Ok doke then, i'm going to take the plunge and get the ball rolling. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join. There will be no rules or system underpinning the selection of films other than nominations and then a vote. Once 5 nominations have been collected would Effie (or any other mod who wants to jump in) mind doing us a little poll? (Thanking you!) The winner of the poll after 24 hours of voting is the film of the week. Once we've chosen 'the' film of that week, we'll get discussing as and when we've seen it, but let's make sure that we keep any spoilers in NSFW tags. If you're going to nominate a film, for ease of voting could you add the description, the category of the film, and the film poster.

I'll select the first nomination. I have never seen it before but it just caught my eye as something of a decent quality that we might enjoy:
"The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos)" - Drama, Mystery and Suspense, Romance.

Benjamin Esposito has spent his entire working life as a criminal court employee. Recently retired, and with time on his hands, he decides to write a novel. He does not decide to make up a story. There is no need to. He can draw on his own past as a civil servant for a true, moving and tragic story in which he was once very directly involved. In 1974 his court was assigned an investigation into the rape and murder of a beautiful young woman.

Let's get going! :sus:

The Secret in Their Eyes - seen it. Good film. Highly recommended.
As I just posted in the other thread, I'll add it here too. Sobachye Serdste (dogs heart). Great film. Russian adaptation of Bulgakov novel.
Old Prof. Preobrazhensky and his young colleague Dr. Bormental inserted the human's hypophysis into a dog's brain. Couple of weeks later the dog became "human looking". The main question is "Is anybody who is looking like a man, A REAL MAN?

I'm going to go bleak obscure classic and suggest Naked.

Johnny flees Manchester for London, to avoid a beating from the family of a girl he has raped. There he finds an old girlfriend, and spends some time homeless, spending much of his time ranting at strangers, and meeting characters in plights very much like his own.

Cos it's a really good film. Haven't seen Secrets In Their Eyes.

I'm currently using my ps3, can a mod please edit my post to make my nomination PRIMER. Thanks

Primer

Four friends/fledgling entrepreneurs, knowing that there's something bigger and more innovative than the different error-checking devices they've built, wrestle over their new invention.

yeah, batteries have gone at the mo though, I guess it doesn't have to be a mod that edits my post, if someone else can post the synopsis and film poster and IMDB link for PRIMER

I ninja edited.

Is it one to watch on LSD? I'm looking for something intense if I decide to drop at home.

It's one that needs to be watched more than once with concentration, I wouldn't watch it on LSD but it may be interesting on it. It was made with a $7,000 budget if I remember correctly.

Yeah, it's a great bit of escapism but I can't remember if I really, really hated it for some political reason. I haven't deleted it so presumably not.

Actually I think I find the silicon valley nerd-money-love all a bit lame. Is it like Limitless in that respect? I think I think so.

the voting for a film thing and doing it this way is ass backward imo. if someone wants to get their film nommed they'll have to resubmit it every week.

it would of been better to of voted for a poster first, so they could choose what they wanted to submit (that's what i had in mind at the begining anyways) .. then either just gone with what film they'd chosen to 'show' you, or failing that, asking them to nom 3 and choose one of those. [edit]or even better, the poster can choose a number of movies and say these are the ones to watch this week, so it provides a choice for the group too ...

this isn't what I had in mind really .. or the purpose.

I'll wait for the tweaks in rules ;p ..

which i think should be minimal too. vote for members is where I'm at with this one

wasn't around properly last night bcos my dad got re-admitted to hospital. didn't realise we were in such a hurry.

Sorry people kept going on about it starting it and I didn't mean to miss the mark. I thought we'd want to have a film nailed down by the weekend, so we could all err purchase it. I also thought this way would be fairer to everyone, because there will be people who won't get nominated for like 3 months with the amount of people we already have, and then there will be issues like if we chose Mugz and he chose Primer, then there would be no watching of a film that week because we've almost all seen it? I think this democratic way is a way for people to all feel more connected to it and actually watch the film, if you consider that already there are about 10-20 people who want to take part. Limiting the nominations down to 5 seems to have shown that (this week at least) we will end up with at least a few films that most of us haven't seen or wouldn't have seen, that all look pretty interesting and worth a watch.

Don't really mind, so longas we get that fifth persn/film and get the ball rolling.

aye *raises hand*

(it's about presenting people with something you wish to show them .. a show and tell if you will ... you could give them a choice, if youre concerned about it not having 'universal' appeal ... doesn;t have to be dictatorial

my own approach would be to present an option of a few gems that possibly only get an imdb score of 5, but that are pretty ace.

Also, I imagine if we nominated PTCH he will make us all watch a film of a guy sat on a toilet for 2 hours or something just because he'd love to fuck us over like that? =D
