself included), for the most part just put up with this crap, and its not the war on drugs, its not the evil fascist government, its ourselves for allowing taxation without representation. Allowing unrestrained state sponsored legal force, without oversight. Those who sacrifice liberty for safety deserve/receive neither.
