Deland authorities say a teenager shot himself in the head to wake up from a magic-mushroom induced nightmare.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports that 17-year-old Steve Tilbury consumed several mushrooms, then drank a tea made from them, while with friends in his home.

He told investigators that he fell asleep not long after his friends left. But when he awoke from his nap, he reportedly thought he was still stuck in his nightmare.

“Tilbury said he woke up and it felt like it wasn’t real,” the deputy’s report states, adding that he felt trapped in his own home. “[He] said he thought if he shot himself he would wake up from the bad dream.”

Police say the confused teen then buried a .22-caliber bullet into his forehead. He miraculously survived, but still felt as though he was in a living dream.

That's scary. I think people shouldn't be taking psychadelics flippantly, hell, some people shouldn't be taking them at all. And certainly never with a gun in the house.

That's why I always had a trip sitter and benzos on hand to knock me out if necessary. Legalization could result in a safe environment for people to experiment with their consciousness without the same level of risk. The illegality was always a source of paranoia for various substances in my case. They can be great and beneficial drugs but it's not something to be taken lightly.

This 4th of July I had such a bad panic attack on LSD and MDMA that I had to go to the hospital to be sedated...

I also have a .22 rifle, and I sure thought about ending everything just so the horror would stop.... I was much happier that I went somewhere where I could have some peace and quiet instead though lol

Absolutely. I don't know how it would work, but in my ideal world legalized psychadelics means they would only be taken after careful education and preparation and while supervised by someone capable of aiding the experience and able to step in with the appropriate treatment if the trip goes bad.

I'm amazed he's still in this world, is a .22 not supposed to do massive ballistics damage when fired at "suicide range"? And no wonder he felt like he was in a waking dream... cleaning your blood off the floor after a self inflicted headshot? What?

Kid is probably going to be the subject of an interesting medical paper one day, on frontal cortex damage...

This is a sad story.
I have experience very bad trips, where I can imagine something like the situation described in the article.
But I knew not to shoot myself in the head.
I had talked to a lot of people, and read a lot of books and articles on the psychedelic experience.
In sum, education.
But many people don't have access to good drug education, or don't understand how important it is.
Chalk it up to another sad drug war story.

i think this case has more to do with insane dosage more

some people still dont learn no matter how much you educate them
education opens doors, it doesn't push you through them

^ I dunno.
It doesn't mention a dosage in the article.
While what you say about some people not learning no matter what is true,
I wish the guy had had a better chance to find safe, reliable information.
I would require a license to use various drugs.
To get your shrooms license, you have to take a test that shows you understand the basics about the dosage, the importance of having a sitter, what to do if you or someone you are with has a bad trip, what kinds of bad trips are most likely to occur, etc.
Compared to the DARE misinformation that is passed as "education", I think this kind of background would have given him, and many others like him, a better chance.

yeah, i think it sounds like we should be advocating for high potency education before high potency drugs make themselves available

I've heard of people pinching themselves to see if they are dreaming or not but this takes the piss.

I think he may have misconstrued the phrase "bite the bullet"

Someone will typically survive that, but they'll never be the same afterward. A family member of mine was shot at point blank range in the head with a .22. One half of his body stopped working, from head to toe. Other people I've met in my colorful times on planet earth have been shot in the head with .22's and have brain damage like hell, but show no physical or mental symptoms because they were already Neanderthals to begin with.

But anyways, this story hit home because I had a bad trip one time, 6 years ago, where I was thinking in depth about how to acquire a firearm and point it to my skull. Last time I took shrooms or any psychedelic. Some people need to get their minds right first before taking those kinds of drugs, or just not take them at all, ever.

^ To be fair dude, i'm willing to bet a lot of people who have these kinds of issues aren't fully aware of just how bad they are. Some people struggle with mild deppression for a while without ever realising whats really wrong. Which itself isn't a mega bad thing, but add that to 3 gram of shrooms and it'll go pear shaped..

That's only half the problem though, a lot more people would have a much better time if there was just some proper fucking education instead of "LOL U EAT SHROMZ ND UR BELLY BLEEDZ

^Just until you realize the time has come to overthrow the government and notice that your improvised weapons won't even touch their firearms.

By the time you have a government whacked out enough to overthrow, there's probably going to be a fledgling black market.

Also, the major world governments have nuclear weapons and Joe Blow does not, so the gov'ts are really holding all the cards here.

On the other hand, if you end up banning guns, people are just going to turn to knife crime and black market weapons.

I think a better strategy is to teach people to lock their firearms up if they're going to get shroomed out...

Ive also had a really bad trip on shrooms back in 1998 but never thought of killing myself to over come it. I knew I was stuck in that bad scenario for a while & if I could get some sleep, it would be over after several hours. Never had a bad trip on LSD but those damn shrooms really did me in, wow!Very scary trip for me but I overcame it, thank God!

This kid in the article im assuming couldnt differentiate between the bad dream & reality after waking up..........
