Sounds like those old school "hacker" programs you could download. Can't remember the name of any of them but there was a few. You basically had to get someone to install the server thing through a lie of some sort (or just using, I think, a port scanner to search for machines that already had it installed), you could then connect to their IP address & fuck about with shit remotely using a simple interface. Open & close the CD drive, open chat dialog things, display messages on the screen, browse (& therefore upload/download/run/delete) files etc.

I can remember messing about with one when I was about 16 so that was at least 10 years ago.

Seems like everyone dabbled in hacking in their teens. I dabbled in map & game modding for Civ II and Tiberian Sun. Closest I'll ever come to hacking. I'm really not gifted in the art of programming at all.

Sub7
Back Orifice
tRoJan

Plus a few others I can't recall.

Not bad. Mid-afternoon lull is giving way to late afternoon dread of commuting.

Other than that, work. Which is never good. And yourself?

I'm good, just enjoying the sun being out (somewhat) and looking into cheap headphones, going to get a Numark Mixtrack Pro next week most likely so just need a cheap pair for previewing tracks.

Are you on Bluelight in work? Do they moderate your Internet usage at all?

I used to work in an office with an insane bodybuilder who had egregious taste in music. Can't remember any band names but it was some kind of hideous American nationalist redneck metal / country crossover, lots of confederate flags and skulls on the CDs. He'd play it on the only machine plugged into the stereo.... for about twenty seconds at a time, until it got nuked by me using the kind of script kiddy tools which were almost certainly secretly compromising the rest of the network. It used to be a lot of fun, because we'd all play music from time to time and he never worked out why the machine 'hated' his music and would invariably die when his CDs were inserted. Actually it was bloody risky because he was extremely mental in a bad way.

I used to do things with Amigas a long time ago. Hours of fun loading up a hex editor after a soft reboot and picking through code in the memory LOOKING for things, even though it was broadly meaningless to me. I'll never forget doing that with a game called Rick Dangerous and finding a message inside the code which read something like 'If you can read this you must be hacking... good luck to you in the future!' Felt very secret and exciting, and of course this was pre-internet so you had to work out a lot more for yourself and use tools written in German and guess what the buttons said.

I also beige boxed various payphones in and around my school so we had our own (free) line in the common room for a bit. Fun times.

They supposedly do, but I know the IT manager well enough not to believe it. Plus I get all my work done so there's never been a problem. I try to keep it as discreet as possible but I've been caught with BL running before and nobody's said a thing. Part of my job involves spending a lot of time on the internet anyway, so fingers crossed it'll stay that way.

Haha too right, was always into the whole hacking thing but never had the actual capacity for it. Now I understand a bit more but it's defo some thing you go wild about in your teens, especially when you get cunts who are all 'I hacked so-and-so's hotmail' when in reality you'd just guessed their password or sent them some fake hotmail login thing.

Was always into game modding too but it was Command and Conquer for me. Fucking love that series, shame they fair fucking bollocksed it up with the most recent games.

Edit: Minds me of a story my mate told me. He studied Computer Forensics at Uni and they'd develop viruses and release them on the LAN to test them. Apparently one day, according to him, the IT lot ended up having the localised comp forensics lab join the rest of the Uni network and all hell broke loose. Sort of thought he might be shitting me but it's still a fucking funny thought.

Always loved the culture around hacking when I was in school but never got enough of a buzz from it to actually pursue to a decent level. I always used to take shit apart when I was younger though and put it back together what with my old man being an elcetronics teacher. I ended up making a tidy sum selling modded PS1/2's, chipped pay as you go phones that never run out of credit, and chipped analogue cable boxes that unlocked all the channels. :]

Never met a bodybuilder yet who has decent taste in music. shite taste in music seems to be a mandatory qualification before you're allowed to enter a gym*

* bodybuilder meaning meathead, rather than just gym fitness fanatics (altho never met any fitness freaks with decent taste in sounds either, tbh)
