Misc Desperately need a new antidepressant

Tried that one too, up to 10 mg / day. Not much help.

edit: Just saw my doc, mirtazapine it is. Thanks for the replies, guys. I know I came to the right place.

I am considering going on Mirtazapine as well, but I am not Bipolar, I just don't like the side effect profile of SSRI's/SNRI's, although they work for some people.

Which dosage of Mirtazapine did you go on? I'm thinking if 45mg of mirtaz will be stimulating due to the effect on NE at that dosage (AD dosage), while doses under 30mg are anxiolytic and sedative. Mirtaz loses most its sedative properties at 45mg, as far as I know.

If I were to go on ~7.5mg mirtaz in addition to 2.5mg diazepam/day and 0.25mg clonazepam/day (been on clonazepam a week at 0.5-1mg/day), will it still make me gain weight if I totally abstain from sweets and junk food? I'm thinking it can be an exercise in self control, which can be encouraging and confidence-enhancing if I can stay away from the sweets during super-remeron-munchies, plus it's the one of the only AD's that shows benefit in the first week or so. I just want an AD for a couple of weeks until I get settled in to the semester, then a quick taper off so I don't get dependant.

Thoughts? Is Remeron without any weight gain possible? I know the effect on H1 receptors adds to weight gain, whether you like it or not, but I'm sure the remeron munchies are responsible for most of the weight gain.

I've been on mirtazapine for close to a year. I started out at 15mg and this was too much for me. After 2 days I called my doctor because the next day sedation made me unable to function so I cut my pills in half. I was on 7.5mg for about a week and by the 2-3 week mark I was on 30mg. Now that my body is used to being on 30mg I've taken 7.5 to 45mg to test out the different sedation effect before bed and in all honestly I can fall asleep just as easy on 45mg as I can on the lower doses, maybe even easier. All I know is 45mg has never had me laying in bed for hours, I can't say the same for 15 and 30mg.

I think mirtazapine does something to your metabolism. Before going on it I was a daily pot smoker which caused me to lose weight. I was 125lbs when I went on remeron, I stopped smoking weed for a month and my weight got back up to 150lbs with no change in my eating habits. Now almost a year later my weight is at 135-140 but I'm sure my recreational drug use has played a big part keeping my weight in check.

i've never encountered a drug that made me put on weight like mirtazapine. 15+ kilos in five months is unprecedented for me, no matter how much hash i smoked or beer i drank, my weight gain was usually pretty minimal. i still take it, mainly because it works really well for my insomnia, although it has done fuck all for my anxiety or depression. apart from that though it's pretty bereft of side-effects.

I would definately give mirtazapine a try. I have been on it for about 4 years and it has worjed great for me. IMO the side effect profile of SSRI's are extremely painful and getting off of them is a terrible wd to say the least. Mirtazapine doesnt have any painful side effects and to me they were actually very beneficial because ive always been skinny and had a little insomnia. It just gives you the munchies like smoking a fat blunt of kush and it knocks you on your ass after you take it at night like a heavy dose of benzos. It gave me te weirdest fucking dreams too for the first month like I actually knew I was dreaming while it was going on and every night it was some different bizzare dream. But if your struggling with your weight then it might not be the best option but other than that I dont see why you shouldnt give it a try. SSRI's are nasty drugs IMO and I would rather try a tricyclic antidepressant anyday. But mirtazapine does the job for me, it is considered a tetracyclic antidepressant and more specifically a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic (NaSSA) antidepressant.

Edit: and I started at 30 mg and went to 45 and it was extremely sedating to where I had to sleep until the sedation hangover wore off the next day. Im down to 15 mg a day now and thats the right dose for me. To me mirtazapine blunts your emotions a little bit and mellows you out which is why I am going to try to get off of it. It has changed my personality somewhat; like making me a little too layed back and that the only negative effect I have got from this medication. If you decide to try it I would start at 30 mg and to be honest I wouldnt go to 45. I havent noticed any difference when I went to 15 from 45 other than less sedation. So if I were you I would start at 30 and then see how you are after a month and try and see if you can stabilize at 15. The less you can take the better.

I'm going on 30 mg / night. Hope that works. And FYI, I've bounced around between a number of psychiatrists.

An odd thing my doc mentioned yesterday: he went to a conference and some mythbuster-type guys said that the inverse dose / sedation thing for mirtazapine is actually a myth. I don't know whether to believe that or not. Any thoughts?

I despise any form of amphetamine. I am however not a doctor.

I would recommend suboxone for depression. Ask your pysch doc about suboxone for depression. If he/she wont then claim youre a opiate addict. Opiate do wonders for depression but leave you much worse off once the ride os over. However, suboxone, especially really low dose, will last you forever.

You could try ginger. It has 5-HT partial agonists in it and this serotonergic activity should promote neurogenesis.

i dont care for addictive drugs that don't get me high...Antid's never worked for me so i just self medicate

I wouldn't call antidepressants addictive. Yes there is a need for titration when stopping but they lack addictive properties.

The goal for many people taking antidepressants is not to feel euphoric or altered in anyway, the goal is to feel "normal" or have more contentment in their lives.

I don't think comments like this do any good for the OP. Don't take it personal, I just believe that it doesn't serve a purpose here.

Maybe Tianeptine (SSRE(nhancer)) is an option for you. It seems to like an promising antidepressant.
Low-Dose Amisulpride (lower or equal to 200mg) is also a quite effective antidepressant, which might be stimulating (not for me though). It might also ease the bi-polar..

I was always curious to give Tianeptine a try, but I don't believe I'm able to acquire it in the United States. Am I wrong about this?

I don't know about the US but here in Germany it is also unavailable but if i really want it and my doctor agrees, he can prescribe it and i can get it from anywhere in the EU (France for example). But then it is not covered by our very wealthy and good health insurance and i have to pay it myself 8) ...

What is your diet like? If you have a poor diet your body can not make the proper chemicals to regulate body chemistry.

Think of it like playing with a play dough hamberger set, at first you have a the proper colors to make a correct burger.

After a whole of playing with it, the dough dries up. You lose pieces and have to make a burger with missing parts or green buns instead of brown buns. It works but isn't quite right.

Look into taking vitamins and supplements.

Get a vitamin blood plasm level and see if this can be causing the imbalance.

It may not fix everything but can can help out tremendously with the way you feel and perceive life.

Another option is trying GABA and 5-HTP Suppliments. They work by relieving stress and putting chemicals back into balance. They worked for me. Ask your dr. And if they seem not to know ask a health food store clerk. They usually know about herbs and pharmacology.

I hope you get well better soon and find balance.

Very well said. Vitamin D and B12 are very important for women as well as a balanced diet. Its all about balance. I drink a ton of organic apple and carrot juice for depression and pain and it makes me feel a little better knowing I am caring for myself. There are a ton of herbs out there with amazing powers and I am not pointing towards cannabis, I believe it contributes to depression.

I am not sure if this is mentioned but I was given 18 mg of concerta ER for daily use and it really helped with my mood, energy and motivation.

I hope you feel better.
