Codeine and Antihistamines (Loratadine/Cetirizine)

Hello everyone

Upon doing some research on whether loratadine decreases the effects of codeine I found this interesting article.

http://www.springerlink.com/content/ym47832682n16195/
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8891761 (both links go to the same article)

If you ceebs going to them, this is the 'conclusion'.
"Neither cetirizine nor loratadine inhibited codeine-induced histamine release or modified the time course of its release in human skin in vivo when given in clinically
used doses which are sufficient to significantly reduce weal and flare responses."

Basically from this I get the gist that cetirizine and loratadine don't stop the itchies! I personally find this quite scary as I get horrible itchies.

What are your personal opinions and experiences?

Cetirizine most certainly obliterates any tramadol, hydrocodone, or Kratom itchies that I get, but natural opiates like codeine release a lot more histamine than semi-synthetic derivatives than hydrocodone. I rarely use codeine and had only had morphine once, though.

Tramadol gives some wicked itchies, pretty intense histamine release, and cetirizine help with that.

When it comes down to it, I would rather have 2nd gen antihistamines vs. 1st gen ones that dirty up the subtleties of the opiate high through their anticholinergenic effects.

For me I'm usually uncomfortably itchy with or without the antihistamine, but it certainly helps somewhat. According to this test, it may be placebo!

I like the itchies.... never needed to use an anti histamine... but I bet for some people those anti histamines seem to be working. It's amazing what your brain can convince your body of.

I always hear of people liking the itchies, it seems more people like it then dislike it. For those who find it too intense though an antihistamine is just necessary.

Scratching the hydrocodone itch was actually the most enjoyable part of being on hydros for a serious injury. Since I was in a lot of pain, I never got high off of 10-20mg hydro TID (as prescribed) despite being opioid naive, but scratching the itch was entertaining. Sometimes it was fucking relentlessly annoying, other times it was enjoyable: I would grab a back scratcher and go to town :D

I got annoyed of the whole itching thing, though, and don't like the fact that histamine release increases cortisol production.

My opinion and experience is that those studies are bollocks. I've had very bad histamine reactions from codeine a couple of times from taking too much too quickly. The only anti histamine i had to hand was Loratidine and i found it very effective in using 2 x 10 mg (twice the recommended dose but it felt like an emergency), in as much as being betroot coloured with nasty itching subsided to nothing within about 30 minutes of taking the Loratadine. Since then ive started taking the Loratidine a short while before the codeine, which prevents the nasty reactions from occuring atall.

Ive since learnt that Promethazine is the best anti-histamine for use with codeine, as it complements & potentiates the euphoric as well as the drowsy effects of codeine. I didnt have any prometh last few times i had codeine, now i have some prometh i dont have any codeine :!

I know what you're talking about with codeine itchies. I've done codeine a couple times and had severe histaminic reactions to it. Like red skin, hives, etc. In the past diphenhydramine seemed to work well and fix that. Hope this helps.
