Ben Cousins only getting an $800 fine for having 3.5grams of meth.

i'm not sure on the specific laws but 3.5grams would warrant intent to sell no doubt. and being ben cousins the whole thing just wreaks of the usual media circus stunts.

Yeah I doubt Ben Cousins is so desperate he needs to sell points in rehab.

Dick move if he did though.

Been following this story pretty closely and have not seen anything to inducate he had any intent to sell.

That anyone with his coin would even contemplate that to me is ludicrous.

He is certainly not the first and won't be the last person to enter rehab with drugs to 'assist' their process.

Okay, i was wrong to say he might have been selling it... everyone chill lol.
my main point is that he only got an $800 fine for having 3.5 grams. What kind of ludicrous shit is this? Anyone else would be banged up for that.

Yeah the preferential treatment is absurd, but I'm mostly happy there's someone who didn't have their life further ruined simply for choosing to use drugs that society disapproves of.

what's with this thread? only $800?
i'm no fan of this pseudo-gangsta footy wanker - but since when is $800 for possession some kind of outrage?
he's been hounded by cops and media, harassed at his home and everywhere he goes - and yes he could afford a good lawyer - so the charges were (rightfully) downgraded from possession with intend to simple possession. my (very poorly informed) understanding is that he was close to the limit for trafficking, but by no means drastically above it.

is this a thing, where people get sentenced and there is some automatic reaction people have that it was too lenient? like some dog-whistle of outrage?
you hear a lot of this crap on talkback radio and the like, but come on - he's a drug user, just like a lot of us here.
he's got issues with addiction - just like a lot of us here.
i don't think people should be charged for possessing drugs for their own personal use, and frankly i was disgusted that the wa police minister expressed his disappointment at the sentence, saying words to the effect of "jail might've straightened him out". bullshit. jail doesn't straighten people out, it locks them up with people of all criminal persuasions and forces them to toughen up to survive.

if there was any evidence that he was taking drugs to sell in rehab, then he should've been charged accordingly, but he's just a dickhead with a drug problem who gets too much attention for it. the media loves it, pushes and pushes to the point that he's stupid enough to smuggle an 8 ball of meth into a rehab stint.
who knows what he was thinking?
whatever he was up to, he's been through enough legal crap and bad publicity - i'm not sticking up for the guy, but he needs to be left alone so he can decide for himself that he has to get better.

bluelight is the last place i expected to see some thread bemoaning the (apparent) leniency of a drugs charge.

I have mixed feelings about this, In one hand I'm glad he got a light sentence because I don't think it's worthy of more, but on the other hand plenty of people cop much worse for the same amount because their not a celebrity and that upests me greatly.

Source?

I don't have any experience with WA law but around her for a first time offender who is convicted with personal procession it sound about right. You could argue that he was slightly higher than the set limit for personal use but he is either a heavy user of a very small time dealer (which I doubt).

Like space junk said no one could argue that the man doesn't suffer more than the average druggie out there. Sending the bloke to prison wouldn't have changed his life for the better. I don't know how wealthy the bloke is anymore given he hasn't worked in a couple of years so complaining $800 is too lenient is just sour grapes. He received a conviction which in my opinion is the worst thing that could happen to someone for a victimless crime.

I would be more outraged by the low level dealers ho get sprung with 20 pills then argue their way out of a distribution charge, but i typical tall poppy syndrome you all want to jump on the celebrity bashing bandwagon. Sounds like one or two of you read too much Womens Day and eat your dinner in from of ACA every night.

I can see where your coming from SP and busty, I don't have any experience with getting done with chems, but I honestly thought if I got busted with that much there would be a more severe outcome.

And yeah, im sick of Ben outrage, I used to like him as a footballer back in the day, my opinion didn't change much once he started getting done with drugs.

I didnt realise it was he's first offence too, thought he would have been in trouble for possession before this.

To anyone that's taken my comment wrong, let me explain. I was trying to insinuate that selling drugs at rehab is a fuckhead act.
I didn't read the link because I don't really give a fuck about drugs in the media, I just think that trying to sell drugs at rehab, irrespective of whether he actually did it or not, is a fuckhead act. That's all.

I got nothing against Cousins for the simple fact he's entertained me kicking around a ball.
I also know that 'allegedly' coming from any journalist is just another way of saying 'I pulled out of my ass', but irrespective of it happening or not I think it's a stupid thing to do.
That's all.

I reckon that his stuff probably wouldnt have been searched if he wasnt a celebrity drug user. They would have profiled him for sure. And as if the meth was for anything other than personal use. But now he has a record as well as an even further tarnished reputation.
