^ i would put a fence around that shit

rabbits love fresh vegetables

are there rabbits over in the park where you live, CS? we live near a park too and don't have a rabbit problem. there are some easy fixes for deer and the like -- piss around the beds, old hair clippings, bloodmeal...BUT i'm sure the stinky guy who lives near you knows this.

not really any rabbits....but a massive amount of squirels. smelly kevin will handle this. he's my fucking yoda.

Good thread... I have more veggies going than humanly possible to eat fresh, so we can and freeze the surplus. My girlfriend wants chickens... As long as I don`t have to fool with them i`ll eat the eggs and use the manure in the compost.

dudes, my shit is growing pretty awesomely.

so, my buddy had the idea to break up a spent oyster mushroom log and line our beds with it as a retaining wall. he said that even though the log was pretty much done producing, there was an outside shot we might get some oyster mushrooms. more of an expiriment than anything.

well, guess who has two fat clumps of oyster mushrooms growing?

<<<<this fucking guy.

i'll get some pics up soon.

Just got an apartment with a balcony that has awesome sun exposure, 7+ hours per day. I am now going ape shit with my container garden. So far we are growing...

Grape Tomatoes
Cucumbers
Strawberries
Stringbeans
Mint
Basil
Parsley
tarragon
rosemary
As of today i have a Meiwa Kumquat tree too, will get him transplanted into a 5 gallon container this weekend,

Will also be doing a dwarf peach tree next summer. Might also try some grapes if I can find a decent priced pergola.

i'm sure you've read up a bit on the peach trees, but it's really important to thin out the flowers, because if they all come to fruition the branches can break from the weight of the fruit. i did not know this the only year i had one around.

i finally got some plants in the ground a couple days ago. later than i wanted to but at least i got some stuff in - 2 varieties of tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, and a cucumber vine. i have some more varieties of pepper seedlings that i may grow in containers on the deck - ghost pepper, bolivian rainbow, and 2 something elses i can't remember.

So it seems I have my first pest. They are little green bugs that hop around from leaf to leaf when disturbed, i think they are called leafhoppers. Anyone have experience with these? I read that a good way to kill them is to use a tiny bit of soap in a quart of water and spray.

^^ sounds like a good idea, we use neem oil on our plants

Looks like a spider has decided to move into my strawberry plant, i'll see if he decides to start eating the bugs. I was reading that lady bugs make great pest control, might try to find some this weekend. I saw them available online but they all sell large quantities. I don't need 2000 for my balcony garden and don't want to be responsible for a lady bug infestation here :)

got back from our garden, and wow finally everything is coming up! the speckled roman tomatoes are finally sprouting

supposedly they are great for canning and making sauces, so it should be a great winter, and our beefeaters are coming in too. the little grape ones haven't shown up yet though :(

the fava beans are coming in too, and radishes.

CS -- you into doing a veggie swap meet sometime soon? we'd like some mushrooms!

our chicks have finally gotten big enough to start laying eggs, so bring on the omelettes!

Those speckled roma tomatoes look awesome. With buffalo mozzarella and basil they would make a great salad.

Since moving into an apartment my garden has shrunk to but a few pots on my balcony or mostly herbs. And to add insult to injury my miniature roses have started to show signs of powdery mildew. fml :(
