Film Batman: The Dark Knight Rises!

how many stars?

  • Total voters
    25
The Dark Knight was a not too good, but I have faith that Nolan will reel this in and as we look back on it as a trilogy it will hold up. But Batman Begins was still one of the best movies I've ever seen. The 2nd one was slower and the pacing had issues.

the first screening, to about 60 critics, took place today. although they can't post their reviews for another 10 or so days, some tweeted about it. garth, of darkhorizons, reviewed the tweets as: "The new Batman film heals the sick, stops wars and will end famine as we know it."

damn man... damn. I am so excited for this movie to drop! the implication that the Dark Knight Rises could be better than the Dark Knight is something that has just seriously fucked with my perception of reality!

although I think it's a hard-sell saying that a Batman movie + Two-Face and Joker < a Batman movie with Bane and Anne Hathaway as Catwoman... but then again, I am not ashamed to admit that I thought a movie starring Heath "21 Things I Hate About You" Ledger as the Joker, was going to suck!

can Nolan's new Batman film top the Dark Knight??? can it???

some actual tweets excertps quoted in garth's article indicate exactly that, it is the best of the three. it is a risky subject matter, the audience of critics applauded at the end, and there were even mentions of tears being shed.

i can't be more hyped. i watched my two new blurays last night.

Holy hyperbole, Batman!

I resolve myself to remain stoically cynical up until the point I actually see the film - there's nothing more aggravating than getting sucked into the hype only to have the final product not live up to your ludicrous expectations.

Exactly. I think Prometheus was the final nail in the coffin for me. Now I'm just viewing the TDKR hype with a cold, passive curiosity...

first 24 screenings in imax sydney already sold out. that's like a week's worth of screenings.

god dammit Anne Hathaway! did she really release such a huge spoiler on David Letterman? what a fucking idiot. I've always hated her. now, she could be lying about that spoiler that came out of her dumb assed, not deserving of Catwoman mouth of hers, but honestly it made sense as to where Nolan was going (and adding on Gordon-Levitt)

UGH

DON'T READ - David Letterman May Have Spoiled The Dark Knight Rises

my spoiler and suggestion free quick first reaction is 3.75/5 but i won't vote until i see it again in imax in a couple of weeks.

-.25 for trying too much in the story. tdk had too much story too but it was fine because none of it was rushed or not substantially resolved. here there's a rushed rough around some edges here and some things just inexplicably end.
-1 for one pretty big plot hole. thinking about it i can't fill it. i hope i missed something.

otherwise it was brilliant. bane is incredible, but his voice at first sounds like the roger moore james bond if he were a transformer. the hilarity changes quickly to horror as his character develops. catwoman was great too. fantastic story which touches on and completes both of the other films.

Wow. Best movie I've seen all year.

5/5

A great ending to a great trilogy.

@L2R What plot hole? I didn't notice any really but then again I was so swept away by the movie I probably didn't notice.

i think it would have been perfect if split into two movies. there's an incredible segway opportunity right at the middle.

as for the plot hole
where is the prison? how does bruce wayne get back into gotham with no resources and the island completely isolated?

^Oh I see what you mean.

My explanation for that is...

NSFW:
Well the guy is Bruce fucking Wayne. The guy could have found resources. Yes he was broke in that part of the film. But his name probably still carried some weight in all corners of the world. Besides that if you recall in Batman Begins the guy spent many years of his life as a penniless criminal in order to understand the criminal mind. The guy is obviously resourceful enough to survive without money so IMO whatever problem you throw at him he eventually finds a way to solve it. My two cents. Have to see it again though.

Also L2R

What do you think about the introduction of Robin? Joseph Gordan Levitt is an awesome choice IMO and the ending left it open for movies with him carrying on Batman's legacy. Could be cool IMO

NSFW:
it's one thing to find a way, but it's another to basically teleport from one place to another. consider he was just watching gotham on the tv.

actually, i took the jgl character to be completely taking over the batman role. what pisses me off is one poster on darkhorizons guessed this outcome, not including that cafe scene. i had suspicions about him being robin, but the ending doesn't read that way for me. hell, with all the raves and secrecy about it, i expected a cgi-faced cameo of the joker in the riot scene somewhere. but no, it's not that crazy.

speaking of the riot/war... it didn't go anywhere. fighting in one scene, then later the crims are all captured inexplicably. this is despite being better armed than the cops. .... yeah i need a re-watch.

Fair enough. Although I think the day Bruce Wayne escaped he had a couple days left before the nuke would go off, giving him enough time to find a way home. Again I need a to watch it again.

On JGL taking over as the Batman. He would be a great replacement for Bruce. Both angry orphans who lost their parents because of crime, both competent fighters and skilled as detectives.

As for the riot. I assumed that after Bane died the morale of the criminals plummeted and they surrendered en masse. Again need to watch it again. The movie was so fast paced in some parts that I missed out on some details. But for the most part I think the movie ended the trilogy very well. Bruce finally moves on and can put away the mask and try and be happy like his parents would have wanted, leaving Robin to continue the fight and to exorcise his own demons by being the new protector of Gotham.

NSFW:
One last thing. I had an inkling that Marion's character would be Raz al Ghuls daughter a long time ago. When I read that someone was cast as the young Raz Al Ghul I knew that his daughter would at some point come into play. What I didn't expect was that Bane would be Talia's right hand in all this.

yeah i still agree. fantastic finale. and very fast paced indeed.

NSFW:
i forgot all about talia, so it took me by complete surprise.

i really look forward to the imax version.

Yeah IMAX would have been so much better. Unfortunately there aren't any in Macau so I have to get back stateside to watch it in IMAX.
