I was prescribed antidepressants today, a type of SSRI and took my first dose. Then I remembered I had a big night coming up next week and I'll want to get fucked up (in a good way, I'm not suicidal). I planned to take Tramadol that night but I just learned that SSRIs and Tramadol don't go well together and may cause Serotonin Syndrome. Should I....

...Continue to take the SSRI and risk taking Tramadol (a 200mg dose) that night?

...Stop taking the SSRI and resume taking it after I use the Tramadol?

...Forget about taking the Tramadol altogether? Obviously I don't want to die, but not being able to take drugs will be the death of my social life!

I vote for this one and I can't believe that it will be the end of your social life; if it is, it's on pretty flimsy ground. I stopped taking drugs when I was still very much immersed in a world where everyone used (and some abused) them. I thought it was going to be a big deal and the end of my friendships. That occurred with a few people but for the most part no one cared at all. I still prefer to hang with people that don't stigmatize drug use, but other than that, my good friends range from active addicts to abstainers and everything in between. Since you are newly on the SSRI you should give it a chance to see how it is going to work (or not) without introducing any other drugs. Get your brain clear and focus on the problematic feelings that led to you deciding to try an SSRI in the first place. I think that should be your first priority right now.

You're dead right about that, I don't know why I even entertained the idea of taking the Tramadol. Madness!

Good job class-a-team. Definitely remember why you began taking the SSRI, and focus all your energy on that for the time being.

There will always be many nights out and opportunities to take drugs waiting for you once you've sorted out whatever is going on with you. Seeking help and getting treatment is a step in the right direction - don't do anything to hinder your progress, especially in the early stages. Take your SSRI as prescribed.
