I just read this on another forum and got permission from the author to post it here as an alert:
I recently received a report from a group of pyschonauts of possible-MXE being sold as ketamine in Sydney. I am posting it here for the purpose of harm-reduction:
"We obtained a substance, which was represented as ketamine. No indication was given that it might be another material, just that it was "good/strong". The appearance was a fine white homogeneous powder, which we stupidly assumed to be ground ketamine crystal. After the second experience described below, we tasted it and found it to be only a little bitter, and lacking the slight mouth-numbing effect of K.
The first dosage of this material was at 50-60mg IM (all subjects were of low body weight, 50-60kg, and having no relevant tolerances), administered ~4hrs after a low dosage of psilocybe mushrooms. This produced a moderate psychedelic-dissociative state lasting about 90 minutes. Mild psychedelic effects were experienced for another several hours, but were attributed to the mushroom combination.
About a week later, we decided to try a higher dose on its own, still believing that the substance was ketamine. 120mg was administered IM (it should be noted that the water-solubility of this stuff was quite poor - at the time we assumed some insoluble cut). We expected a strong but short experience, perhaps lasting an hour or two. This was not to be the case.
We had time to turn on the music and lie down before pieces of reality started breaking off. Someone said, "Whoa, I think uh..." and then everything dissolved - reality, self, time and space - all gone, all the same thing. We have little memory of the next 3 or 4 hours, just a series of "snapshots" - single images/concepts/soundbites - probably amounting to a few minutes out of those few hours. Apparently we were responsive, eyes open and capable of moving around a bit, but dialogue was impossible. How do you talk to someone in another dimension? There are far more memories of the experience from around the 4-7 hour range, although still very disjointed. It seemed to differ from K (in respects other than duration), but no one could put their finger on how, exactly. Reports we've read since (of MXE) have people comparing it to "ketamine plus..." all sorts of things - apparently whatever their drug of choice is - LSD, 2CB, various opiates, etc. It was certainly in the same family as ketamine, with strong dissociative effects and anaesthesia, even the "crickets" sound. One person reported more "confusion" than K, forgetting who/where they were, or that they'd taken a drug. The one thing everyone seemed to agree on was that they experienced stronger psychedelic effects than K.
Around the 7 hour mark conversation became possible, although not especially coherent, consisting mainly of people shouting things like "what the fuck just happened?!", "where are my legs?", "did you see that room with all the squares?" and so on. Significant psychedelic and body-effects (numbness, uncoordination) were felt for at least 10 hours after administration. Some confusion, dysphoria and muscle weakness persisted for about 24 hours. One sensitive subject was still hiding under a blanket at 12 hours, reporting typical psychedelic effects (heightened hearing and smell, CEV, some nausea).
We should note that the experience itself wasn't particularly distressing. Mind-blowing certainly, but the only really distressing part was the fact that it lasted 10 times as long as anticipated. Luckily no one had any responsibilities during that time, or at least none that couldn't be postponed, as that could have been a bad situation. All in all, this was an interesting compound, but I think that representing it as ketamine is totally irresponsible. We have tentatively identified it as MXE, based on that compound's recent availability and cheapness, and from comparing our experiences with MXE reports. It's possible that it was some other analogue, but MXE seems most likely."
