'Smoked pot, got caught!' Mom forces her 13-year-old son to carry humiliating sign after she busted him smoking marijuana

A 13-year-old boy learned a lesson in tough love after he was caught smoking pot with his friends. Brandon Mathison was forced to wear a humiliating sign along a busy intersection in Beaufort, South Carolina, after he was busted by his mother, April Mathison, as a punishment. The schoolboy spent his Friday night carrying the placard reading: ‘’Smoked pot, got caught! Don’t I look cool? Not!’

Across his back was another sign, scrawled with the words: ‘Learn from me, don’t do drugs.’
'Time outs and taking things away just doesn't work any more. Sometimes a little public humility is what they need nowadays to get a point across,' April Mathison told WTOC.

Yeah it's interesting that the most conservative British newspaper there is had to get a story out of one of the most hick states in the US in order to back up there retarded position on drugs.

The kid should have changed the sign to "my mom is such a crazy bitch that i have to smoke pot just so i can deal with living with her" :p

Next week in the news "kid that was forced to wear humiliating sign stabs his mom to death after quitting pot" ;)

Just because he smoked pot

A US teen busted for smoking marijuana has been publicly humiliated by his mother who forced him to wear a written confession around his neck next to a busy road.

Brandon Mathison, 13, could be seen at a South Carolina intersection on two separate occasions over the weekend, wearing a bright yellow sign that read: "Smoked pot, got caught! Don't I look cool? Not!" and, "Learn from me, don't do drugs".

His mother, April Mathison, decided on the punishment because she believed nothing else would make him stop.

"Time outs and taking things away just doesn't work anymore. Sometimes, a little public humility is what they need nowadays to get a point across," she told Wave3 News

"I never in a million years pictured my 13-year-old son getting busted for marijuana. I’m always bragging about what a great kid he is."

It seems the punishment had an effect on Brandon, who did not enjoy the attention he was getting.

"All kinds of looks. There are people stopping to talk to me," he said at the time.

"Mostly they are yelling at me to stop."

Ms Mathison said she was encouraged by the amount of positive feedback she received from people driving past.

I never in a million years thought my kid would end up getting busted for smoking weed either. He turned 15 in June and has been sentenced to six months in rehab because he kept testing dirty. Not funny at all man, we had to take him there today. I could have been that mom, but believed he would quit. Now I can't stop crying. I miss him already. He's not a bad kid, just addicted

^ Pot is addictive? I've never found it addictive. Alcohol and tobacco are much more addictive imo. Maybe the social thing or peer pressure part is addictive, but at 15 how addicted could he be?

6 mnths in rehab for smoking weed? wtf. 15 is a bit young i rekon to be smoking weed, but we all experiment at some time.. He kept testing dirty as in? Where at? School? Work?

The boy wouldn't stop smoking weed, knowing the consequences. He repeatedly tested dirty in drug court

I think this is clever, at 13 most kids care alot about thier self-image. I give kudos for the clever punishment.
I don't think kids at 13 should be toking up. In a couple years, with emotional maturity, and good grades as a parent I would consider letting my child smoke if they wanted to.....but 13, no way.

I dunno.
What she did is likely to just make her son hate her, and keep away from her.
She didn't seem to make an effort to understand his position.

Then again, 13 is just too young to be using drugs, so I understand wanting to send a strong message.
I would do something strong if my 13-year-old were smoking weed.
I agree with Steely J on this one.

I'm agreeing that you probably shouldn't be smoking weed at 13 (even if it makes me a hypocrite, doesn't stop it from being true.)

but doing something that extreme to punish a kid? What the fuck happened to taking away allowance/privilegse and stuff? Don't give your money to spend on weed sounds a lot more practical than dressing him up in some home made sign. If my mom did that to me i'd have bailed as soon as I hit 16.
