i've not seen amelie either, purchasing now

i'm going to watch goon as well, although it will be difficult now that marmz has mentioned it in the same post as the mighty ducks :(

very twisted movie

a tale of two sisters
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365376/

Ahh, I remember that. Have you seen Audition? Pretty twisted stuff as well.

Just got myself a 40incher for the bedroom linked up to the 2nd PC as a media centre with Media Portal installed. Looking for some visually stunning films to test it out on. Any ideas?

2001

Enter The Void

Star Trek!

Pink Velvet (even better if your TV is mounted on the ceiling)

@ watsons: hah, it's nowt like the ducks. if you want to see loads of pumped up hockey players smacking shit out of each other and chest beating, then possibly give Goon a whirl. if you're into hero worshipping psychos and lament upon how hard Chopper* was compared to Bronson, compared to X infamous psycho, then you may be a bit impressed but disappointed the guy's stupid and has a heart. we know this because he bought some flowers n a teddybear and felt sorry for him on a few occasions

anyway. watch it regardless. just to marvel in thee spectacle of Testosplatter™

* I loved Chopper (movie) and have his book too, does this make me a hypocrite?

Was Chopper the book any good? I love the film too. Deserves a rewatch soon, in fact.

Good call on 2001: A Space Odyssey, not seen that in awhile. I was thinking maybe The Fountain, but I vaguely remember it being a bit tiresome.

Pink Velvet? I only know of the blue variety by Lynch. Link?

Ha, nice. I think I actually recognise the blonde despite her face being somewhat covered. Time to find a new gf I think...

I would probably compare the type/style of violence in Goon to that in Taken. Taken is obviously a bit better choreographed, but they are both just a brainless bit of fun for me. Time to switch off and watch people get punched/kicked/stabbed/shot in the face. I have my needs :D My favourite for this sort of thing is probably the Bourne movies, and the new one isn't far off, so I will probably be on here creaming myself about that shortly.

WHAAAAT? It's nothing like taken. zero, nada, not even comparable. taken is a revenge/vigilante movie, no? they're completely incomparable

in other news, just to make yer smile MSB, Nerdy is watching Goon at his mums right now. I asked him how far in he was, and he's halfway through.

I asked him what he thought so far, and he replied, 'well, it's just like your average Rom Com really, innit?'

fucking LOL. movies aren't his strong point obvsiously ;p ... although he does normally have half decent taste in em, unlike his music taste

well written, funny yarns. i've only read half of it though. it was mainly toilet reading. if you wanna borrow it I'll mail it to you. but it'd need to be sent back at some point. not that books are ever given back after they're loaned out

[edit] if the book could tell tales, they'd be of a similar nature to the picture you posted in Yella's thread =D

You're offering to send me a book that you've read on the toilet? Excuse me for a couple of minutes while I usher in Spring. And yeah, of course you'd never see it again.

Perhaps bizzarely, I can actually kindasorta see the "average rom-com" thing with Goon. Not that rentasideplot stuff with the gal with the big gums so much as the relentlessly homoerotic machomale-bonding via the medium of twatting each other a bit then hugging each other a bit stuff.

marvel in thee spectacle of Testosplatter™

Bwahahahahahaha! =D

I do believe I decorated me room with that as a teenager :D

PS: Chopper is a belter of a film. Can imagine the book would be a giggle too. But not even close to the level of giggles induced by his *ahem* rap album. Has to be heard to be believed =D

I'm not referring to the genre or the plot, i'm referring to how the style of violence pleases me lol. You know, how they focus on the act of punching etc. so you really feel it, and you feel the satisfaction of throwing it. O, and how it is brainless entertainment with little character development. Pure amusement and funniness. I can't believe he had it down as a rom com though haha. I guess the main thing that film suffers from is the fact it is genreless. It doesn't do the sports thing properly, it doesn't do the romance thing very much at all, it doesn't do the loveable retard makes it big thing... I kind of have it down as a comedy because I found the violence funny, and it kept catching me out with unexpected laughs and self mockery. I kept thinking "fuck, he's gonna get brain damage", then i'd realise 2 seconds later that's inconsequential, and that would make me laugh.

I think we should drop talking about this film now though lol. .

oh, I don't .. coupla more days* at least =D

Watsons n Knock have yet to chirp in after viewing ...

It does have a genre, it's a biopic really, or at least a retelling ... opening credits had a 'this was based on a true story' credit. and there were real clips at the end to make you relate to that, totally devisively because it was integral to its purpose & intent. so it's not comparable to fantasy. the film makes it clear it shouldn't be by those two elements alone.

If it's comparable with anything, I'd say both the Chopper and Bronson movies, both of which I loved because they went into character and history of character much deeper, which is necessary for this kinda thing.

Not even remotely comparable to Taken. which is totally fantasy based.

* I swearz I'll let it drop, not trying to be annoying, but violence in films is one of my faves and I really am interested in what knock n watsons have to say

I wouldn't really compare it to Chopper or Bronson at all meself. Aside from the biopic with lotsa punchups angle, I spose. Although both of the latter are famously brutal in their portrayal of violent men in a violent world there's a crucial difference: neither of them glorified the violence, both showed that actions have consequences and both also showed brutality in a far more realistic way. Whereas Goon tried to portray violence as being an enjoyable, conseqeunce-free, valid and indeed aspirational career move for folk with learning difficulties and thick skulls. Tis why of the three Goon is by far the least violent whilst simultaneously being the most nauseatingly violent.

I don't disagree with any of that ... but as they're films about the lives of (real) & famously violent men, it's a much better comparison than to a fantasy based type revenge movie. which is like chalk n cheese to goon

Taken is best compared with films of the Death Wish variety imo

[edit] totally agree about the style and portrayal of violence too

I will be gooning tonight, knocking up a big batch of dough this minute though...
