Hi everyone - need some advice/opinions here...

I was taking oxycodone (IR) for about a year - 30mg 3 times per day. About a month ago I switched to suboxone...8mg at first and I quickly tapered down to 4mg in a month. and was actually taking 2mg every 3rd day. However, I am a chronic pain patient and the 4mg suboxone was not controlling my pain. Doctor switched me to oxycontin 10mg and oxycodone 5mg to take as needed. He told me it was fine to start those about 24 hours after the last suboxone dose. I took the oxycontin about 28 hours after the last sub dose...then an oxycodone 5mg about an hour after...and a 2nd oxy 5mg dose 2 hours after that. Not only was it not doing anything for my pain...but I also felt some withdrawal symptoms. moderate at first...as I took more meds it decreased to mild. woke up this morning...still in severe pain and mild withdrawal. I took oxycontin, then oxycodone 5mg. Its been a few hours and still zero pain relief and I can actually still feel mild withdrawal symptoms.

Will the withdrawal ever stop? will this dose of oxy ever give me pain relief? Any advice would be so wonderful. i plan on speaking to my doctor...but I like hearing real-life feedback from people that have experience. something tells me that with my past oxy use and the 4mg suboxone dose I was on...this dose of oxy is too low now to help? I'm really not interested in going higher in oxy (thats why I got off it in the first place) but the whole reason I switched was due to the pain I'm in daily.

Thanks!

This is really tough. It's hard to get help when people go into junkie-attack-mode and think you're just faking not feeling anything. I dunno what to tell you there, besides try and talk to your doctor - and if he doesn't fix it, find another doctor, and so on. I'm sorry you have to go through that!

I'm a pain patient first...I got dependent on oxy before...but I never really was addicted. It controlled my pain...anytime I felt "good" from it was just an extra but I wasnt really looking for that. I switched to suboxone because I felt taking all that short acting oxy daily to control the pain was not a good route to go...short or long term. so I switched to suboxone...I was told that the suboxone would help me to do that and control the pain. Well the pain control piece wasnt there. So thats the reason for the latest switch back to oxy. I know the doctor doesnt think I'm faking it. if I had my choice, I would have continued to taper off the suboxone and be done with it. But I'm in extreme pain that is disrupting my life daily. But now i'm worried that because of my previous oxy dose + the suboxone...this low dose of oxy (short and long acting) is not enough. Which greatly concerns me because I was apprehensive about taking it to begin with (not wanting to go down that road again) and I really dont wanna increase which I fear he will do. I guess my question is...am I right in that thinking? Do you think eventually this dose will level out and the withdrawal will stop and it will control my pain...or should I take this first day on this dose as gospel and realize that 20-30mg of oxy per day is just not going to control the pain. I really am at a cross right now...I have extreme pain...the suboxone doesnt control it...but I really dont want to be back on a higher dose of oxy.

It took me months to get off of Suboxone and have my receptors be able to handle opiates again.

I went from 24mg to 2mg a day in 6 months and it was terrible. Two months of withdraw then paws.. If you have severe pain then Suboxone was a bad choice because you are not going to have adequate pain relief until the Suboxone is completely gone and it's got a long half life.

Your just gonna have to wait it out until your bak to normal because o suboxones long half life it takes a while.

How long ago didnyou get off of it?

See I trusted the doctor in that suboxone was a fantastic choice for me...strictly because I was told it is a very good pain drug for daily use. damnit!

how long ago did I stop the suboxone? it's been about 2 days. I was only on it for 1 month and for the majority of the time I was on 4mg or less daily. how long until its out of my system? can't be too long can it?

so what do I do in the meantime? continue taking the oxy dose? switch back to suboxone and taper slowly off that so the withdrawal isnt as bad as coming off 4mg?

I would keep on oxy, I ha to use Vic and perc my doc to get off of Suboxone backwards huh.... Anyways it look my two months to feel half way normal and this happens to lots of people.

2-4mg is still a lot of Suboxone, it's a lot stronger on receptors than oxy and ya Suboxone is shit for pain relief IMO... Depends on you really how long it takes but it will definitely be around a week or so until you feel okay... Suboxone and methadone are terrible to come off of unlike short acting opiates those take for ever to recover from.

A lot of doctors are saying its good for pain relief but we know better ya know.....

yea im learning that the hard way. ugh - thanks for the advice. you know I questioned this switch to oxy...wish I listened to my gut.

so you are saying if I continue on the oxy...in about a week I'll feel alright probably...but as far as pain relief...probably not much, if any?

No the oxy will start to work but you will need a higher dose Suboxone makes your tolerance sky rocket. But the switch was a good idea unless the Suboxone was actually helping your pain?

Also would you want to stay on something that has a long Half life and side effects instead of a shorter acting opiate that can do the same thing with less problems to get off of?

the suboxone never helped my pain. after about a week after switching to it...the pain returned and built. the doctor wanted me to increase to 16-20mg per day for pain management...but everything I've read says with suboxone raising the dose high like that does not work for pain. so I didnt and continued to taper down to 4mg.

see thats what I was afraid of...having to increase the oxy dose to get it to work. damn!

with the pain i'm in i'm probably going to be in pain for a long long time. so I gotta plan short, intermediate and long term. thats why I didnt want to be on such a high dose of short acting and made the switch to suboxone to get off it (i'm fairly young...plus I remember I was under the impression that the suboxone would control my pain as I was tapering down...I specifically asked about that). honestly - I dont even know if I have any options now other than being on a high dose or something or being in incredible pain.

if you are still in pain you need to take a higher dose of full on opiates The 4 mg's of bupe' really shouldnt be that much of a concern you are not getting relief You are on too low a dose to control your pain, also I have experienced and read many times of the new formulation OC's not dissolving (getting into you system) before they reach your colon This should be a big concern because a lot of Dr's know about it too.

Hi Fire&Water - I have some experience with this stuff but can you explain that more?

you are saying the new oxy dose im on is too low to do anything for pain?

would a higher dose of suboxone work for pain?

No a higher dose of Suboxone will not work, but due to your Suboxone use you will need a higher dose of oxy.

Yeah, basically this ^^ But the 4 mg's of sub' shouldnt make much of a difference (maybe for the first week) but not neccesarily
I've only used Subutex, so the nalaxone may make some difference in your receptors responding sooner. I think the new formulated OC's are crap for pain, if they work for someone consider yourself lucky - I've heard a Dr. say because of the new formulation you may get 50% of pain control, compared to the old ones...Bottom line if you are in constant pain you need to get back in and talk to your Doctor.

ok thank you for the feedback. thats so horrible that a new formulation would cause that dramatic a decrease. what a way to make people take more drugs! geez! thanks again!

^^ I have read this as well! That new formula had less efficiency... And you need more for it to work. I took it and it helped but not after being on Suboxone. The naloxone def makes a difference subutex was a lot better for me...
